WE DID HAVE THE MOST GOLD MEDAL WINS OF ANY SCHOOL IN THE STATE. CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR SKILLS USA MEMBERS. NEXT WE[2.05 Curriculum Audit Presentation]
WILL MOVE INTO OUR CURRICULUM AUDIT VISITATION.>> GOOD AFTERNOON. MEMBERS OF THE BOARD OF EDUCATION. I AM SUSAN JOHNSON, CHIEF ACADEMIC OFFICER AND I AM HERE WITH KRISTI TIDWELL, THE LEAD AUDITO . IN 20 1819 , CALVERT COUNTY SCHOOLS WORKED WITH MANY TEACHERS ABOUT THE CONCERN REGARDING THEIR CURRICULUM. AND INCONSISTENCIES WITHIN THE CURRICULUM AND THE INABILITY T PLAN EFFECTIVELY. THE ADMINISTRATION AT THE TIME HELD MANY OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENT TO PROVIDE FEEDBACK ON THAT , AND AS A RESULT OF ALL THE FEEDBACK THAT THEY RECEIVED, THEY ENGAGED IN AN AUDIT . THE AUDIT WAS IN PROGRESS AT THE TIME WE HIT THE PANDEMIC AND IN MARCH OF 2020, AS WE WERE SHUTTING DOWN OUR CURRICULUM AUDIT WAS NOT COMPLETED BECAUS THEY WERE SCHEDULED TO BE HERE THE WEEK WE SHUT DOWN. SINCE THEN WE HAVE RECONNECTED WITH THEM AND AS RESULT, THEY REDID OUR AUDIT. SO IN THE FALL, WE PROVIDED MANY SUPPORTS AND ARTIFACTS FOR THE CURRICULUM AUDIT TEAM AND THEY WERE ON SITE TO DO A VISIT IN DECEMBER OF 2022. WE ARE HERE TODAY TO SHARE THE FINDINGS. MRS. TIDWELL WILL BE SHARING OUR RESULTS .
>> THANK YOU. GOOD AFTERNOON , BOARD MEMBERS. VERY NICE TO BE BACK IN THE DISTRICT. I'M THRILLED TO BE ABLE TO COME BACK AND SEE YOU ALL AGAIN. AND PROVIDE THESE FINDINGS. I JUST WANT TO SAY A COUPLE THINGS, THIS IS MY 27TH YEAR IN PUBLIC EDUCATION. IF YOU CAN'T TELL, LIVE IN TEXAS. I WILL JUST CLEA THAT UP. THAT IS MY 27TH YEAR IN PUBLIC EDUCATION , I HAVE LOVED EVERY MOMENT OF IT AND I'M CURRENTLY THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF INSTRUCTION IN OUR DISTRICT. I HAVE BEEN AUDITING FOR APPROXIMATELY 15 YEARS , SERVING AS A LEAD AUDITOR FOR THE PAST TWO YEARS. SO APPRECIATE YOU HAVING US BACK.
I JUST WANT TO THANK THE TEAM , I DON'T KNOW IF YOU REALIZE TH LEADERSHIP TEAM, HOW MUCH WORK IT TAKES TO COLLECT THE DOCUMENTS THAT GO INTO THIS. OUR WORK BEGAN IN LATE SEPTEMBER, EARLY OCTOBER THAT WE BEGAN REVIEWING DOCUMENTS AND CURRICULUM DOCUMENTS. AND LOOKING AT SURVEYS AND ARTIFACTS. A LOT OF WORK GOES INTO THIS EVEN BEFORE WE GET THERE, NOT TO MENTION THE 90 DAYS FOLLOWING. SO LET'S GET
[00:25:07]
STARTED, WHAT IS THE PURPOSE O THE AUDIT? YOU GET SO INVOLVED IN WHAT YOU'RE DOING IN YOUR OWN DISTRICT. IT'S HARD TO SE WHAT'S HAPPENING. THIS JUST ALLOWS US TO GIVE THE INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL STAFF A REALLY OBJECTIVE VIEW OF WHAT IS HAPPENING . THIS ISN'T ABOUT ANY ONE PERSON OR DEPARTMENT, IT'S AN OVERVIEW OF SYSTEMS ACROSS THE DISTRICT AND THAT IS REALLY WHAT WE LOOK AT. ARE THE SYSTEMS WORKING IN CONCERT TOGETHER TO REALLY MAKE ALL OF THESE THINGS HAPPEN? ONCE WE D THOSE AND GET TO THE DISTRICT AND WE DEVELOP WHAT IS KNOWN AS FINDINGS. WE FOLLOW THAT WITH VERY SPECIFIC RECOMMENDATIONS THAT OUTLINE STEPS AND ACTION STEPS THE DISTRICT CAN TAKE TO MORE OR LESS REMEDY FINDINGS. WE ALWAY ASK THE DISTRICT WHY DO YOU WANT TO DO A CURRICULUM AUDIT, WHAT IS THE PURPOSE? AND THE DISTRICT STATED THEY WANTED TO PROVIDE A CULTURALLY RESPONSIBLE CURRICULUM THAT IS ALIGNED TO STATE AND NATIONAL STANDARDS AND THAT TEACHERS AR ABLE TO USE TO PLAN AND DELIVE INSTRUCTION THAT REALLY MEETS THE NEEDS OF ALL STUDENTS AND REALLY HELPS CLOSE ANY KIND OF ACHIEVEMENT GAP. I WANT TO HIT THE FOCUS AREAS, THERE ARE FIV OF THEM. FOCUS AREA ONE IS VISION AND ACCOUNTABILITY. THA DEALS MOSTLY WITH POLICY. JOB DESCRIPTIONS . WHAT WE REALLY LOOK AT IS , DOES THE DISTRICT HAVE THOSE EXPECTATIONS IN PLAC THROUGH POLICY, PLANNING AND JOB DESCRIPTIONS THAT HOLD PEOPLE ACCOUNTABLE FOR WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE ? WE ANALYZE THOSE PARTICULAR CRITERIA AND DEVELOP FINDINGS AS NEEDED. TH CURRICULUM, THAT IS THE HEART O THE AUDIT. IS THERE A CURRICULUM FOR THE TEACHERS AN WHAT IS THE QUALITY OF THAT? CONSISTENCY AND EQUITY. NOT ONL IS THERE A CURRICULUM, IS IT BEING USED IN A WAY THAT ENSURES EVERY SINGLE STUDENT HA EQUAL ACCESS TO THE CURRICULUM? THAT'S WHY YOU HAVE THE CURRICULUM. SO NO MATTER WHO YO ARE, WHAT SCHOOL YOU ARE IN, EVERYONE GETS THAT EQUAL OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN IN A HIGH QUALITY ENVIRONMENT. THERE IS LOT OF THINGS THAT GO INTO THAT DO WE KNOW IF OUR STUDENTS ARE LEARNING OR NOT? DO WE KNOW IF OUR STUDENTS ARE LEARNING WHAT WE HAVE TAUGHT THEM IN THE CLASSROOM? AND DO WE KNOW IF W ARE MEETING THEIR NEEDS IF THEY ARE VERY GOOD STUDENTS ARE STRUGGLING, HOW DO WE MAKE SURE WE MAXIMIZE THAT? GETTING THE MOST OUT OF OUR DOLLARS , AND ALSO WE LOOK AT FACILITIES . SOMETIMES IT HAS TO DO WITH TECHNOLOGY AND PRODUCTIVITY. BUT MOSTLY, IT LOOKS AT ARE YOU INVESTING WISELY AND GETTING RETURNS ON YOUR INVESTMENTS? THE FOUNDATION OF THE MODEL , THE WRITTEN CURRICULUM IS THE WORK THAT DR. JOHNSON AND HER INSTRUCTIONAL SPECIALIST NEEDED TO DEVELOP A CURRICULUM IN COLLABORATION WITH TEACHER INPUT. THAT IS A CONTINUOUS PROCESS THAT IS NEVER DONE. THE WORK PLAN ITSELF CONTINUALLY EVOLVES AND STRENGTHENS DOCUMENTS OVER TIME. THE ACTUAL WORK DELIVERED IN THE CLASSROOM, HOW WELL IS IT DELIVERED? AND CLOSING THAT IS THE ASSESSMENT PIECE. DO THEY REALLY LEARN WHAT WE INTENDED? THAT IS THE FOUNDATION OF THE MODEL . JUST TO GIVE YOU AN IDEA OF WHAT WE LOOK AT, WE LOOK AT DOCUMENTS, WELL OVER ,[00:30:05]
WE LOOKED AT CAMPUS IMPROVEMEN PLANS FROM ALL CAMPUSES . SO WE REALLY LOOKED AT UPWARDS OF 2 TO 300 DOCUMENTS THAT THE DISTRICT PROVIDES, NOT ONLY WHA WE LOOKED AT AS WELL. STUDENT ARTIFACTS WERE COLLECTED ACROSS ALL THE ELEMENTARY CAMPUSES AND WE ANALYZED 797 ARTIFACTS. AND ONE PERSON DOES THAT, THEY REALLY SPECIALIZE IN IT. AND YOU HAVE PARTICULAR AUDITORS ON THE TEAM THAT SPECIALIZE IN THOSE AREAS. AND THIS PERSON WAS AN OFF-SITE AUDITOR. AND SHE HAD SEVERAL MONTHS TO REALL ANALYZE THOSE AND LOOK AT THOSE WE DID INTERVIEWS, WE INTERVIEWED OVER 140 PEOPLE. EVEN PRIOR TO WHEN WE GOT HERE.WE WERE ABLE TO MEET A LOT OF PEOPLE AND TALK WITH THEM BEFOR THE AUDIT. WE RECEIVED OVER 100 RESPONSES ON SERVICE. PARENTS, TEACHERS, ADMINISTRATORS. THER WAS A LOT OF INPUT AND WE WERE REALLY GLAD TO SEE THAT BECAUSE WE DON'T SEE THAT IN A LOT OF DISTRICTS. WE DON'T HAVE A LOT OF SURVEY RESPONSES SOMETIMES.
WE VISITED SIX ELEMENTARIES THAT WERE GOOD REPRESENTATION O YOUR DISTRICT. AND WE VISITED 111 CLASSROOMS WHILE WE WERE HERE. ESSENTIALLY, IN THE PROCESS WE LOOK FOR FOR BASIC THINGS . DO YOU HAVE IT , DOES IT EXIST? ARE THERE DOCUMENTS OR DO YOU HAVE CURRICULUM? AND THEN, WE LOOK AT IS IT ANY GOOD? WHAT IS THE QUALITY OF WHAT YOU HAVE? THEN WE LOOK AT IS IT BEING USED BY ANYONE? AN FINALLY, DOES IT MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT. THOSE ARE THE FOU BASTIONS THAT REALLY DRIVE A LOT OF THE WORK THAT WE DO. WE ENDED UP WITH 13 FINDINGS ACROS THE AREAS. AND FIVE RECOMMENDATIONS. THOSE ARE BUNDLED UP IN FOCUS AREAS. YOU WOULDN'T HAVE 13 DIFFERENT ONES THEY ALL REALLY WORK IN CONCERT THE STRENGTHS, WE REALLY ALWAY LOOK FOR . HOW DO WE RANK IN DISTRICT YOU'VE BEEN IN? IT WAS REALLY A PLEASANT VISIT. VERY STRONG DISTRICT. YOU'VE GOT VERY DEDICATED , CARING PEOPLE.
YOU HAVE A COMMITMENT TO THIS PROCESS OF DEVELOPING THE CURRICULUM AND PROVIDING THOSE RESOURCES FOR TEACHERS. ONE OF THE THINGS I WAS MOST IMPRESSED WITH OF ANY DISTRICT OR EVER BEEN IN, YOU HAVE A VERY WELL-DEVELOPED POLICY IN TERMS OF EQUITY. IT WAS VERY IN DEPTH THAT I HAVE NOT SEEN IN MANY OTHER DISTRICTS. I COMMEND YOU ON YOUR WORK FOR THAT AND I KNOW YOUR ONGOING WORK. THE OTHER THING I SAW IN THE SIX CAMPUSES IS THAT THERE IS DEFINITELY A COMMITMENT TO WELL-MAINTAINED FACILITIES. IT WAS A PLEASANT VISIT TO EACH OF THE CAMPUSES. AND IT'S A GREAT PLACE. WHEN YOU KNOW THAT YOUR STUDENTS HAVE A PLACE THEY ARE COMFORTABLE, AND THEY CAN THRIVE IN A SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT I'VE BEEN IN MANY THAT ARE NO LIKE THAT. KUDOS TO YOU FOR HAVING THAT PHILOSOPHY.
