WE'VE ALSO BEEN ASSISTED BY THE TOWN PENN STATE DOCTORAL STUDENT IN ARCHITECTURAL ENGINEERING. TODAY WE WILL SHARE WHY HARRIETT ELIZABETH BROWN IS IMPORTANT TO WHAT SHE MEANS THE CALVERT COUNTY AND EXPLAIN WHILE OUR COUNTY NEEDS A LARGER HARRIETT ELIZABETH BROWN COMMUNITY CENTER AND PARK AND HOW IMPORTANT THIS IS TO SCHOOLS AND EDUCATION. WE ARE GOING TO TELL YOU HOW CALVERT COUNTY'S TALENTED CTA STUDENTS ARE ALREADY HELPING ALONG WITH FUTURE IDEAS FOR PARTNERSHIP THERE.

AND WE WOULD LIKE TO ASK FOR YOUR PARTNERSHIP AS WE MOVE AHEAD ON THIS WONDERFUL PROJECT. JUST TO US, HARRIETT ELIZABETH BROWN, YOU COULD READ ALL THIS OR HAVE A BETTER IDEA.

>> WERE JUST TAKING A MOMENT TO READ ABOUT CIVIL RIGHT LEADER PREACHER BECAME A FIRST-GRADE TEACHER IN CALVERT COUNTY IN 1937 WHEN SHE LEARNED THE SHOCKING TRUTH, HER AND OTHER TEACHERS OF COLOR WERE BEING PAID UNDER $500 ANNUALLY.

FEELING OUTRAGED BY THE INJUSTICE, THEY TEAMED UP WITH THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF COLORED PEOPLE, THE MARYLAND STATE COLORED TEACHERS ASSOCIATION AND THEN YOUNG ATTORNEY THERE GOOD MARSHALL TO SUE CALVERT COUNTY OVER THIS. CALVERT COUNTY LISTENED AND MADE EQUAL PAY FOR ALL OF TEACHERS IN 1939.

IN 1941 THE ENTIRE STATE WITH THE MARYLAND PAGE EQUALIZATION LAW AND THEN THE ENTIRE NATION HARRIETT CONTINUED TO BE A TEACHER AND LATER A PRINCIPAL 30 YEARS FOLLOWING THE CASE WHILE STILL BEING A CIVIL RIGHTS ACTIVIST UNTIL HER DEATH IN 2009. HARRIETT ELIZABETH BROWN IS AN IMPORTANT CIVIL RIGHTS LEADER FROM CALVERT COUNTY, WE SHOULD CONTINUE TO REMEMBER HER WORK AND REMEMBER THE FIGHT.

THE SALARY BUMP WAS A HUGE DEAL, EVERY AFRICAN-AMERICAN TEACHER IN CALVERT COUNTY GOT HIS OR HER SALARY DOUBLED OVERNIGHT ALSO MARYLAND. NOW EQUALLY PAY TEACHERS BECAME THE BACKBONE OF THE BLACK MIDDLE CLASS TODAY AND OUR OWN HARRIETT ELIZABETH BROWN WAS THE POINT OF THE SWORD FOR THIS PROGRESS.

I WAS HONORED TO CHAIR THE LEGISLATIVE ESTABLISHED.

ELIZABETH BROWN TASK FORCE AND WE HAD THREE RECOMMENDATIONS.

A COMMISSION PORTRAIT AND THE COURTHOUSE, DONE.

RENAME THE STRETCH OF ROUTE TWO FROM ALL SAINTS CHURCH TO THE COUNTY LINE THE HARRIETT ELIZABETH BROWN MEMORIAL PARKWAY, DONE. AND THIRD WAS TO CREATE AN AGE FRIENDLY AND PERMANENT HARRIETT ELIZABETH BROWN COMMUNITY CE CENTER, NOT DONE, RIGHT NOW IT'S A INTERIM CENTER.

LET'S TALK ABOUT WHAT THE FULL CENTER WOULD BE LIKE SHOULD AND WHY IT'S SO IMPORTANT TO KIDS AND FAMILIES IN CALVERT COUNTY.

WHEN FULLY BUILT OUT IT'LL HAVE A MEMORIAL FOR MS. BROWN, GREEN SPACE, PICKLEBALL, TRAILS, PICNIC AREAS AND WHEN THE BUILDING IS COMPLETE, MEETING ROOMS, LOCKER ROOMS, TRACKS, ART AND EXERCISE STUDIOS AND MUCH MORE.

