WHEREAS THE HUNTINGTOWN HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL CAPTURED THE 2026 MARYLAND 2A SOFTBALL STATE CHAMPIONSHIP, MARKING THEIR SECOND CONSECUTIVE MARYLAND 2A SOFTBALL STATE CHAMPIONSHIP, AND WHEREAS THE TEAM COMPETED AGAINST 46 OTHER MARYLAND HIGH SCHOOLS AND CONCLUDED THE SEASON WITH AN OUTSTANDING RECORD OF 2 WINS AND TWO LOSSES THE AND THE TEAM CON ITS FOURTH CONSECUTIVE SOUTH REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP AND WHEREAS THIS ACHIEVEMENT REPRESENTS THE SEVENTH SOFTBALL STATE CHAMPIONSHIP IN HUNTEDTOWN HIGH SCHOOL'S 22-YEAR HISTORY AND WHEREAS THE TEAM IS LED BY HEAD COACH MICHAEL JOHNSON, WITH ASSISTANT COACHES JOHNNY GRIEVER, JEN HOWELL AND DANIEL KJAERCOVER.THE SOFTBALL TEAM MOB STRAIGHTED EXCEPTIONAL SPORTSMANSHIP AND FAIR PLAY WHILE REPRESENTING THEIR SCHOOL.

IT IS AN ACCESSIBILITY ISSUE, A WORKFORCE READINESS ISSUE AND A GOVERNANCE ISSUE. FOR MY SON HERE, JACOB, WHO HAS CEREBRAL PALSY AND USES ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY TO COMMUNICATE, AI TOOLS CAN HELP REDUCE BARRIERS AND GIVE HIM MORE INDEPENDENCE IN WRITING, ORGANIZING IDEAS AND PARTICIPATING ACADEMICALLY. BUT FAMILIES, TEACHERS, STUDENTS, NEED CLEAR RULES. WITHOUT POLICY, RESPONSIBLE USE

THAT GUIDANCE MUST PROMOTE SAFE, RESPONSIBLE, EQUITY EQUITABLE AND ETHICAL AI USE.IT SHOULD ALSO PROMOTE AI LITERACY THROUGH COMPUTER SCIENCE, EDUCATION, KEEP STUDENTS AND TEACHERS AT THE CENTER OF EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY AND ADDRESS PRIVACY AND ACCESSIBILITY STANDARDS. ONCE MSDE RELEASES THAT GUIDANCE, EACH SCHOOL SYSTEM HAS 120 DAYS TO ADOPT AN AI POLICY ALIGNED WITH IT. THE LAW ALSO REQUIRES EACH LOCAL SCHOOL SYSTEM TO DESIGNATE AN AI COORDINATOR AT THE CENTRAL OFFICE LEVEL TO SERVE AS THE LIAISON WITH THE SENATE ON PRODUCTIVE AND ETHICAL AI USE. THE WORKFORCE PIECE HERE REALLY MATTERS. DOES THAT MEAN I'M DONE? RECENT REPORTS -- IT'S NOT ABOUT RUSHING AI INTO EVERY CLASSROOM.
IT'S ABOUT MAKING SURE CALVERT COUNTY HAS RESPONSIBLE POLICY SO STUDENTS CAN LEARN SAFELY, TEACHERS ARE SUPPORTED AND ACCESSIBILITY NEEDS ARE RESPECTED AND GRADUATES ARE PREPARED FOR THE WORKFORCE THEY ARE ACTUALLY ENTERING.