COMMUNITY , JUST BASICALLY FROM TALKING TO TEACHERS IN THE DISTRICT AND ANYONE PARENTS, YOU HAVE A VERY CARING COMMUNIT THAT WANTS THE DISTRICT TO BE SUCCESSFUL. AND YOU HAVE A VER STABLE FINANCIAL SYSTEM. THOSE ARE JUST SOME OF THE STRENGTHS WE HIGHLIGHTED. THERE WERE MANY MANY MORE . LET'S GET INTO THE MEAT OF THE FINDINGS. WHAT DID WE FIND AS WE WERE REVIEWING ALL OF THESE DOCUMENTS AND TALKING TO PEOPLE AND INTERVIEWING PEOPLE AND VISITIN CAMPUSES. IN THE FOCUS AREA ONE, THIS IS THE VISION AND ACCOUNTABILITY. NEEDS TO BE MORE SPECIFICITY IN TERMS OF WH IS DEVELOPING , IMPLEMENTING AN REVISING CURRICULUM. THAT NEED TO START WITH THE INSTRUCTIONAL
[00:35:03]
LEADERSHIP TEAM IN TERMS OF DEVELOPING THOSE PLANS. THE POLICY NEEDS TO SUPPORT THAT TH ELEMENT. AND IT NEEDS TO SUPPOR THE USE . IF WE'VE GOT THIS DEVELOPED, IT NEEDS TO BE USED BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT CREATES THAT EQUITABLE AND EQUAL ACCESS. JOB DESCRIPTIONS ARE THERE, EVERYONE HAS THEM. THEY DO HAVE CLEARLY DEFINED ROLES WITHIN THEM. BUT THERE NEEDS T BE MORE SPECIFIC REERENCES TO THE CURRICULUM FUNCTIONS. FOR EXAMPLE, THERE NEEDS TO BE A SPECIFIC REFERENCE TO TWO IS I CHARGE OF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT. IT IS THEIR SOLE RESPONSIBILITY TO CARRY THAT OU AND PLAN THAT AND MAKE SURE EVERYONE IS ACCOUNTABLE FOR MAKING SURE THAT IS REALIZED.THAT'S THE BIGGEST PART OF A JOB DESCRIPTION, IS THAT THIS I HOW OUR EMPLOYEES MEET EXPECTATIONS. WE JUST HAVE TO MAKE SURE THEY ARE VERY CLEAR. AND ALSO THINK ABOUT THAT IN RELATION TO THE PROXIMITY OF TH JOB FOR TEACHING AND LEARNING.
MAINTENANCE JOB DESCRIPTION MIGHT NOT HAVE SOMETHING SPECIFICALLY ABOUT INSTRUCTION, BUT IT WOULD HAVE THINGS LIKE MAINTAINING AN ENVIRONMENT THAT IS CONDUCIVE TO LEARNING. SO YO JUST HAVE TO BE SURE TO THINK ABOUT THE LEVEL OF PROXIMITY.
WE ALSO FOUND THAT PLANNING IS VALUED , IT'S OCCURRING, I DO KNOW THERE ARE PLANS TO BEGIN THAT PROCESS. IT IS AN IDEAL TIME TO BEGIN A NEW STRATEGIC PLANNING PROCESS THAT CAN HELP YOU TAKE THESE FINDINGS AND INCORPORATE THEM AND SEE THIS VISION THROUGH THE NEXT 3 TO 5 YEARS. LET'S MOVE TO FOCUS ARE TWO. PLANNING IS EVIDENT, WE FOUND A LOT THAT IT'S HAPPENING AND THERE'S A LOT OF QUALITY PEOPLE DOING THAT. BUT IF SOMEONE LEAVES AND THERE ARE NO WRITTEN, CONSISTENT GUIDELINES TO CARRY YOU FROM YEAR TO YEAR, THEN THE SYSTEM IS DOWN. THAT' WHY IT'S IMPORTANT TO HAVE THOSE. WE DID FIND THAT ALTHOUG YOU HAVE IT, THERE WAS NOT A WRITTEN CURRICULUM MANAGEMENT PLAN TO HELP KEEP THAT GOING. WE ALSO LOOK AT THE SCOPE OF CURRICULUM, WHICH SIMPLY MEANS FOR EVERY COURSE AND EVERY GRADE, IS THERE A CURRICULUM DOCUMENT? WE DID FIND THERE WA A CURRICULUM DOCUMENT FOR EVER CORE ACADEMIC COURSE. SO THAT'S VERY GOOD. WE ALSO FOUN WE FOUND THIS THROUGH INTERVIEWS, SURVEY RESPONSES, OBSERVATIONS , THAT THE USE OF THOSE IS A LITTLE BIT INCONSISTENT. AND THAT IS SOMETHING THAT WE REALLY HAVE THAT CONCERN THAT IT WILL IMPAC EQUAL ACCESS IF THEY ARE NOT UTILIZED CONSISTENTLY ACROSS THE DISTRICT. THE CURRICULUM I GOOD, IT HAS A GOOD START BUT IT DOES NEED ADDITIONAL COMPONENTS. OUR DOCUMENTS ARE CONTINUOUS WORK IN PROGRESS THA DO NOT START OUT PERFECT. IT IS AN EVOLVING DOCUMENT THAT IS LIVING AND YOU CONTINUALLY STRENGTHEN IT AS YOU LOOK AT STUDENT DATA AND DETERMINE AREAS OF NEED. AND YOU STRENGTHEN THE DOCUMENTS AS YOU GO. YOU'VE GOT A GREAT START , THERE IS GOOD WORK BEGINNING AND THAT NEEDS TO BE A COLLABORATIVE PROCESS FROM THE TEACHERS ON CAMPUS PRINCIPLES AND EVERYONE NEEDS TO HAVE COLLABORATIVE INPUT. IN AREA THREE, WE LOOKED AT CONSISTENCY AND EQUITY. THIS ALSO HAS TO DO WITH PROFESSIONA LEARNING . PROFESSIONAL LEARNING HAPPENING , BUT THERE NEEDS TO BE A CONSISTENT LONG-RANGE PLAN. THAT'S WHAT YOU LOOK AT WHEN YOU DO STRATEGIC PLANNING. WHAT DO YO
[00:40:06]
WANT TO SEE HAPPENING IN EVERY CLASSROOM? YOU NEED TO THINK ABOUT AN INSTRUCTIONAL MODEL . HAPPENING IN EVERY CLASSROOM, PLAN PROFESSIONAL LEARNING AROUND THAT WITH COACHING TO FOLLOW-UP AND MODEL TO ENSURE THAT EVERY STAFF MEMBER IS UNDERSTANDING AND BEING ABLE TO IMPLEMENT THAT EFFECTIVELY. SO YOU ARE SEEING THAT REALIZED I CLASSROOM DELIVERY. THOSE ARE THE THINGS WE TRAIN ON, WE COAC ON AND CONSISTENTLY HAVE THAT EXPECTATION THAT IS INCLUDED I PLANNING. WHATEVER YOU CHOOSE TO FOCUS ON, YOU WOULD ADD STRATEGIES AND SUGGESTIONS .IT'S ALL A CYCLICAL PROCESS THAT RELIES ON ONE ANOTHER TO CONTINUOUSLY PROGRESS AND GROW. AN IMPORTANT ACCESS IS MONITORING. WHATEVER GETS MONITORED GETS DONE. YOU NEED TO FOCUS ON THE PRIORITIES THAT YOU HAVE SET, BASED ON WHAT STUDENTS AND TEACHERS NEED. AN YOU WORK WITH TEACHERS AND PRINCIPALS TO ESTABLISH THOSE EXPECTATIONS. AND HOW TO USE THAT TO IMPROVE INSTRUCTION? THE ARTIFACTS THAT WE ANALYZE WE DID FIND THAT MOST WERE ON GRADE LEVEL . THAT IS VERY GOOD. MOST OF THE TIME WE DO NO FIND THAT AT ALL. WHEN I TALK ABOUT STUDENT ARTIFACTS, I AM TALKING ABOUT WORK THE STUDENTS ARE DOING IN THE CLASSROOM. THA WERE PROVIDED TO US. EVEN THOUGH THEY WERE ON GRADE LEVEL THEY WERE OF LOW COGNITIVE DEMAND. WHICH MEANS THEY WERE A THE LOWER THINKING LEVELS.
REMEMBER AND RECALL, NOT THOSE HIGHER LEVELS OF EVALUATION, CREATING , AND EVALUATING. 70 TO 80% OF THE DOCUMENTS THAT WE ANALYZED WERE OF MORE CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES , NOT REAL-WORLD OR WRITING . ALL O THAT BALANCES OUT, AND YOU BEGI TO SEE THOSE TRENDS. THIS IS WHAT WE SAW IN THE CLASSROOM.
SO WHEN YOU START COLLECTING AL THAT DATA, IT BEGINS TO FORM A PICTURE. WE ALSO FOUND THAT THE DOCUMENTS, SOME OF THEM DID NEED TO REFLECT MORE CULTURAL RESPONSIVENESS AND DIVERSITY.
FOR EXAMPLE, SOCIAL STUDIES. THERE WAS NOT A DIVERSE REPRESENTATION OF THE DIFFEREN CULTURES AND IDENTITIES WITHIN THOSE. FOCUS AREA FOUR. REALL DEALS WITH FEEDBACK, STUDENT ASSESSMENT. AGAIN, THERE ARE ASSESSMENTS OCCURRING, THEY AR PRIMARILY ASSESSING AREAS THAT WERE ASSESSED BY THE STATE. BU AN AREA WE NEED TO FOCUS ON IS THAT ONGOING DAILY ASSESSMENT T ENSURE STUDENTS ARE LEARNING I THE MOMENT. AND ARE THEY MASTERING THE STANDARDS ? THE CURRICULUM THAT THEY NEED TO TO BE SUCCESSFUL. JUST LIKE IN TH SCOPE OF CURRICULUM, WHERE EVERY COURSE AND GRADE HAD A CURRICULUM DOCUMENT, THE SCOPE OF ASSESSMENT WAS NOT ENTIRELY COMPLETE. BECAUSE WE ARE ONLY ASSESSING THE MAJORITY OF THE ASSESSED AREAS. THERE ARE NOT FORMATIVE ASSESSMENTS THAT WIL SHOW MASTERY OF THE CURRICULUM.
[00:45:01]
WE ALSO LOOK AT IS ANYONE USING DATA TO DRIVE INSTRUCTION? WE DID FIND THAT DATA WAS BEING USED. AT THE SAME TIME, THERE WASN'T A SYSTEMATIC PROCESS FOR HOW IT OCCURS, WHEN IT OCCURS, HOW WE ARE USING THAT TO DRIVE INSTRUCTION TO CLOSE ACHIEVEMEN GAPS AND MOVE OUR STUDENTS TO HIGHER LEVELS. WE DID FIND IN LOOKING AT TRENDS , Y'ALL ARE CONSISTENTLY ABOVE THE STATE AVERAGE. THERE IS NO DENYING THAT. YOUR STUDENTS ARE PERFORMING WELL. BUT THERE ARE SOME GAPS AND SOME ARE MORE STRUGGLING STUDENTS THAT SOME OF THESE PRACTICES AND SYSTEMS WOULD ALLEVIATE SOME OF THAT.PRODUCTIVITY AND FOCUS AREA. THE DISTRICT IS IN A SOLID POSITION. BUT ONE THING I WANT TO POINT OUT IS OUR DOLLARS AR THIN. WE NEVER KNOW WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN FINANCIALLY.
THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT DOES BUDGETS ANNUALLY, WE HAVE TO BE CAREFUL. THE QUESTION WE HAVE T ASK IS, ARE WE GETTING A RETUR ON INVESTMENT? IN MANY DISTRICT , WE LOOK AT THIS. BUT MOST DISTRICTS HAVE A LOT OF INSTRUCTIONAL PROGRAMS THAT THEY USE. AND THERE NEEDS TO B A WAY TO DETERMINE ARE WE GETTING OUT OF THOSE WHAT WE NEED TO TO WARRANT CONTINUED SPENDING THE MONEY ON THOSE PROGRAMS TO CONTINUE? OR IS THERE A BETTER WAY THAT WE CAN UTILIZE THE FUNDS OTHER THAN PROGRAMS ? THAT'S WHAT WE TALK ABOUT WHEN WE TALK ABOUT AN EVALUATION PROCESS THAT IS REALLY NEEDED WHEN YOU DETERMINE, ARE WE GOING TO BUY NEW PROGRAM? WHAT IS OUR PROCESS FOR SELECTING. AND THEN, WHAT IS OUR PROCESS FOR REVIEWING IT WHEN IT IS IMPLEMENTED? HOW DO WE KNOW IF ANYONE IS USING IT? ARE WE MONITORING IF ANYONE IS USING IT? AND HOW MUCH IT IS COSTIN THE DISTRICT. AND THEN, ARE THEY LEARNING FROM IT? IS IT HELPING THEM SHOW PROGRESS? IF IT'S NOT, THEN A DECISION NEED TO BE MADE. DO WE CONTINUE THIS, DO WE MODIFY HOW IT IS BEING USED, OR DO WE DECIDE TO NOT DO THIS PROGRAM ANYMORE AND MAKE SURE WE ARE USING ONE THAT IS REALLY GIVING US THE BENEFIT OF WHAT WE NEED. SO THAT'S A VERY HIGH LEVEL PROCESS THAT TAKES A LONG TIME TO GET IN PLACE. BUT WITH CONSISTENT EFFORT, IT CAN BE DONE BUT IT TAKES AT LEAST 3 TO 5 YEARS TO GET A GOOD PROGRAM EVALUATION.
WE ENDED UP WITH FIVE RECOMMENDATIONS. YOU WILL FIND THOSE IN THE AUDIT. THEY HAVE SPECIFIC ACTIONS WITH EXAMPLES THEY DO GIVE SOME TIMELINES FOR THOSE. THEY ARE BASED ON MULTIPLE FINDINGS. YOU WILL FIND A FULL RECOMMENDATION BASE AROUND ALL OF THE CURRICULUM ASPECT. THEN THERE WILL BE A FULL ACCOMMODATION AROUND ASSESSMENT. AND IT PROVIDES JUST A STEP STEP VIEW WITH THOSE TIMELINES. IT IS REALLY PRESENTED IN TWO PARTS. GOVERNANCE , THINGS THAT THE BOARD WOULD LIKELY HELP CARRY OUT. AND ADMINISTRATION . SO WHAT IS THE BOARD'S ROLE IN THIS? AS A SCHOOL SYSTEM , IT REALLY DETERMINES WHICH RECOMMENDATIONS WE ARE GOING T TACKLE FIRST. THAT'S WHAT WE HAVE TALKED ABOUT. IT'S NOT EXPECTED FOR THAT TO HAPPEN ALL IN ONE YEAR. THERE IS JUST NO WAY. WHAT NEEDS TO HAPPEN IS TAKE THOSE RECOMMENDATIONS, SIT DOWN AND GO THROUGH OUR HIGHES PRIORITY NEEDS, AND HOW WE PUT THAT IN A LOGICAL ORDER THAT WE CAN EFFECTIVELY DO ANNUALLY .
THE BOARD WOULD ENSURE THE FINDINGS OF THE AUDIT ARE SUPPORTED WITHIN THAT PLAN. ADOPT ANY RESIDES -- REVISED POLICIES . THAT NEED TO BE STRENGTHENED AS WE HAVE
[00:50:02]
IDENTIFIED IN THE AUDIT. TO FUND RECOMMENDATIONS THAT REQUIRE INVESTMENT TO . THAT WOULD BE SOMETHING THAT IF YOU FOCUS ON THAT , EVERYONE GETS GOING IN THE SAME DIRECTION.AND DEVELOP A TIMELINE FOR TO PRESENT PROGRESS AND UPDATES VIA SCHEDULED REPORTS AS TO TH PROGRESS BEING MADE IN IMPLEMENTING THESE RECOMMENDATIONS AND REALIZING
THE RESULTS. >> DO YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS?
>> THERE ARE SO MANY FACETS TO THAT. YOU HAD SAID OUR POLICY NEEDS TO REFLECT AND BE MORE SPECIFIC ON WHO DEVELOPS THE CURRICULUM. AND YOU MARRIED THAT WITH JOB DESCRIPTION. I WOULD'VE THOUGHT WE ALREADY HAD THIS. OVERALL, DR. JOHNSON I RESPONSIBLE FOR EVERYTHING CURRICULUM WISE. HOW SPECIFIC
ARE YOU TALKING? >> THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE CURRICULUM, THE SYSTEMS IN PLAC TO DEVELOP THE CURRICULUM AND THEN TAKE THAT A STEP FURTHER THAT REQUIRES THE USE OF THAT.
BECAUSE THAT IS THE FULL CURRICULUM POLICY DEVELOPED AT THE SYSTEM LEVEL, A DISTRICTWID CURRICULUM, THAT EVERYONE IS REQUIRED TO USE. IS NOT A CURRICULUM ANYONE HAVE TO IMPROVE OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT. DISTRICT LEVEL BASE ON THE STANDARDS WITH THE COMPONENTS THAT CREATE A QUALITY CURRICULUM. THAT THEN EVERYON IS REQUIRED TO USE IN PLANNING
AND DELIVERING. >> IN JOB DESCRIPTIONS, JUST OUTLINE. THERE ARE JUST A FEW KEY COMPONENTS . DR. JOHNSON'S IS NOT MISSING ANYHING. BUT THERE ARE SOME OTHER ASPECTS WITH MONITORING AND THINGS LIKE THAT THAT NEED TO BE TIGHTENED UP A LITTLE BIT. THAT'S HOW YOU HOLD PEOPLE ACCOUNTABLE. THE POLICIES MAKE SURE IT CAN GET DONE, THEN THE JOB DESCRIPTIONS ALLOW YOU TO MAKE THAT EVALUATION AND THEIR
RESPONSIBILITIES. >> WHETHER WE ARE LOOKING AT THE DIRECTOR OF SYSTEM AND INSTRUCTIONAL PERFORMANCE OR WE START LOOKING AT THE SUPERVISOR , YOU SEE A COMMON STATEMENT ABOUT RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DEVELOPMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION OF CURRICULUM ASSESSMENT AND INSTRUCTION. BUT IT'S THE SAME ACROSS THE BOARD. SO LOOKING A GENERAL STATEMENTS AND MAKING THEM MORE SPECIFIC TO WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENS AS A RESULT O DEVELOPING THE CURRICULUM . BEING MUCH MORE SPECIFIC ABOUT
WHAT THOSE ITEMS ARE. >> YOU SAID THERE WAS SOME MEASURE OF INCONSISTENCY IN IMPLEMENTATION OF CURRICULUM.
MY QUESTION WOULD BE, I HAVE T IMAGINE EVERY CLASSROOM DOES THINGS DIFFERENTLY. AND TEACHERS ARE SUPPOSED TO HAVE A LEVEL OF INDEPENDENCE. MY QUESTION IS, HOW DID YOU , HOW DID CALVERT STACK UP AGAINST OTHER SYSTEMS? WAS THERE LESS INCONSISTENCY? OR DID YOU FIND SOME OF THAT MIGHT BE HEALTHY?
[00:57:32]
THEY HAVE THAT FREEDOM TO BE ABLE TO MAKE THOSE DETERMINATIONS OF HOW BEST MY STUDENTS WILL GET THIS IN ALIGNMENT WITH THE TYPE OF INSTRUCTION WE EXPECT TO SEE THAT WE BELIEVE PRODUCES THE BEST RESULTS.[01:00:05]
PROGRAMS , I DON'T KNOW THAT. BUT WE EVALUATED AND THEY AREN'T GIVING US ANY TYPE OF RETURN. SO WHAT CAN WE DO WITH THAT MONEY VERSUS WHAT IS HAPPENING RIGHT NOW? THAT OVERALL BUDGETING PROCESS THAT IS VERY CRITICAL TO DETERMININ YOUR NEEDS AND REALLY DIVERTIN THAT MONEY TO WHERE IT NEEDS T GO TO MAKE THOSE ADJUSTMENTS POSSIBLE.>> HOW MANY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT DAYS DO WE HAVE FOR
>> 13.5 . WE HAVE 10 DAYS, FIVE ARE AT THE BEGINNING AND FIVE THROUGHOUT THE REMAINDER.
>> WILL ANY OF THOSE GO TOWARD THESE TYPE OF GOALS?
>> WHERE WE ARE WITH THE AUDIT IS WE RECEIVED IT, MRS. TIDWEL WAS VERY KIND TO MEET EARLIER TODAY WITH OUR INSTRUCTIONAL DEPARTMENT TO GO THROUGH THE FINDINGS AND TALK ABOUT WHERE THE GAPS ARE. WE'VE ALREADY PUT SOME THINGS IN PLACE WITH SCOPE AND SEQUENCE AND UNITS OF STUDY WHICH OUTLINE STRATEGIES AND VOCABULARY , DIFFERENT INSTRUCTIONAL APPROACHES THAT TEACHER COULD USE IN ORDER TO PLAN CONNECTIONS TO OUR FRAMEWORK AND DIFFERENT TYPES O RESOURCES. IT'S A WORK IN PROGRESS. EACH SUPERVISOR WITHIN THE DEPARTMENT HAS MANY CONTENTS OR GRADE LEVELS THEY ARE WORKING WITH. SO THEY REALL HAVE MADE QUITE A BIT OF EFFOR TO SHIFT THE CURRICULUM. BUT ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS HAS THREE MAJOR COMPONENTS, AND MAKING SURE THOSE ARE IN LINE AND SUPPORTED TO THAT FRAMEWORK IS A WORK IN PROGRESS. SO WE ARE NOT THERE YET.
ADDITIONALLY, SCHEDULING PROFESSIONAL LEARNING , IT HAS BEEN FOCUSED IN ON INSTRUCTIONA APPROACHES. THE INCLUSION OF WRITING AND HIGHER-LEVEL THINKING INTO OUR WORK. IT WAS STALLED DURING THE PANDEMIC AS RESULT OF EVERYTHING ELSE GOING ON. HOW WE IMPLEMENT BLENDED LEARNING AND VIRTUAL INSTRUCTIO FOR OUR STUDENTS EFFECTIVELY DID A LOT OF PROFESSIONAL LEARNING ON THOSE PIECES. AND AS WE HAVE MOVED BACK IN AND LOOKED AT RESOURCES, LOOKING A OUR RESOURCES DURING THE PANDEMIC WE HAD A LOT OF OPPORTUNITY TO PURCHASE RESOURCES THAT ARE ELECTRONIC. AND WE HAVE ASKED OUR SUPERVISORS THIS YEAR TO REALL FOCUSING ON THE USAGE OF THOSE RESOURCES. ONCE THEY LOOKED AT RESOURCE USAGE BY SCHOOL, TRYING TO GET DOWN TO STUDENT USES HAS MADE A DIFFERENCE. WE ARE NOT QUITE THERE YET ON WHETHER OR NOT IT IS MAKING A DIFFERENCE BUT WE ARE LOOKING A WHETHER RESOURCES ARE BEING USED. IT'S A WORK IN PROGRESS, BUT WE ARE DEFINITELY MOVING FORWARD. I CAN'T SIT UP HERE AN SAY THAT WE HAVE ENOUGH PROFESSIONAL LEARNING. WHEN YO LOOK AT AN ELEMENTARY CLASSROOM AND I AM RESPONSIBLE AND ONE WORLD ENGLISH, MATH, SCIENCE AN SOCIAL STUDIES. OR IN ANOTHER, I TEACH MATH AND SCIENCE AND MY COLLEGE TEACHES ELA AND SOCIA STUDIES. IT'S A LOT TO MAKE SURE THAT TEACHERS ARE TEACHIN GRADE LEVEL AND THE CONTENT.