THINK OF WHAT A WONDERFUL RESOURCE THIS IS TO HOP DOWN FARRIS BEACH ROAD, PARKS AND BACK PLANS TO INVEST A MILLION DOLLARS THIS FISCAL YEAR ON DESIGN AND DISTRICT OUTDOOR WORK. THERE SHOULD BE ANOTHER 5 MILLION IN FISCAL 2025 NEXT YEAR TO COMPLETE THIS IN THE BIG MONEY FOR THE BUILDING IS NOT PLUGGED IN UNTIL FISCAL 2029.

PLEASE JOIN US TO URGE THE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS INTERSTATE REPRESENTATIVES TO MOVE QUICKLY AHEAD WITH FUNDING SO I CAN BUILD QUICKLY, EACH YEAR IT BECOMES MORE NEEDED AND MORE EXPENSIVE. IT'S IMPORTANT THE COMMUNITY CENTER PRINCE FREDERICK, IT'S ONE OF THE POO POOREST PARTS OFE COUNTY AND HAS LESS THAN MEDIAN HOUSEHOLD INCOME OF THE WHOLE COUNTY. DOUBLE THE PERCENTAGE OF PEOPLE IN POVERTY AND MORE THAN TWICE THE EMPLOYMENT RATE.

WE WOULD LIKE TO WORK WITH YOU TO MAKE THIS A REALITY.

INCLUSION OF ATHLETICS OF THE PREVIOUSLY MENTIONED MY SON WAS ABLE TO GROW AS AN ATHLETE AND A TEAMMATE COACH DAWSON IN HIS SUPPORT STAFF TOOK THE EXTRA TIME AND CARE NEEDED TO INTEGRATE MY SON AND PRACTICE TO GIVE THEM THE OPPORTUNITY TO COMPETE. WITHOUT THIS TEAM OF DEDICATED COOL GOAL ORIENTED TO SUPPORT MY SON AND STAFF WILL COME BEFORE THEM I CAN'T IMAGINE HOW THE TRANSITION TO HIGH SCHOOL WOULD'VE GONE. SEE C.P.S. THE PAST FEW YEARS I HAVE TAKEN CLASSES THAT INSPIRE ME TO KEEP PRACTICING AND LEARNING MUSIC WHICH IS DEVELOPED INTO A COVID MECHANISM IN A WAY FOR ME TO EXPRESS MYSELF.

RECENTLY I'VE ALSO HAD THE PLEASURE OF PARTICIPATING IN THE COUNTY NO SCHOOL ORCHESTRA WHICH WAS A WONDERFUL AND EXPIRING EXPERIENCE FOR ME AND MANY OF MY PEERS.

WINDY HILL MILLS DRAMA PROGRAM IS EXTREMELY POPULAR AMONG STUDENTS DRAWING 97 PARTICIPANTS FOR LAST YEAR'S PERFORMANCE OF ANY JUNIOR. AS A MEMBER OF THE CAST I FOUND PREPARATION AND PRODUCTION OF THE SHOW TO BE HIGHLY ENGAGING IN A FANTASTIC WAY TO BUILD COMMUNITY. MY ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE HAS BEEN JUST AS PROFITABLE IN EDUCATIONAL. THROUGH MY PARTICIPATION IN WENDING HILLS PROGRESS PROGRAM I MADE MANY FRIENDS. THE SPECTACULAR TEACHERS AT WINDY HILL MIDDLE SCHOOL HAVE SUPPORTED ME IN ALL MY ENDEAVORS INCLUDING NATIONAL HISTORY FAIR AND NATIONAL JUNIOR HONOR SOCIETY. SEE C.P.S. CAROL COUNTY BEGINS THEIR SCHOOL YEAR ON SEPTEMBER 3 WITH HER LAST DAY FOR STUDENTS TO BE JUNE 13, CHARLES, HOWARD AND MARCIA 10 COUNTIES BEGIN ON AUGUST 26 WITR LAST STUDENT DAY BETWEEN JUNE 11 AND JUNE 16. IN FREDERICK COUNTY BEGINS ON AUGUST 21 AND ENDS ON JUNE 6.

NO COUNTIES HAVE POSTED A CALENDAR FOR SCHOOL YOUR 25 - 26 AT THIS TIME.

WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO DO IS HIGHLIGHT THE PROPOSED CALENDARS AND MRS. MAXEY IF YOU WOULD PULL UP ANY OF THEM IF YOU WOULD GO TO THE FIRST PAGE IF YOU SEE THIS CALENDAR ON THE SCREEN FOR THE 24 - 25 SCHOOL CALENDAR IT IS LABELED AS CALENDAR A AND WE TRY TO COLORCODE THESE TO MAKE THEM EASIER TO DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN AN CALENDAR A IS IN BLUE I'M GOING TO REFERENCE THIS BUT THE FIRST THING I'M GOING TO SHARE WITH YOU ARE SIMILAR IN ALL FOUR CALENDARS. WHETHER OPTION A OR OPTION B WINTER RECESS DAYS STAYS THE SAME IN BOTH THAT IS SIMILAR FOR SPRING RECESS. FOR THE 24 - 25 CALENDARS YOU WILL SEE SPRING RECESS APRIL 14 THROUGH THE 21ST ENDED THE 25 - 26 CALENDAR YOU WILL SEE BETWEEN MARCH 30 AND APRIL 6.

THE COMMITTEE SPOKE WITH CHARLES IN ST. MARY'S COUNTY REGARDING HOW THEY DETERMINE SPRING RECESS BECAUSE WE KNOW THAT IS SOMETHING THAT CAME UP LAST YEAR. CHARLES COUNTY SHARED THAT THEY LOOK AT SURROUNDING DISTRICTS TO DETERMINE WHEN THEY ARE GOING TO PLACE THEM.

HOWEVER, THERE 24 - 25 CALENDAR IS ALREADY OUT AND THEY HAD VERY FEW CALENDARS OUT AT THAT TIME. ST. MARY'S COUNTY HAS NWILL START TO BEGIN THE PROCESS FOR NEXT YEAR'S CALENDAR IN THE FOLLOWING YEARS CALENDAR THIS MONTH. HOWEVER, THEY DID SHARE WITH ME THAT THEY PRIMARILY SET SPRING RECESS THE WEEK BEFORE EASTER.

YOU WILL NOTICE IN BOTH CALENDAR SPRING RECESS IS THE WEEK BEFORE EASTER SO WE WOULD HOPE TO BE IN LINE WITH ST. MARY'S COUNTY AND CHARLES COUNTY FOR THE 24 - 25 IS THE WEEK BEFORE. ALL FOUR PROPOSALS HAVE A DAY OFF FOR STUDENTS AT 10 AND 11 MONTHS STAFF. ALL FOUR PROPOSALS HAVE

ALL FOUR PROPOSALS HAVE THREE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT DAYS ONE SOMETIME IN OCTOBER THAT ALIGNS WITH THE MS EA CONFERENCE.

ONE IN NOVEMBER ALIGNED WITH VETERANS DAY AND TYPICALLY USED AT THE ELEMENTARY LEVEL FOR PARENT CONFERENCES. AND ONE IN JANUARY WHICH HALF OF THE DAY IS TYPICALLY FOR ELEMENTARY PARENT CONFERENCES AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT. ALL FOUR PROPOSALS HAVE TWO DAYS DESIGNATED FOR INCLEMENT WEATHER.

THESE ARE DAYS WHEN SCHOOLS WILL BE CLOSED FOR STUDENTS AND 10 AND 11 MONTHS STAFF UNLESS THE SYSTEM WOULD CLOSE A INCLEMENT WEATHER.

IN THE 24 - 25 CALENDARS THEY ARE BOTH IN MARCH AND IN THE 25 - 26 CALENDAR ONE IS IN MARCH AND THE OTHER IS IN MAY. IF ADDITIONAL INCLEMENT WEATHER DAYS ARE NEEDED THE RECOMMNDATION BY THE CALENDAR COMMITTEE WOULD BE TO AMEND THE DAYS AFTER THE LAST STUDENT DAY AND THIS WOULD BE NOTED IN THE CALENDAR THAT IS SELECTED AT THIS TIME IT IS NOT NOTED THERE.

ALL FOUR PROPOSALS HAVE 12 DAYS DESIGNATED AS EARLY DISMISSAL OR LATE ARRIVAL DAYS.

SIX OF THE 12 DAYS ARE DESIGNATED IN THE NEGOTIATED AGREEMENT WHICH I SHARE JUST A FEW MINUTES AGO. TWO OF THOSE DAYS ARE DESIGNATED FOR GRADUATION.

ONE OF THOSE DAYS IS FOR PARENT CONFERENCES AND THAT DAY IS SIMILAR TO THE SHARES CALENDAR WHICH OCCURS IN OCTOBER AND ALIGNS WITH COLUMBUS AND INDIGENOUS PEOPLES DAY AND WE RECEIVED POSITIVE COMMENTS ABOUT UTILIZING THAT DAY FOR PARENT CONFERENCES THIS YEAR AND HAVING CONFERENCES WITH THE STUDENTS THAT NEEDED VERSUS WAITING UNTIL NOVEMBER, WE HAD THE ABILITY TO DO PARENT CONFERENCES IN OCTOBER.