THERE IS A CONCERN AMONG OUR 22 SMALL BUSINESSES, THE BUS CONTRACTORS AND EMPLOYEES, THE BUS DRIVERS, THAT FOR SEVERAL YEARS, IT APPEARS IF CPS BOE HAS PURSUED ACTIONS THAT APPEAR TO DIVIDE DRIVERS AND BUS CONTRACTORS AND TO CREATE A SFAR AT THIS AMONG US. THIS IS JUST OUR PERCEPTION.
THIS APPROACH DOES NOT PROMOTE PARTNERSHIP AND PLACES FINANCIAL PRESSURE. THAT WILL PROVIDE EACH CONTRACTOR WITH A SINGLE ANNUAL PAYMENT INITIALLY BASED ON HOURS AND LATER OFFERED TO IT BASED ON MILES.
CONTRACTORS DECLINED THIS. WE WOULD LIKE TO RENEGOTIATE WITH A CONTRACT BASED ON BEST PRACTICES IN THE STATE OF MARYLAND AND KOMAR BECAUSE THAT IS A LAW WE FOLLOW.

AN EXTERNAL CANDIDATE WITH EXTENSIVE FOOTBALL AND FLAG FOOTBALL COACHING EXPERIENCE INTERVIEWED FOR THE POSITION AND WAS SUBSEQUENTLY OFFERED THE HEAD COACHING ROLE. AFTER ACCEPTING THE POSITION, THE OFFER WAS RESCINDED. FOLLOWING A COMPLAINT FILED BY AN INTERNAL APPLICANT. THE POSITION WAS THEN AWARDED BASED ON CONTRACTUAL HIRING PREFERENCES THAT PRIORITIZE INTERNAL CANDIDATES. ACCORDING TO THE EXPLANATION PROVIDED BY CCPS DIRECTOR OF HUMAN RESOURCES THE DECISION WAS NOT BASED ON COACHING AND LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE OR SPORT-SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE BUT ON COMPLIANCE WITH PROVISIONS CONTAINED IN NEGOTIATED CONTRACTUAL AGREEMENT AND BOARD PROCEDURES GOVERNING COACHING APPOINTMENTS.
THE CONCERN IS NOT SIMPLY ABOUT ONE COACHING POSITION.
THE LARGER QUESTION IS WHETHER THE CURRENT PROCESS OFFICIALLY CONSIDERS THE QUALIFICATIONS NECESSARY TO LEAD A VARSITY ATHLETIC PROGRAM PARTICULARLY IN A RAPIDLY GROWING SPORT SUCH AS GIRLS' FLAG FOOTBALL. THE SPORT IS CREATING NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENT ATHLETES INCLUDING INCREASED COLLEGIATE RECRUITMENT AND SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES.
WHAT IF THE COACHING POSITION WAS FOR MEN'S BASKETBALL? MEN'S SOCCER? FOOTBALL OR BASEBALL? WHEN COACHING POSITIONS ARE FILLED PRIMARILY THROUGH EMPLOYMENT STATUS RATHER THAN A COMPREHENSIVE EVALUATION OF EXPERIENCE, LEADERSHIP ABILITY AND SPORT-SPECIFIC EXPERTISE IT RAISES CONCERNS ABOUT WHETHER STUDENT ATHLETES ARE CONSISTENTLY BEING PROVIDED WITH THE MOST QUALIFIED LEADERSHIP AVAILABLE. ADDITIONALLY QUESTIONS REMAIN HOW COACHING QUALIFICATIONS EVALUATED IN RELATION TO REQUIREMENTS AND WHETHER CURRENT HIRING PRACTICES APPROPRIATELY BALANCE CONTRACTUAL OBLIGATIONS WITH THE GOAL OF SELECTING THE MOST QUALIFIED COACH FOR STUDENT LEAST.