AND THOSE THINGS ARE NOTED THAT THEY ARE TEACHING THE CONTENT AND GRADE LEVEL BUT TO THEN LOO AT THAT CONTENT AND DETERMINE THE BARRIERS THAT A STUDENT MAY ENCOUNTER WITH ENVIRONMENT, INSTRUCTIONAL CURRICULUM AND PLAN FOR THAT. THAT TAKES A LOT OF TIME. TEACHERS NEED THAT PROFESSIONAL LEARNING. THAT DOESN'T HAPPEN WITHOUT PROFESSIONAL LEARNING ONGOING AND THEN THAT OPPORTUNITY FOR COACHING WITHIN THE CLASSROOM TO MAKE SURE I KNOW HOW TO. SO THOSE ARE THINGS WE HAVE TO LOO
AT. >> I WOULD LIKE TO HEAR A COMMITMENT THAT THE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WILL B DONE DURING THE SCHOOL DAY AS OPPOSED TO IF YOU WANT PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OR TO BECOME STRONGER IN SOME CONCEPT , ATTEND THIS AFTERSCHOL WORKSHOP OR THINGS LIKE THAT. W
[01:05:03]
NEED TO COMMIT TO TRAINING OUR TEACHERS TO THE HIGHEST LEVEL POSSIBLE DURING THEIR WORK TIME>> I WOULD AGREE WITH THAT. AND I WILL SHARE SOMETHING WE'VE DONE AND THE WAY THAT WE HAVE ACCOMPLISHED THE ABILITY TO HAVE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT DURING THE SCHOOL DAY OR WHEN THE TEACHERS ARE ON OUR TIME IS THAT WE DESIGNATE THE DAYS THA , BASED ON OUR NEEDS, WHAT WE CALL DISTRICT PROFESSIONAL LEARNING. THEN BECAUSE SOME CAMPUSES HAVE INDIVIDUAL NEEDS, AND SOME PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SHOULD BE CAMPUS-BASED , THAT SUPPORTS WHAT WE ARE ALREADY DOING AT TH DISTRICT LEVEL. THERE MIGHT BE A COUPLE OF CAMPUS DAYS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. BUT THEN WE ALSO PROVIDE OUR TEACHERS WITH INSTRUCTIONAL PLANNING. THEY ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE PLANNING TO BE ABLE TO PLAN THOSE HIGH-QUALITY LESSONS. TH THING I'M GETTING AT IS, YOU HAVE TO DESIGNATE WHAT YOU WANT THOSE TO BE. IF YOU ARE GOING TO DO DISTRICTWIDE INITIATIVES, WHERE YOU HAVE EVERYONE WITH LONG-TERM INITIATIVES, DECIDING WHAT WE WANT TO SEE IN EVERY CLASSROOM, WE ARE GOING TO FIND THE BEST RESEARCH-BASED PROFESSIONAL LEARNING WE CAN FIND, START TRAINING AND INCLUD A COACHING COMPONENT. AND MONITOR THAT YEAR AFTER YEAR TO DETERMINE IF THAT IS HELPING O WORKING, YOU'VE GOT TO SET ASIDE THE TIME FOR THAT. AND I CAN'T JUST BE A FEW PEOPLE GOING TO TRAINING AND COMING BACK. BECAUSE IT'S INCONSISTENT. AND EVERYONE IS NOT HEARING THE SAME THING. BUT THAT TAKES MONEY . IT TAKES TIM IN THE CALENDAR AND IT TAKES TH FINANCIAL BACKING TO MAKE THAT HAPPEN. THEY CAN'T DO THAT KIN OF QUALITY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WITHOUT THAT TYPE O SUPPORT.
>> I AGREE COMPLETELY, AND USING DATA TO DRIVE INSTRUCTION. BEFORE I RETIRED, WE LOOKED AT THE DISTRICT GOALS , AND MY PRINCIPAL LOOK A OUR DATA AND DECIDED WHAT PROFESSIONAL DEVELOP MEANT WE NEEDED AS A TEAM. IT MADE US A INCREDIBLY STRONG TEAM. BUT TH TIME WAS GIVEN TO US , THE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WAS GIVEN TO US AND IT WAS DONE DURING THE DAY. I THINK THAT'S CRUCIAL.
>> THERE'S ONE MORE THING EMMA SOMETHING THAT WAS SAID . ABOU THE RESOURCES THAT TEACHERS USE AND ARE PROVIDING. ONE OF THE THINGS THAT IS VERY DIFFICULT I THE DISTRICT, WHEN YOU PURCHAS THOSE RESOURCES AND GET THOSE AND MAKE SURE THEY ARE ALIGNED TO THE MARYLAND STANDARDS, AT THE LEVEL THAT YOU WANT THEM T BE, THEN YOU'VE GOT TO HAVE A SET OR PROCESS FOR IMPROVING ANY ADDITIONAL RESOURCES THAT TEACHERS OR ANYONE ELSE WANTS T USE. THERE'S A LOT OF STUFF OU THERE, A LOT OF STUFF THAT IS NOT ALIGNED TO THE MARYLAND STANDARDS. AND THERE NEEDS TO BE PROCESSES IN PLACE THAT THOS HAVE TO GO THROUGH A VETTING PROCESS. BEFORE PEOPLE CAN JUS USE WHATEVER THEY WANT TO USE.
BECAUSE THAT IS PART OF A CURRICULUM , HAVING RESOURCES PROVIDED TO SAY HERE ARE THE RESOURCES THAT ARE ALIGNED TO THESE STANDARDS THAT ARE AVAILABLE FOR YOU TO CHOOSE
FROM. >> WE DO WANT THEM TO SPEND
[01:10:55]
TIME ON STAFF DEVELOPMENT AND PLANNING. BUT WHAT HAPPENS IS IF YOU DON'T GIVE THE PRACTITIONERS THAT ARE OUT THERE EVERY DAY OPPORTUNITY FO INPUT, SOMETIMES WE MISS THE MARK. AND THEY HAVE THAT EXPERIENCE. ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE HAVE BEGUN TO DO, A WA THAT WE TRIED TO REMEDY THAT, NOT ONLY GIVE FEEDBACK BUT TAKE THE BURDEN OF THAT MAJOR WORK OFF OF THEM. WE HAVE COACHES THAT COME IN AND THEY WORK IN THE SUMMER. WHAT IS WORKING HERE? DOES THIS NEED TO BE MOVED? WHAT DO YOU SEE THAT NEEDS TO BE CHANGED?>> THAT JUST DOESN'T WORK. GIVING THEM A DIFFERENT ROLE IN IT AND HAVING SPECIALISTS THAT ARE ABLE TO DO THAT, IT REALLY TAKES STRONG CONTENT SPECIALISTS. YOU HAVE TO HAVE SOMEONE THAT IS A STRONG PERSON THAT HAS LOTS OF KNOWLEDGE OF THAT PARTICULAR AREA. I WOULD PROBABLY HAVE MORE THAN ONE.
BUT USING THE TEACHERS AT THA FEEDBACK PIECE, HOW DO WE MAKE THIS BETTER? USING THEM IN THA WAY VERSUS BEING RESPONSIBLE FO
WRITING . >> I JUST HAVE ONE LAST QUESTION. WAS CLASS-SIZE CONSIDERED WHEN LOOKING AT
THESE PRACTICES? >> WE DID NOT CONSIDER CLASS-SIZE. BUT ANY CLASSES I WENT IN WERE NOT ALARMING TO ME I'VE BEEN IN SOME DISTRICTS WHERE THEY HAVE 35 IN A CLASSROOM. SO YOUR CLASS-SIZE IS NOT ALARMING THING.
>> THANK YOU, I JUST HAVE A COUPLE QUESTIONS. COULD YOU TELL ME ABOUT THE STAKEHOLDERS?
>> MOSTLY PARENTS, ANYBODY NOT WORKING IN THE SYSTEM WOULD BE CONSIDERED A EXTERNAL STAKEHOLDER. TO MY KNOWLEDGE, WE DID NOT INTERVIEW ANY COMMUNITY MEMBERS.
>> YOU MENTIONED ONLINE SURVEYS. HOW MANY DID YOU DO?
AND WHAT WERE THEY ABOUT? >> WE DID A TEACHERS SURVEY, ADMINISTRATORS SURVEY, CAMPUS DEMONSTRATORS. AND PARENT. I CAN GET YOU THE EXACT NUMBERS O EACH.
>> ARE THEY DISCUSSING THE NARRATIVE?
>> AND THEY ARE DISCUSSING THE EXECUTIVE SUMMARY. WE HAVE SO MANY QUESTIONS. WHO DO YOU GET THE MOST SUPPORT FROM? WE GATHER THE INFORMATION THAT IS RELATED TO THESE FOCUS AREAS THAT SUBSTANTIATE THE THINGS THAT WE SEE IN DOCUMENTS OR
[01:15:05]
OTHER OBSERVATIONS. >> WHAT TYPE OF SUPPORT WILL YO BE OFFERING THE DISTRICT? OR HAVE YOU DISCUSSED THAT?
>> WE HAVE NOT TALKED ABOUT ANY OF THAT. THAT WOULD GO THROUGH
CURRICULUM MANAGEMENT. >> ALL RIGHT. I LOOK FORWARD TO IT. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR WORK ON THIS.
>> JUST TO CLOSE OUT, THANK YO FOR COMING TODAY AND WORKING WITH OUR INSTRUCTION DEPARTMENT BUT I ALSO WOULD LIKE TO THANK THE ADMINISTRATORS, TEACHERS AND WHO HELPED COORDINATE SOM OF OUR FOCUS AREA GROUPS. THERE WAS A LOT OF WORK THAT WENT INT LOOKING FOR AND DOCUMENTING ARTIFACTS, REALLY APPRECIATE EVERYBODY'S COMMITMENT TO THAT. ALL THOSE OTHER PIECES THAT HAPPENED HERE, THEY WERE PEOPLE IN OTHER DEPARTMENTS HELPING T FULFILL ALL THOSE DEPARTMENTS. SO JUST THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR
THEIR EFFORTS. >> THANK YOU ALL.

DAUGHTER AND HER CLASS WERE IN THE CAFETERIA FOR A PRESENTATIO DEALING WITH SEA TURTLES. MY DAUGHTER IS SITTING NEXT TO HER FRIEND. FROM WHAT I HEAR, THE BOY BEHIND THEM GOT MAD BECAUSE HE WAS UNDER THE IMPRESSION MY DAUGHTER LAUGHED AT HIM SO HE PROCEEDED TO SAY THAT HE WAS GOING TO BRING HIS DAD RIFLE TO SCHOOL TOMORROW AND SHOOT THEM. HE THEN PROCEEDED TO SAY SAY H TO JESUS FOR ME. ONCE MY DAUGHTER COULD GET TO HER TEACHER, SHE LET HER KNOW WHAT WAS SAID AND THE TEACHER LET THEM KNOW IMMEDIATELY. NOT SUR THE STRING OF EVENTS THAT HAPPENED AFTER THAT. OUR PRINCIPAL WAS OUT THAT AFTERNOO , IT WAS UP TO THE VICE PRINCIPAL TO HANDLE IT. I AM TOLD SHE WENT THROUGH THE LIST OF PEOPLE TO CONTACT THE FAMILY OF THAT CHILD THAT THREATENED AND THE SAFETY OFFICER ET CETERA. I HAVE BEEN TOLD THE SHERIFF WENT OUT TO THE HOME AN ENSURE THE GUNS IN THIS CHILD HOME WERE PUT AWAY AND STOWED SO THIS CHILD COULD NOT ACCESS THEM. THIS CHILD WOULD NOT BE IN SCHOOL ON WEDNESDAY OR THURSDAY BUT WOULD RETURN FRIDAY. HE WOULDN'T BE IN THE CLASSROOM ON FRIDAY. BUT HE WOULD BE IN THE CLASSROOM THE FOLLOWING MONDAY. SOME QUESTIONS. HOW IS IT THAT THIS CHILD, HIS FAMILY WAS CALLED AN EVERYONE THAT HAS TO BE CALLED, BUT THE VICTIMS FAMILY WERE NO CALLED UNTIL AFTER THE SCHOOL DAY? IF YOUR CHILD HAD JUST GOTTEN IN TROUBLE FOR A SERIOUS THREAT, YOU WOULDN'T GO STRAIGH HOME AND MOVE THE GUN TO A SAF PLACE. IT'S A GREAT START THE OFFICER WENT THERE THE DAY OF BUT WHAT ABOUT AFTER? WHY IS IT THAT MY CHILD WAS SPOKEN TO WITHOUT THIS PARENT BEING THERE WHY WEREN'T THEY CALLED IMMEDIATELY? AND THIS CHILD I ONLY EIGHT. THE STUDENT THAT MADE THE THREAT WILL RETURN TO SCHOOL ON MONDAY AND BE IN THE SAME CLASS WITH THE CHILDREN HE THREATENED. THESE WORDS ARE BEING TAKEN SO LIGHTLY. DO WE NOT REMEMBER IN MARCH, THE NEWPORT NEWS SIX-YEAR-OLD THAT SHOT THE TEACHER? WHY IS THERE NOT A PSYCH EVAL TO RETURN TO SCHOOL? WHEN IS IT ENOUGH? WH IS THIS STUDENT BEING PROTECTE AND THE OTHER STUDENTS AND STAFF IN THE SCHOOL AND CLASSROOM NOT BEING PROTECTED? THIS PARENT HAS DONE A LOT OF RESEARCH , IT SEEMS THIS CHILD HAS BEEN STRUGGLING FOR QUITE SOME TIME. WHAT ARE WE DOING T HELP THIS CHILD? THAT SEEMS TO BE STRUGGLING OVER AND OVER. THERE IS A REQUEST ABOUT THE POLICIES THAT ARE LACKING HERE IN THE SCHOOL DISTRICT AND WE NEED TO DO MORE. THIS MOM IS ASKING WE DO MORE TO PROTECT ALSTUDENTS AND STAFF. THANK YOU. >> THANK YOU FOR YOUR COMMENTS.