THREE OF THE 12 DAYS OF OPERA UNDER PROFESSIONAL LEARNING AND COLLABORATIVE PLANNING WHAT OCCURS IN SEPTEMBER 1 AND R AND ONE IN MARCH.

THESE DAYS PROVIDED ADDITIONAL AVENUE TO PROVIDE TEACHERS WITH PROFESSIONAL LEARNING AND COLLABORATIVE PLANNING WE DO FIND THAT IT'S DIFFICULT TO FIND SUBS SO PULLING DURING THE DAY AND PUTTING US UP INTO THE CLASSROOM DOES NOT ALWAYS WORK SO WE HAVE THIS TIME DESIGNATED IN THE CALENDAR AND IMP PROVIDES AN OPPORTUNITY TO ENSURE TEACHERS HAVE INFORMATION THAT THEY NEED AND TO PROVIDE TIME FOR COLLABORATIVE PLANNING.

WE CONTINUE TO HAVE BOTH EARLY DISMISSAL IN LATE ARRIVAL DAYS AT THIS TIME DUE TO THE 3-YEAR-OLD REGIONAL PRE-K GARDEN PROGRAMS RUNNING HALF DAYS. IF THOSE PROGRAMS WERE TO MOVE TO FULL DAYS THAT IS SOMETHING WE COULD COME BACK TO HAVING A CONVERSATION ABOUT ADJUSTING WHETHER THE DELAYED ARRIVAL BECOME THE EARLY DISMISSAL OR VICE VERSA WHATEVER THE BOARD WOULD FEEL IS NECESSARY TO MAKE THE CHANGE. WHAT WE TRY TO DO IS OFFSET THE IMPACT TO THOSE STUDENTS SO IF WE ONLY HAD EARLY DISMISSALS, THOSE STUDENTS WHO ARE IN THE 3-YEAR-OLD REGIONAL PROGRAM IN THE AFTERNOON WOULD MISS THOSE OPPORTUNITIES. THAT IS WHY THEY ARE STILL THERE BUT AS WE MOVE TO FULL DAY THAT CAN BE RECONSIDERED. THE NUMBER OF EARLY DISMISSAL AND DELAYED ARRIVAL DAYS IN THE COUNTY RANGE BETWEEN FOUR AND 14, LAST YEAR CHARLES COUNTY HAD 13 IN ST. MARY'S HAD 10.

ANOTHER THING THAT YOU WILL SEE IN ALL FOUR PROPOSALS HAVE A SYNCHRONOUS DAY ONE IN THE FALL AND ONE IN THE WINTER.

IN SCHOOL YEAR 24 - 251 OF THE TWO ASYNCHRONOUS DAYS FOLLOW THE GENERAL ELECTION DAY WHICH IS NOVEMBER 5. THAT IS SIMILAR TO WHAT WERE DOING WITH THE PRIMARY ELECTION THIS YEAR SO WE THOUGHT THAT WOULD BE A GOOD PRACTICE TO PUT IN FOR NEXT YEAR. THE OTHER DAY IN THE 24 - 25 CALENDAR FALLS OFF EVERY 12.

THE CALENDAR INDICATES RIGHT NOW IN ASYNCHRONOUS EARLY DISMISSAL DAY.

THE CALENDAR COMMITTEE WANTED TO ENSURE THAT THE BOARD WAS NOT INTERESTED IN UTILIZING ASYNCHRONOUS BEYOND THE GENERAL ELECTION DAY THAT THE DAY WOULD BECOME A EARLY DISMISSAL OR LATE ARRIVAL. IN THE 25 - 26 CALENDAR THE FATHER IS ON 13TH WHICH IS ALIGNED WITH THE COLUMBUS INDIGENOUS PEOPLE SAY IN THE WINTER DATE IS FEBRUARY 11. AGAIN IF THE BOARD WOULD NOT LIKE TO MOVE FORWARD WITH ASYNCHRONOUS LEARNING OUTSIDE OF THE PRIMARY OR GENERAL ELECTION THE CALENDAR COMMITTEE WOULD REQUEST

THE MARKING PERIOD AND% TEACHER WORK TIME YOU WILL NOTICE THROUGHOUT THE CALENDAR ARE DIFFERENT IN THEIR BASED ON THE START DATE FOR STUDENTS AND MAPPING OUT 45 DAYS TO INDICATE WHEN THE MARKING PERIODS WITHIN.