IN MARCH INCREASING BY $2 GALLON AND REACHING APPROXIMATELY $5.60 MANY THE MONTH OF MAY. BECAUSE OF BUSES NEED TO OPERATE REGARDLESS OF FUEL MARKET CONDITIONS, THESE INCREASE COSTS COULD NOT BE AVOIDED. THE REALITY IS THAT THE COST OF SERVICING HIGH QUALITY MEALS CONTINUES TO OUT PACE OUR CURRENT PRICING STRUCTURE.
CCPS ANTICIPATED FURTHER COST INCREASES AS IT ENHANCES MEAL QUALITY AND ALIGNS WITH U.S.D.A. NUTRITIONAL STANDARDS.
SOME OF THE PLANNED IMPROVEMENTS INCLUDE EXPANDING PROTEIN RICH BREAKFAST OPTIONS, REDUCING SUGAR CONTENT, AND INCORPORATE MORE LOCALLY SOURCED PRODUCT AND INCREASING THE SCRATCH-MADE AND SPEED-CRASH MADE MEAL PREMIERS. WHILE THE INITIATIVES ARE EXPECTED TO RAISE THE COSTS, THE PROGRAM IS COMMITTED TO STRENGTHENING QUALITY OF THE MEAL WE SERVE OUR STUDENT BY PROVIDING THEM WITH HEALTHIER, MORE AIR PEELING OPTIONS.
EVEN WITH THE PROPOSED INCREASES, CALVERT CROWN TIP'S MEAL PRICES REMAIN REASONABLE. GRANTS ARE AN IMPORTANT TOOL IN THAT EFFORT.
FOR FISCAL 27, GRANTS WILL CONTINUE TO PLAY A KEY ROLE IN FUNDING OUR INITIATIVES. BECAUSE THESE FUNDS ARE OFTEN RESTRICTED TO SPECIFIC PURPOSES, THEY DEMAND REGULAR ROUSE, CAREFUL MANAGEMENT TO ENSURE COMPLIANCE AND TO MAXIMIZE THEIR IMPACT ON OUR SCHOOL SYSTEM. OUR RESTRICTED FUNDS TOTALS $27.9 MILLION, SUPPORTING FEDERALLY AND STATE FUNDED PROGRAMS INCLUDING THE TITLE PROGRAMS, HEAD START, SPECIAL

ED, AND OTHER GRANTS THAT PROVIDE SUPPORT FOR SPECIALIZED SHE WASES. THE CHILD NUTRITION PROGRAM SERVES 25 LOCATION AND ENSURE COMPLIANCE WITH U.S.D.A. AND STATE NUTRITIONAL STAN ERSTANDARD AND SUPPORTS.STUDENT HEALTH AND READINESS TO LEARN BY PROVIDING ACCESS TO NUTRITIOUS MEAL. THE FOOD SERVICE FUND TOTALS 7.6 MILLION DOLLARS IN 2027. AND CONTINUES TO OPERATE AS A SELF-SUSTAINING PROGRAM. AS YOU CAN SEE IN THE PIE CHART, 37% OF THE REVENUE IS FROM FEDERAL REIMBURSEMENTS, WHILE ALMOST 50% OF THE REVENUE COMES FROM STUDENT PAYMENTS AND A LA CARTE SALES. WHEN WE ARE LOOKING AT EXPENDITURES HERE, FOR THE FOOD SERVICE PROGRAM, WE SEE THAT 95% OF THAT BUDGET IS DRIVEN BY STAFF COSTS AND ALSO BY FOOD AND FOOD SUPPLY COSTS. FINALLY WE HAVE OUR CAPITAL PROJECTS, OUR SCHOOL CONSTRUCTION FUND BUDGET.
THE F.Y.27 BUDGET FOR SCHOOL CONSTRUCTION FUNDS INCLUDE 21.6 MILLION DOLLARS FOR SCHOOL CONSTRUCTION AND CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS. IN OCTOBER OF 2025, THE BOARD OF EDUCATION APPROVED A C.I.P. PLAN FOR NEXT YEAR, F.Y.27.
IN THAT PLAN THAT YOU APPROVED, IT INCLUDED CONTINUED CONSTRUCTION OF NORTHERN MIDDLE SCHOOL, H.H-VAC UPGRADE, PLAY GROUND IMPROVEMENT. ENSURE OUR FACILITIES REMAIN SAFE, MODERN AND CONDUCIVE TO LEARNING.
IN MARCH 20 2E6, CALVERT PUBLIC SCHOOL WAS AFTER I AWARDED THREE GRANTS. APPROVAL WILL BE NEED BY THE BOARD OF EDUCATION FOR THE ADDITIONAL PROJECTS.