THE SPECIFICS PROCEDURES OUTLINED DEFINITIONS AND REGULATIONS THAT ARE CONSIDERED UPHOLDING THE POLICY , THE ADMINISTERED OF PROCEDURES WILL BE REVIEWED FOLLOWING POLICY APPROVAL AND BE PRESENTED TO TH SUPERINTENDENT. AWARDS. MR. TAYLOR. >> GOOD AFTERNOON. I AM SUPERVISOR OF FINANCE AND PROCUREMENT. JOINING ME FOR TH FIRST REQUEST IS DR. ANDERSON. THE FIRST REQUEST IS THE RECOMMENDATION OF AWARDING SERVICES. QUALIFIED CONTRACTOR TO PROVIDE SPEECH AND LANGUAGE SERVICES IN 39 VENDOR SUBMITTE PROPOSALS. OUR CAPACITY TO DELIVER SERVICES TO STUDENTS WITHIN OUR DISTRICT ON AN AS-NEEDED BASIS. WE REQUEST THAT THE BOARD AWARDED CONTRACT FOR SPEECH AND LANGUAGE SERVICE TO THE FIRM'S COMMUNICATOR. FUNDING WILL BE THROUGH THE
GENERAL FUND. >> I'LL TAKE A MOTION.
>> MOVED TO APPROVE. >> THANK YOU. THERE IS A MOTIO AND A SECOND. ANY DISCUSSION? ANY OPPOSED? THE MOTION PASSES BEHAVIOR ANALYST SERVICES. TO PROVIDE BEHAVIOR ANALYST SERVICES . BEHAVIOR HEALTH SERVICES TO FIRMS INDICATED.
>> YOU SAID 22 BEHAVIOR ANALYSIS.
>> I CAN CHECK THAT FOR YOU. >> I HAD A QUESTION ABOUT ALL O THESE. THERE ARE TREMENDOUS SHORTAGES IN OUR SCHOOL SYSTEMS, THAT'S WHY WE WANT TO BRING THESE PEOPLE IN CONTRACT.
AND THERE ARE SO MANY OF THEM. ARE THESE PEOPLE THAT WE CAN'T ATTRACT THEM BECAUSE OF PAY DISCREPANCIES? OR IS IT THE COMMITMENT? ARE THEY OVERWORKED? DOES ANYONE KNOW WHY THERE ARE SO MANY FIRMS OFFERING THE SERVICES CONTRACT BUT WE CAN'T FIND EMPLOYEES? I THINK THERE IS A POSSIBILITY WHEN YOU WORK FOR A CONTRACTOR. IT IS NOT FULL-TIME
[01:50:07]
NECESSARILY . IT'S MORE THE FLEXIBILITY AND WORK. AND WE ARE ALSO FINDING THAT SPEECH IN PARTICULAR , WE OPTED TO A VIRTUAL OPTION. BUT THERE IS JUST FLEXIBILITY. WHEN WE HAV A VACANCY, IT IS EXTREMELY RARE THAT THE MAJORITY OF THESE EVE HAVE A CANDIDATE FOR US. SAYIN WHO HAS A CANDIDATE, I AM HAPP IF TWO OR THREE OF THEM HAVE SOMEBODY AVAILABLE. WE HAVE CERTIFIED PEOPLE TO PROVIDE THESE SERVICES.>> I AM NOT ASKING IF THEY ARE CHARGING MORE, I'M WANTING TO KNOW IF WE ARE INCREASING THE NUMBER OF PROFESSIONALS WE WILL HAVE. BECAUSE THAT SEEMS TO BE WHERE OUR NEED IS.
>> THERE AREN'T INCREASES IN LOCAL FUNDS. SO YOU MIGHT SEE SOME ADDITIONAL. BUT THAT IS NOT PREDICTABLE AT THIS POINT.
HAVE A MOTION AND SECOND ON THE FLOOR. ALL THOSE IN FAVOR? AN
OPPOSED? >> THE THIRD REQUEST IS FOR AWARDING OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY SERVICES. CALVERT COUNTY PUBLI SCHOOLS ISSUED A BID TO PROVID OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY SERVICES.
AND 29 VENDOR SUBMITTED PROPOSALS. CONTRACTS IN ORDER TO SUPPLEMENT OUR CAPACITY TO DELIVER SERVICES TO STUDENTS WITHIN THE DISTRICT. A SUMMARY OF THE RESULTS BEFORE YOU, BASED ON THAT WE RESPECTFULLY REQUEST THAT THE BOARD AWARDED CONTRACTS TO FIRMS INDICATED WITHIN THE MEMO. FUNDING FOR THESE WILL BE THROUGH THE GENERAL FUND.
>> I WILL TAKE A MOTION. >> MOVED TO APPROVE.
>> IS THERE A SECOND? ANY DISCUSSION?
>> I NOTICED IT WAS FOR A TWO-YEAR CONTRACT. IS THAT CORRECT? AND IS THIS FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
TRAINING OR SOMETHING ELSE? >> THIS IS FOR OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY SERVICES. I THINK YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT THE ONE NEXT.
THE ONE THAT COMES UP NEXT IS FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT.
SO THE MOTION ON THE FLOOR IS FOR APPROVAL OF OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY SERVICES FOR STUDENTS. ANY ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS? WE WILL MOVE TO A VOTE. ANY OPPOSED? MOTION PASSES 5-0.
>> AWARDING SPECIAL EDUCATION INCREASES PRACTICES. AND INVITATION TO BID FOR QUALIFIED CONTRACTORS TO PROVIDE COACHING , SUPPORTING AND PROFESSIONAL LEARNING AND FOR SPECIAL EDUCATION STAFF TO BUILD KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS TO PROMOTE INCLUSIVE PRACTICES. DEVELOPED DEMONSTRATION SITES FOR SCHOOL-BASED INCLUSION OF ALL LEARNERS AND SUPPORT DISTRICT LEADERSHIP AND PLANNING. 12 VENDORS SUBMITTED PROPOSALS AS SHOWN IN THE BID TAB, WE RESPECTFULLY REQUEST THE BOARD AWARDED A CONTRACT FOR INCLUSIV PRACTICES AND SPECIAL EDUCATION IN THE TOTAL AMOUNT OF $377,68 FOR A CONTRACT PERIOD BEGINNIN MAY 2023 THROUGH JUNE 2025. FUNDING IS THROUGH MEDICAID.
>> MOTION TO APPROVE? MOTION AND A SECOND. ANY QUESTIONS?
>> THIS IS FOR A TWO-YEAR CONTRACT.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOP MEANT? >> THERE MIGHT BE SOME DURING
[01:55:07]
THAT TIME BUT THIS IS THE CONTINUATION OF THE WORK WE'VE BEEN DOING WITH THE INCLUSION FACILITATORS AND TEAMS. SO WHAT HAPPENS OFTEN WITHIN THE WORK WITHIN THE BUILDING AND DURING REGULAR MEETINGS AS WELL THERE MAY BE SOME PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT DAYS BUT IT'S ALSO WITHIN THE WORK DAY.>> IS THAT GOING TO CONFLICT WITH , WE HAD JUST SPENT A LOT OF TIME TALKING ABOUT TRAINING TEACHERS DURING PROFESSIONAL
DEVELOPMENT . >> THIS IS FOR INCLUSIVE PRACTICES AND WE HAVE BEEN WORKING ON A BID. THE GROUP THAT IS BEING AWARDED. AND WE HAVE HAD A SYSTEMIC PROCESS FO HELPING OUR TEACHERS AND DEMONSTRATORS UNDERSTAND THE WORK OF INCLUSIVE PRACTICES. IN ORDER TO COMPLETE ALL THE TRAINING FOR STAFF AND SCHOOLS, THIS CONCLUDES THAT WORK. SO THE WORK OF INCLUSIVE PRACTICE DOESN'T SUPERSEDE THE WORK THA
WE JUST TALKED ABOUT. >> HOW MANY YEARS HAVE WE DONE
THIS ALREADY? >> EIGHT YEARS. WE SLOWED DURING THE PANDEMIC. SO WE WEREN'T ABLE TO BRING ON NEW SCHOOLS. SO WE PICKED UP AND WE ARE AT THE POINT THAT WE ARE AT
OUR LAST SCHOOLS. >> IN TWO YEARS, IT WILL BE COMPLETE. I WAS JUST WONDERING IF THERE IS A ONLINE, WE DO A LOT OF VIRTUAL TRAININGS THAT ARE MUCH LESS EXPENSIVE. IS THA
AN OPTION? >> THEY ARE DOING SOME ONLINE.
BUT THIS IS REALLY ABOUT THE WORK AND COACHING AROUND TEAMS SUPPORTING BUILDINGS IN THE IMPLEMENTATION. SO THEY SUPPOR THE WORK THAT WE ARE ALREADY DOING ABOUT HAVING MEMBERSHIP IN CLASSROOMS FOR STUDENTS. AN THE SUPPORTS THAT THEY NEED TO
FIND SUCCESS. >> THANKS FOR EXPLAINING THAT.
RANGE OF BIDS. ONE OF THEM IS 80,000, THE OTHER IS UPWARDS O 700,000. WHAT IS GOING TO BE THE PRIMARY ATTRIBUTE OF THESE
COMPANIES THAT YOU LOOK FOR? >> SO FIRST AND FOREMOST , WE HAVE BEEN IN THIS WORK AND THE INITIAL WORK WAS PAID FOR THROUGH SOME GRANT MONEY BECAUS OUR LRE NUMBERS WEREN'T WHERE THEY SHOULD BE. WE HAVE MADE HUGE STRIDES. SO WE ARE JUST COMPLETING THE WORK. THE OTHER THING, WHEN YOU LOOK AT THOSE DOLLAR FIGURES NOT EVERYBODY BI ON THE SAME MATRIX. SO IT'S NO A STRAIGHT DOLLAR FIGURE. WE TOOK OUT OUTLIERS. IT'S REALL CLOSE TO A GREAT PRICE WHEN YO CONSIDER OURS AND THE WAY THEY DEFINE THE WORK. SOME OF THESE BIDS DIDN'T DEFINE THE WORK IN THE SAME WAY, EVEN THOUGH WE WERE RESPONDING TO QUESTIONS AN TRYING TO CREATE A SITUATION WHERE WE CAN COMPARE MORE.
>> ANYTHING ADDITIONAL? NO FURTHER NEED TO DISCUSSION. AL THOSE IN FAVOR? ANY OPPOSED? MOTION PASSES.

JOINING ME NEXT IS MR. GREGORY GOT , DIRECTOR OF SCHOOL FACILITIES FOR THE REQUEST FOR AWARDING SNOW AND ICE REMOVAL SERVICES . IN JANUARY , CALVER COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS ISSUED A BID TO PERFORM FULL SERVICE SNOW AND ICE REMOVAL FOR OUR HIGH SCHOOLS AND ANY ADJOINING MIDDLE SCHOOL LOCATIONS ON AN A NEEDED BASIS. SIX VENDORS SUBMITTED PROPOSALS. BASED ON THE REVIEW OF THE RESULTS, WE RESPECTFULLY REQUEST THE BOARD APPROVED THE CONTRACT FOR SNOW AND ICE REMOVAL TO MCKINSEY CONTRACTING. FUNDING WILL BE THROUGH THE GENERAL FUND. WE HAVE A MOTION AND SECOND ON THE FLOOR. FOR APPROVAL OF THIS

DIFFERENT FROM, CONTRARY TO OR OTHERWISE IN CONFLICT WITH AS SUCH SHALL BE SUBJECT TO REDUCTION. THE BID PROPOSAL SUBMITTED BY GENERAL CONTRACTING FAILS TO MEET THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE BID DOCUMEN THAT IS THEREFORE CONSIDERED NONRESPONSIVE. FURTHERMORE, PURSUANT TO 14.39 .0 3.0 7G , IN THE EVENT THAT ONE BID IS RECEIVED, THE CONTRACT MAY BE AWARDED TO THE SINGLE RESPONSIBLE BIDDER. WE REQUESTDISCUSSION. >> WHY WEREN'T ALTERNATE ONE, TWO AND FOUR INCLUDED ? WHAT ARE THE BIDS HIGHER AND WE DIDN'T HAVE THE FUNDS TO DO IT? THEY WERE PART OF THE PACKAGE
BUT WE DIDN'T CONTACT. >> BASED OFF OF WHAT WAS BUDGETED FOR SCHOOL CONSTRUCTION, THEY WOULD'VE BEEN OVERBUDGET. THEY AREN'T GOING TO GET THEIR NEW SYSTEMS.
>> THIS PROJECT WILL AFFECT ALL SCHOOLS.
>> FOR THE EXHAUST. THERE WERE SOME NEW UNITS IN THIS BID.
AND A SPLIT SYSTEM FOR SUNDERLAND. THAT WOULD'VE BEEN NICE TO HAVE. BUT WE COULDN'T AFFORD IT.
>> I CAN GET THOSE FOLLOW-UP ANSWERS.
>> MAYBE THEY WILL FIND DIFFERENT MONEY FOR THAT.
>> ARE YOU ABLE TO SHARE WHY ASN DID NOT MEET THE
REQUIREMENT? >> WE DID AN ADDENDUM NUMBER TWO. WHICH CHANGED THE PROPOSA FORM AND THE VENDORS WHO WERE SUBMITTING BIDS HAD TO FILL IT OUT. ASN FILLED OUT THE OLD FORM. THEY ACKNOWLEDGED ADDENDUM NUMBER TWO, BUT THEN
THEY USED THE ORIGINAL FORM. >> CONSIDERING THE DIFFERENCES IN THE TWO PROPOSALS, WHY WAS THERE NO CONSIDERATION FOR PUTTING THE PROJECT BACK OUT T BETA?
>> THIS PROJECT HAS TO TAKE PLACE IN THE SUMMER OF 23 AND THERE IS NO TIME TO BID. THEY MUST BE INSTALLED NEXT SUMMER AND THE ROOFTOP UNITS HAVE A LEAD TIME DELIVERY OF THE YEAR.
. DID SHE PROVIDE WHAT OTHER PROJECTS MIGHT HAVE TO BE MOVED AS A RESULT OF THIS BEING OVER THE BUDGETED ALLOTMENT?

MONITOR STUDENT PROGRESS AND USE DATA TO MAKE DECISIONS. I WILL NOW TURN IT OVER TO DISCUSS WHAT WE ARE DOING WITH SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING AND BEHAVIOR
INTEGRATIONS. >> GOOD EVENING. I WILL TALK LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE SEL CURRICULUM AND OTHER OPPORTUNITIES HAPPENING. AT TH ELEMENTARY LEVEL , WE ARE USING SECOND STEP AS THE PRESCRIBED LESSONS. THAT IS HAPPENING BY THE CLASSROOM TEACHERS. WE ARE USING HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION CURRICULUM AND SCHOOL COUNSELORS ARE PROVIDING LESSONS IN THE CLASSROOM AT A MINIMUM OF ONE LESSON PER MONT IN EACH CLASSROOM. AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL LEVEL, ALL MIDDL SCHOOLS ARE USING CHARACTER STRONG , THERE ARE ALSO HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION CURRICULUMS THAT ARE BEING TAUGHT TO STUDENTS IN EACH GRAD LEVEL. AND AT THE HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL, THEY ARE USING STUDENT LED ADVISORY AND CLUBS, HEALTH CLASS, PHYSICAL EDUCATION CURRICULUM. THAT DOES VERY FROM HIGH SCHOOL TO HIGH SCHOOL IN TERMS OF WHAT EACH IS

OUR CURRICULUM. HAS TO DO WITH PERSONAL SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY.IN THAT STANDARD, YOU SEE A VARIETY OF WAYS THAT WE CAN GE STUDENTS TO ENGAGE WITH SOCIA EMOTIONAL LEARNING. WHEN WE TEACH THIS IT IS VERY EXPLICIT WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO COOPERATE WITH OTHERS? HOW DO WE HAVE SAFETY AROUND OUR AWARENESS? ALL THE WAY UP TO HIGH SCHOOL, WAS WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE SAFE IN A WEIGHT ROOM? HAVING STUDENTS BE ABLE TO PROVIDE FEEDBACK BUT ALSO ACCEPT FEEDBACK FROM OTHERS . HAVING A SENSE OF ACCEPTANCE KNOWING THA IN THE PHYSICAL EDUCATIO STUDE DIFFERENT PEERS WHO ARE DIFFERENT FROM THEM, DEVELOPING TEAMWORK , HOW DO WE WORK TOGETHER, HOW DO WE DEFINE SUCCESS, WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO B RESPECTFUL TO PEERS, TEACHERS EQUIPMENT AND THAT OUR ENVIRONMENT? AND THEN WHAT IS PROPER ETIQUETTE? IN THE HEALT EDUCATION CURRICULUM, YOU SEE THE SEVEN SKILLS WE DEVELOPED. HEALTH CONTENT , THEN THE SEVEN SKILLS UNDERNEATH. WE ARE HELPING STUDENTS DEVELOP THEIR SKILLS BASED OFF OF ANALYZING INFLUENCES, BEING ABLE TO ACCESS RELIABLE RESOURCES, COMMUNICATING THROUGH CONFLICT, BUT ALSO COMMUNICATING VALUES, BOUNDARIES AND POLICE. HOW DO WE SET AND ACHIEVE GOALS? WHAT TYPES OF HABITS DO WE NEED TO CREATE? AND HOW DO I ADVOCATE FOR SAFE RESPECTFUL SPACE FOR OTHERS? YOU CAN SEE THE CONNECTIONS TAKING PLACE. THIS
IS HOW IT RELATES TO SEL. >> WE ARE STILL CONTINUING TO PROVIDE RESTORATIVE PRACTICES TRAINING. ALL STAFF HAS BEEN PROVIDED WITH THAT. ADDITIONAL TRAINING WILL BE OFFERED IN JUNE. NEW HIRES WILL BE ABLE T SIGN UP FOR TRAINING IN AUGUST.
SCHOOLS ARE UTILIZING CIRCLES AND SOME HAVE STARTED HAVING CONFERENCES WITH STUDENTS TO ADDRESS CONFLICT. MEETINGS ARE HELD QUARTERLY TO DISCUSS UPDATES AND SHARE ANY INFORMATION . AND WE HAVE KINDNESS CLUBS TO ADDRESS BULLYING CONCERNS , ANTI-BULLYING FUNDS HAVE BEEN GIVEN TO SCHOOLS AND THEY ARE UTILIZED FOR DIFFERENT KINDNESS ACTIVITIES WITHIN THE SCHOOL. >> WE APPLIED FOR FEDERAL GRANTS. WE HAVE OFFERED YOGA
[02:20:04]
AND TRAINING FOR CLASSROOM TEACHERS , MATT YOGA CLASS AND IT'S ALL OUR PE TEACHER GETTING SOME MOR EXPERTISE ON HOW TO TEACH YOGA WE HAD SUCH WORK IS HOW TO TEAC THE TRAUMA INFORMED CLASS AND CLASSROOM TEACHERS LEARN HOW T DO CHAIR YOGA IN THE CLASSROOM SPACES. IN SEPTEMBER WE DID A MENTAL HEALTH AND ACTION WORKSHOP WHICH WAS VERY WELL ATTENDED BY PE TEACHERS AND SOCIAL WORKERS, SCHOOL COUNSELORS, AND WE EVEN HAD ADMINISTRATORS AND SUPERVISORS.IT WAS AWESOME TO HAVE THEM ATTEND THE MID-12 AN ACTION WORKSHOP. WE TEACH PEOPLE HOW TO USE MINDFULNESS STRATEGIES T HELP KIDS REGULATE DIFFICULT EMOTIONS AND LEARN HOW TO CALM DOWN AFTER COMING INSIDE FROM RECESS. ALSO LEARN HOW TO MANAGE BEFORE A BENCHMARK OR A TEST. IT WAS VERY POWERFUL. WE ALSO HAVE , WHICH IS BEEN REALL GREAT AND REALLY GREAT RESOURCE FOR OUR TEACHERS. WHERE WE ARE SEEING IT BEING USED IS A WELLNESS COORDINATOR MAY USE IT BEFORE A STAFF MEETING AND IF IT IS A LONG DAY LET'S TAKE THREE MINUTES AS A GROUP. WE HAVE CLASSROOM TEACHERS USING IT IN THEIR CLASSROOM SPACES FOR THE STUDEN BECAUSE IT IS VERY WELL VERSED WITH RESOURCES FOR ALL STUDENTS. THEN WE HAVE TEACHER WHO ARE USING IT TO HELP LEAD BETTER WHICH I THINK IS ONE OF THE BEST THINGS BECAUSE WE ARE HELPING THEM BE ABLE TO TURN OFF THE BRAIN WHICH CAN BE VERY CHALLENGING AS AN EDUCATOR. THE PHYSICAL ACTIVITY CLUB WE HAD THE YOGA CLUBS HAPPEN AT SOME O THE SCHOOLS FROM PEOPLE WHO ARE TRAINED IN YOGA, AND WE ARE STARTING THE CLUBS IN OUR SCHOOL. THE FIRST MEETING EARLIER THIS WEEK, AND THOSE AR SOME REALLY EXCITING THINGS THA ARE HAPPENING. I KNOW DOCTOR MOORE'S TALKED ABOUT THE MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS , AND WE ARE ALSO HOSTING AT EACH OF THE SCHOOLS MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH ACTIVITIES THAT THE SCHOOLS ARE OFFERED MONEY TO HELP COORDINATE IN EACH SCHOOL AND TAKING THE FUNDS AND UTILIZING THEM IN A DIFFERENT WAY TO HELP SUPPORT THE SPECIFI NEED WITHIN THAT SCHOOL. IT IS ALSO THAT WE WILL HAVE THIS BIG KICKOFF EVENT ON MAY 2 TO SPEARHEAD INTO THESE ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES THAT WILL BE HAPPENING AT EACH OF THE SCHOOLS. JUST TO HIGHLIGHT SOM OF THE THINGS THAT ARE BRAND-NE THAT HAVE HAPPENED IN THE 2022-2023 SCHOOL YEAR, WE DO HAVE BELT WELLNESS CORNERS AND ALL BUILDINGS AND EACH COORDINATOR IS MAKING IT THEIR OWN WHICH IS EXCITING TO SEE. DEVELOPING STRATEGIES TO HELP SUPPORT STAFF AND STUDENTS AND FAMILIES AND COMMUNITIES. WE HAVE RUN HIGH SCHOOL HEALTH FAIRS AT EACH OF THE HIGH SCHOOLS AND AT THE CP. THIS IS A MASSIVE PARTNERSHIP WITH THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT AND THE HOSPITAL AND OTHER COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS , AND BEHAVIORAL HEALTH SERVICES. THESE HELPERS HAVE BEEN FANTASTIC FOR OUR STUDENTS TO ENGAGE CONVERSATIONS WITH HEALTH PROFESSIONALS. WE'VE HAD DOCTORS THERE AND MENTAL HEALTH COORDINATORS THERE. WE'VE HAD PEOPLE WHO HELP WITH SMOKING PROGRAMS AND STUDENTS ARE MAKIN CONNECTIONS WITH PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY THAT THEY CAN HELP SUPPORT THEIR HEALTH. IN THE FALL WE HAD ONE AT HUBBARD AND ONE AT NORTHERN. IN THE SPRING WE HAD OUR HUNTINGTON HIGH SCHOOL ONE. THEN THE PTE WAS SOMEWHERE IN THE WENT TO MONTH.
HIGH SCHOOL LUNCH AND LEARNS. THEY ARE ALSO HAVE ENDING MONTHLY. WE HAVE PEOPLE FROM THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT COMING INTO EACH OF OUR ARTICLES AT LUNCH SETTING UP TABLES DURING OUR LUNCH TIME, AND HAVING CONVERSATIONS AND MAKING CONNECTIONS. AT EACH LUNCH AND LEARN WE'VE HAD PEOPLE FROM THE NICOTINE AND VAPING BECAUSE W KNOW THAT IS A PROBLEM IN OUR SCHOOLS. GIVEN THAT CONNECTION TO HELP WITH THE SMOKING CESSATION , AND STRESS HITS THA STUDENTS WERE ABLE TO CREATE, MENTAL HEALTH COORDINATORS MAKING THAT CONNECTION. THE
[02:25:01]
HEALTH DEPARTMENT EDUCATION COMMUNITY OUTREACH HAS ATTENDE SPORTING EVENTS LIKE BASKETBALL AND FOOTBALL GAMES, AND LACROSSE AND BASEBALL, AND YOU MIGHT SEE PEOPLE WHO HAVE SET U TABLES. WE ARE PROVIDING THE HEALTH PROFESSIONALS TO COME IN AND HAVE CONVERSATIONS WITH TEENAGERS AND FAMILIES ABOUT TH DIFFERENT OPTIONS WE HAVE WITHI OUR COMMUNITY TO HELP SUPPORT OUR HEALTH. ALSO THINK WHAT WA REALLY FANTASTIC IS AT OUR SUMMER LEADERSHIP, AND AT OUR NEW TEACHER ORIENTATION WE SET UP A FAIR SO THAT ADMINISTRATORS HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE CONNECTION WITH PEOPLE IN OUR COMMUNITY THAT CAN HELP SUPPORT THEIR BUILDINGS AND THINK ABOUT PEOPLE FROM OUT OF STATE LIKE HOW DO I FIND A DOCTOR HERE? WHAT IS A GREAT DENTIST, AND MAKING THOSE CONNECTIONS. THE NINE-HOLE DISC GOLF COURSE ARE IN AND THAT IS REALLY FANTASTI THING. WHAT WE ARE ENCOURAGING PEOPLE TO DO IS GET OUTSIDE AND MOVE YOUR BODY AND ENGAGE WITH OTHERS AND BUILD THAT COMMUNITY ALL OF OUR SECONDARY SCHOOLS HAVE AT LEAST A NINE-HOLE DISC GOLF COURSE . YOU CAN DO A NICE ROUND OF DISC GOLF OUTSIDE. AT THE COUNTRY SCHOOL ACROSS A WAY THAT IS GREAT WHEN IF YOU HAVE YOUNG KIDS BECAUSE THEY ARE SET UP TO BE MORE PUTTING . THAT WOULD BE A GREAT WAY TO INTRODUCE FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE YOUNGER KIDS. WE ARE ENCOURAGING THIS FULL COMMUNITY WELLNESS COMPONENT AND HAVING PRIDE IN OUR BUILDING'S. THE OUTDOOR MINDFULNESS SPACE AT TH ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS ARE BEING A LIMITED -- BROUGHT IN NOW. WE HAVE OUTDOOR LEARNING SPACES AND YOU MIGHT SEE NEW PAINTED AREAS . WE ARE CALLING THEM MINDFULNESS PLAYGROUNDS THAT AR ENCOURAGING KIDS TO STOP AND NAME FIVE THINGS THAT YOU SEE O THINK THAT YOU SMELL, OR THREE THINGS THAT YOU CAN TOUCH. REALLY TEACHING THEM THAT MINDFULNESS PEACE. THE LAST THING THAT WE HAVE ADDED THIS YEAR IS WE HAVE ADDED A TOBACC ROAD SHOW AT THE SEVENTH-GRADE LEVEL FOR LONG TIME. THE NEWEST ADDITION IS WE'RE HAVING EDUCATION AT ALL OF THE HIGH SCHOOLS AROUND VAPING , AND HO IT IMPACTS THE DEVELOPING BRAIN. WE'VE HAD THAT ALL FOUR HIGH SCHOOLS DURING THE FALL SEMESTER, AND WE ARE ACTUALLY IN IT RIGHT NOW. SHE IS GOING TO HUNTINGTON TOMORROW.WELLNESS CHALLENGES HAVE BEEN MASSIVE. WE INITIALLY STARTED THIS LAST YEAR WHERE WE DEVELOPED AND ARE WORKING WITH AN ORGANIZATION TO DEVELOP WHERE WE ARE OFFERING WELLNESS CHALLENGES THROUGHOUT OUR ENTIRE SYSTEM. THIS YEAR WAS THE FIRST YEAR THAT WE OPENED I UP FOR EVERYONE. WE'LL BE NOT JUST FOR OUR STAFF AND STUDENT BUT FOR FAMILIES AND COMMUNITIES. WE STARTED IN SEPTEMBER WITH A FOCUS ON MENTA HEALTH. WE HAD ABOUT 250 PEOPL ENROLLED. IN OUR LAST ONE WHIC WAS IN MARCH AND APRIL, WE HAD OVER 700 PEOPLE INVOLVED IN TH CHALLENGES WITH THE SLEEP AND MINDFULNESS. IF YOU GO TO THE NEXT SLIDE, IT IS NOT ABOUT ANY TYPE OF WEIGHT LOSS. IT IS ABOUT BUILDING BETTER HABITS AND WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE. WITH EACH CHALLENGE COMES WITH A RESOURCE CALENDAR THAT IS BUILT AND IT IS DEVELOPMENTALLY APPROPRIATE FOR ALL AGES. IF TH FAMILY DECIDE TO PARTICIPATE A SECOND GRADER CAN WATCH A VIDEO WITH THEIR PARENT, AND IT IS PROVIDING THAT EDUCATIONAL PIEC OR ABOUT THIS ONE IN PARTICULAR THE MARCH AND APRIL, HOW DO WE BUILD BETTER SLEEP HABITS? HOW IS TECHNOLOGY IMPACTING OUR SLEEP HABITS? THE RESOURCE COUNTERS HAVE BEEN FANTASTIC FO HELPING BRIDGE AS TO WHY SLEEP IS IMPORTANT TO US. THE LAST ON IS WE ARE MAY 1 STARTING OUR FINAL CHALLENGE FOR THE YEAR.
WE'VE HAD 700 AND ARE HOPING TO GET MORE. THE QR CODE IS THERE BECAUSE YOU CAN REGISTER NOW, REGISTER TODAY. IT STARTS MAY 1 ONCE YOU GO IN AND REGISTER WITH AN EMAIL YOU ARE INVITED T JOIN THE OUTDOOR PHYSICAL CHALLENGE, BUT CONSIDER ANOTHE ASPECT OF YOUR LIFE THAT YOU MIGHT WANT TO HAVE SUPPORT FOR HABIT SO YOU CAN TRACK YOUR STEPS. YOU CAN TRACK RUNNING MILES AND CYCLING MILES AND HYDRATION LIKE HOW MUCH WATER YOU ARE CONSUMING . ALSO YOUR NUMBER OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
[02:30:06]
MINUTES OUTSIDE. THE NUMBER OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY MINUTES THATYOU DO OUTSIDE. >> CALVERT COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS WILL CONTINUE PROVIDE A NURTURING AND SAFE ENVIRONMENT WHERE SOCIAL EMOTIONAL BEHAVIORAL LEARNING WILL OCCUR BY CONTINUE TO IMPROVISE SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING FOR OUR STUDENTS AND BY CREATING INCLUSIVE AND AQUA LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS FOR ALL STUDENTS. IN ADDITION WE WILL CONTINUE T BUILD AND NURTURE THE WELLNESS AND MORALE AMONG STAFF BY HAVIN WELLNESS COORDINATORS IN SCHOOL THROUGH DIVERSE ACTIVITIES LIKE THE WELLNESS CHALLENGES NOTED I THIS PRESENTATION. THANK YOU.
>> QUESTIONS? >> I HAVE A COUPLE QUESTIONS.
WHO PROVIDES THE RESTORATIVE PRACTICES TRAINING ?
>> WE HAVE TRAINERS IN OUR SCHOOL. THEY HAVE BEEN TRAINED BY THE INSTRUMENT -- INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR
RESTORATIVE PRACTICES. >> IS THAT MANDATOY FOR EVERY STAFF PERSON? DO WE EVER DO AN EVALUATION TO DETERMINE THAT THE TRAINING THAT WE ARE DOING IS EFFECTIVE OR DO THE TEACHERS UNDERSTAND OR COMPREHEND OR KNO HOW TO USE IT?
>> WE ARE DOING A FIDELITY CHECK WITH IT TO MAKE SURE THAT IS BEING DONE AS IT SHOULD BE. I MEET WITH THE TRAINERS QUARTERLY, AND I HAVE A FIDELITY CHECK THAT I HAVE DEVELOPED, AND I ASKED HIM QUESTIONS LIKE IF THE LANGUAGE IS BEING USED THAT YOU HAVE LEARNED IN TRAINING , AND ARE THE CIRCLES BEING USED IN YOUR SCHOOL ? ARE THE CONFERENCE IS BEING USED ? AT THE ABOUT THE DIFFERENT COMPONENT PARTS AND
HOW IT IS BEING USED. >> ONE OF THE THINGS THAT I WA THINKING WAS MISSING BUT IT WA MENTIONED AT THE END, AND SPECIFICALLY WHEN IT COMES TO THD IN THE BRAIN. I WAS HAPPY TO SEE THERE WAS SOME DISCUSSIO ABOUT THAT. IS THEIR PLAN AT SOME POINT TO EXPAND THOSE DISCUSSIONS BEYOND VAPING AND NICOTINE AND THC ? WE DO WELL MUCH SNOW THERE IS MORE THAN JUST THC IN OUR CLASSROOMS OR SCHOOL. IT WOULD BE AWESOME I WE COULD PUT A GREATER EMPHASIS ON THE IMPORTANCE OF NOT TO DO DRUGS OF ANY SORT. THERE ALSO IS A REALLY BIG CONNECTION BETWEEN MENTAL HEALTH AND DRUG ABUSE OR DRUG ADDICTION. IT WOULD BE NICE IF THERE WAS SOME ADDITIONAL COMPONENTS ADDED ABOUT THAT AS WELL. THANK YOU.
>> ANY ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS? ALL RIGHT. THANK YOU SO MUCH
[7.06 Valedictorian/Salutatorian Discussion]
FOR THE PRESENTATION. WE WILL NOW MOVE INTO THE VALEDICTORIAN AND SALUTATORIAN DISCUSSION. VICE PRESIDENT WHITE, DID YOU ADD THIS TO OUR AGENDA? I WILL LET YOU BEGINWITH A DISCUSSION. >> OKAY. WITH THE, LET ME
CLOSE THIS. >> I SEE HEADS NODDING .
>> HOW IS EVERYBODY DOING THIS EVENING? THE VALEDICTORIAN AND SALUTATORIAN DISCUSSION, WHEN I CAME ON BOARD AND SUPERINTENDEN OF CALVERT COUNTY IN JULY, I HAD THE PRIVILEGE OF GOING TO PRETTY MUCH EVERYTHING THAT THE COUNTY HAD TO OFFER YOUNG PEOPLE. I DID A SUMMER SCHOOL GRADUATION THAT WAS CONDUCTED I THIS OFFICE. IT LED ME TO LOOK INTO WHAT WOULD GRADUATES LOOK LIKE IN THE UPCOMING YEAR? I NOTICED THAT WE DID NOT ACKNOWLEDGE A VALEDICTORIAN OR SALUTATORIAN , WHICH WAS NEW T ME. IN MY PRACTICE I HAVE ALWAYS ACKNOWLEDGED A VALEDICTORIAN AND SALUTATORIAN IT DID EXIST PREVIOUSLY A NUMBER OF YEARS AGO, AND IT DID GO AWAY. I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY AS I MET WITH MAGGIE ABOUT IT, AND THE STUDENT GOVERNMENT
[02:35:06]
ADVISORY COUNCIL, AND HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO MEET WITH MY SECULAR PRINCIPLES, TO GET EVERYBODY'S THOUGHTS AND OPINIONS ON IT. THE ULTIMATE DECISION BASED OFF OF CHECKING IN WITH EVERYBODY, THE YOUNG PEOPLE WHO DID RANK OUR KIDS, AND DISTINGUISH GRADUATES, WE HAVE A RANKING SYSTEM. THE NUMBER 1 AND NUMBER TWO SHOULD BE RECOGNIZED. IF YOU ARE ALREADY RANKS THEN WHY NOT HAV THE TITLE? MY THOUGHT WAS TO IMPLEMENT THAT AS PART OF OUR ADMINISTRATED GUIDELINES AND PROCEDURES. THAT IS WHAT WE AR LOOKING TO DO THIS UPCOMING GRADUATION FOR EVERY STUDENT I THE CLASS. I'M LOOKING TO ACKNOWLEDGE THEM AS THE VALEDICTORIAN AND THE SALUTATORIAN. THE STARTED BACK IN SEPTEMBER OR OCTOBER, WHEN I MET WITH THE STUDENT GOVERNMEN ADVISORY COUNCIL. I MADE THE DECISION I BELIEVE IN DECEMBER WITH THE TEAM INTERNALLY. IT WAS NEWS AND A SURPRISE TO ME THAT THERE WAS A BILL BEING PROPOSED THAT THE STATE OFFICE OF MAKING ALL ALL FOR THIS.THIS WAS TOTALLY DISCONNECTED FROM THAT, BUT WE ALREADY AS A TEAM HAVE DECIDED THIS IS WHAT WE DO IN THE FUTURE.
>> MISTER WHITE. >> YES. I WASN'T 100% SURE ABOUT HOW IT TOOK PLACE. I HAV SEEN SEVERAL EMAILS ABOUT IT.
FOR LACK OF TIME I WILL NOT GO THROUGH THE ENTIRE EMAIL AND SHARE IT WITH YOU LATER. IS THERE DATA THAT SHOWS WHERE IN RANKING THE HIGHEST PLAY CTA PATHWAY FALLS ? THERE IS A COMPUTER SCIENCE COMPLETER. TWO OF THE THREE PATHWAYS THAT COURTS ARE CONSIDERED A KEY AN THE HAVE THOSE AT THE CTA. I BELIEVE WHEN YOU RUN THE REPORT YOU WILL FIND THAT THE CTA PATHWAY FOR STUDENTS ARE NOT ABLE TO ACHIEVE SOME OF THOSE SAME VALEDICTORIAN OR SALUTATORIAN. WAS LIFETIME OF SCHOOLS VALEDICTORIAN OR CPA COMPLETED, OR IS THERE EVER BEE A VALEDICTORIAN OR SALUTATORIAN THAT CAME THROUGH THE CTE PROGRAM? THE COLLEGES CARE MORE ABOUT CLASS RANK. WHEN OUR CTE STUDENTS FALL DOWN IN THE RANKINGS SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY ARE TAKING OR NOT TAKING WEIGHTED CLASSES, WE ARE PUTTIN THEM AT AN AUTOMATIC DISADVANTAGE FOR CHOOSING TO TAKE ADULT LEVEL CLASSWORK WHIL IN HIGH SCHOOL. THE LAST ONE I I BELIEVE WE ARE THE ONLY DISTRICT THAT DOES NOT RECOGNIZ IT ANYWAY DUAL ENROLLMENT OR CTE COURSES, WITH ADDITIONALLY WAITING. WHAT ABOUT THE DISADVANTAGE OF THE CTE STUDENT IN THAT RESPECT COMPARED TO THEIR PEERS IN NEIGHBORING COUNTIES? AT A MINIMUM I ASKED THAT WE TO CONSIDER, NOT ME, BUT I ASKED THAT WE CONSIDER CHANGING OUR CURRENT PROCESS OR SYSTEM UNTIL WE CORRECT THERE INEQUITIES THAT EXIST IN OPPORTUNITIES TO ACCESS THE TITLES TO OUR OUTDATED
WEIGHTING SYSTEM. >> I'M HAPPY TO LOOK OVER THAT WITH THE TEAM. AUDIBLY THE VALEDICTORIAN AND SALUTATORIAN WAS TAKEN AWAY FOR CAREER TECHNICAL EDUCATION PURPOSES. I WAS SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT FROM THAT. I THINK MATHEMATICALLY OUR YOUNG PEOPL ARE NOT FIRST AND SECOND THE CLASS BECAUSE OF THE WEIGHTING OF THE CLASS. I WOULD LIKE TO EXPLORE HOW WE CAN ENSURE EQUIT AMONG ALL PEOPLE. ACKNOWLEDGIN A VALEDICTORIAN OR SALUTATORIAN IS NO WAY TO DISPARAGE ANY STUDENT AS WE ALREADY RANKING OUR STUDENTS. I LIKE THE TITLE TO GO WITH THAT THE SCHOLARSHIP COME WITH THAT. TITLES IN OUR SOCIETY TO MEAN SOMETHING. BUT I'M HAPPY TO EXPLORE THE CONCERNS OF THAT INDIVIDUAL. THAT IS TO ENSURE THAT THEY
HAVE AN ADVANTAGE AS WELL. >> YOU GO AHEAD.
>> THANK YOU. I ALSO MET WITH THE ASSOCIATION THIS MONDAY TO
[02:40:01]
DISCUSS THE SAME ISSUE. I DO AGREE A LOT OF WHAT I WAS HEARING WAS THAT RECOGNITION FOR THE SALAD VICTORIAN AND VALEDICTORIAN IS POPULAR AND PEOPLE WANT TO KEEP THAT. LIKE MISTER WHITE WAS SAYING THE REAL ISSUE THAT STUDENTS HAVE WITH THIS IS THE STRUCTURE OF CLASS RANK AND HOW THE WEIGHTING OF DIFFERENT CLASSES WORK AND IT CAN PUT STUDENTS A A DISADVANTAGE. ALSO WHAT I'M HEARING IS IT CREATES SOMEWHAT OF AN UNHEALTHY COMPETITION FOR STUDENTS TO BE DRIVEN TO TAKE MORE FOR THE SAKE OF THEI RANK, RATHER THAN WHAT THEY AR INTERESTED IN AND WHAT THEY WANT TO CONTINUE PURSUING WITH THEIR EDUCATION. IT CREATES SOMEWHAT OF A CULTURE THAT ENCOURAGES STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT IN THE ADVANCED PLACEMENT CLASSES RATHER THAN WHAT THEY TRULY WANT TO DO. I DISCARD A LOT OF CONCERN WITH THAT NOT ONLY FROM THE CALVERT ASSOCIATION OF STUDENT COUNCIL, BUT THE STUDENT POPULATION IN GENERAL. OVERALL I DO AGREE THAT SALAD VICTORIAN AND VALEDICTORIAN SHOULD BE RECOGNIZED. BUT I THINK THE ISSUE THAT SHOULD BE ADDRESSED IS HOW OUR CLASS RANK SYSTEM IS STRUCTURED AS FAR AS THE WEIGHT OF THE CLASS.>> REMEMBER WHEN I FIRST GOT O THE BOARD WE HAD THE FOUR PRINCIPLES COME TO US AND SAY IT HAS GOT TO BE SUCH A HIGH STRESS THING FOR OUR STUDENTS WORK ONLY TO TWO PEOPLE WILL BE CHOSEN OUT OF AN ENTIRE POPULATION. THE DIFFERENCES WIL SOMETIMES .0002. IT CAUSE IT STRIKE BECAUSE WE HAD SO MANY WONDERFUL STUDENTS. THEY SAID LET'S MAKE IT FIVE. WE DID ACADEMIC RECOGNITION OF FIVE STUDENTS. THEY SAID IT WAS ON THE VALEDICTORIAN THAT DID THE SPEAKING, BUT DETERMINED BY THE COMMITTEE OF FIVE, AND FROM WHAT I HEAR THAT RECOGNIZING THE SAME FIVE IS STILL IN PLACE. THE FACT THAT IT IS NOT NECESSARILY GOING TO BE THE AUDITORIUM THAT SPEAKS, BUT TH CHOICE OF THE GROUP, IS THAT STILL IN PLAY?
>> YES MA'AM. WE DID NOT CHANGE ANY OF THAT. BECAUSE THERE IS A RANKING ONE INTO THE SPECK ON -- ONE AND TWO.
>> SO NOW THAT WOULD JUST BE A TITLEIST OF NUMBER?
>> I WANT TO THANK YOU DOCTOR FOR ATTEMPTING TO BRING IT BACK I THINK THE CALVERT COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS SHOULD ACKNOWLEDGE ACADEMIC SUCCESS, AND STUDENTS DESERVE THE COLLEGE AWARDS AND SCHOLARSHIPS THAT COME WITH IT. SO THANK YOU SENTIMENTS. I THINK IT IS AMAZING AND A PROPER WAY TO ACKNOWLEDGE KIDS THAT HAVE GONE ABOVE AND BEYOND AND WORKED VER HARD. ALSO THINK THAT A LITTLE COMPETITION CAN BE HEALTHY.
WHEN WE TALK ABOUT ALL THINGS AND HELPING CHILDREN BECOME COLLEGE OR CAREER READY, THIS I PART OF THAT. NOT EVERYONE GET THE SAME EXACT THING. IF I HAV TO HAVE KNEE SURGERY, I WANT TO HAVE THE ONE THAT WORKED HAR AND WENT TO MEDALS COOL! MEDICA SCHOOL AND WORKED REALLY HARD TO OPERATE. NOT JUST WANT TO DID OKAY IN SCHOOL WASN'T FOR THEM. BUT THEY GOT A DEGREE ANYWAY. I THINK IT IS IMPORTAN TO CHALLENGE OUR YOUNG PEOPLE.
THINK IN MANY CASES THE VERY TO KID MAY BE OVERLOOKED BECAUSE THERE IS FEWER OF THEM AND MORE THAT ALL THE REST OF THEM. I THINK THIS IS AN AWESOME WAY TO ACKNOWLEDGE THOSE KIDS AND WHAT THEY HAVE WORKED FOR. SO THANK YOU FOR THAT.
>> LASTLY I WILL SAY I WILL ALLOW YOU TO HAVE YOUR
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS. GO AHEAD. >> I WANTED TO SHARE THAT ALSO WE CAME TO A SIMILAR CONSENSUS ABOUT RECOGNIZING THE TOP FIVE, BECAUSE AT THE END OF THE DAY THE STUDENTS AT THE TOP OF THE CLASS CAN, THE TOP FIVE RANKS CAN BE DIFFERENTIATED BY A SINGLE TEST SCORE. CONTINUING MAYBE AT GRADUATION HAVING THE TOP FIVE STUDENTS RECOGNIZE, NOT NECESSARILY WITH THE TITLE BUT RECOGNITION AT GRADUATION IS IMPORTANT. ALSO THE PROCESS THAT WE DO NOW OF HAVING THE SPEAKER AT GRADUATION BE
[02:45:01]
SELECTED NOT FOR JUST THE TOP FIVE BUT FROM THE DISTINGISHED GRADUATES GROUP AS A WHOLE, AN IT IS ALL STUDENTS UNWEIGHTED AND ABOVE THE PRACTICE IS VERY POPULAR AMONG OUR STUDENTS. IT IS NOT NECESSARILY PUTTING ONE OF OUR TOP FIVE STUDENTS WHO MAY NOT LOVE PUBLIC SPEAKING, AND ALL THE OTHER STUDENTS ARE INCREDIBLY ACCOMPLISHED, AND THEY MIGHT BE MORE INCLINED TOGIVE A BETTER SPEECH. >> LASTLY I WILL MENTIONED THAT I HAD A CONVERSATION WITH YOU ABOUT THIS ISSUE. THE ISSUE FO ME IS EQUITY. WE CANNOT CONTINUE TO HAVE EQUITY AS NUMBER 1 IN OUR STRATEGIC PLAN AND MAKE DECISIONS THAT ARE INEQUITABLE FOR OUR STUDENTS, OUR STAFF, AND I THINK WHEN WE DO THAT IT SENDS A RESOUNDING MESSAGE. WE CLEARLY HAVE STUDENTS AT CTA WHO WILL NEVER HAVE EQUAL ACCESS OR EQUAL OPPORTUNITY TO EARN A RANK OF 1 OR 2. THAT IS IMPORTANT TO B TO ENSURING THAT EVERY CHILD HAS EQUAL ACCESS AND EQUAL OPPORTUNITY. I WOULD SAY TO OU STUDENTS CONTINUE TO STRIVE TO BE NUMBER 1 OR NUMBER 2. IT I A COMPETITION AND YOU ARE FREE TO PUT ON YOUR RESUME THAT YOU ARE ONE OUT OF 330 STUDENTS, AND EVERY COLLEGE IN THE UNITE STATES WILL RECOGNIZE THAT YOU WANT VALEDICTORIAN OR SALUTATORIAN OF YOUR SCHOOL.
THAT IS A STANDARD ACROSS THE UNITED STATES. I DON'T THINK THAT WE NEED TO ADD A TITLE. I THINK ADDING A TITLE IN THIS SITUATION WILL DISCOURAGE SOME OTHERS. I WOULD JUST LIKE TO ASKED DOCTOR THAT YOU THINK HARD AND RECONSIDERED THE DECISION THAT YOU HAVE MADE. I IS PART OF OUR PROCESS AND PROCEDURE , SO IT IS YOUR DECISION TO MAKE, AND THE BOARD, WE CAN SUGGEST AND SHAR OUR OPINION BUT ULTIMATELY IT IS YOUR DECISION. I WOULD LIKE FOR YOU TO SIT BACK AND THINK ABOUT AS A WHOLE AND CONSIDER OUR REMARKS FROM OUR STUDENTS, AND MAKE THE BEST DECISION THAT YOU FEEL SHOULD BE MADE CONSIDERING ALL COMMENTS AND CONSIDERATIONS. ANYTHING
[8.01 Comments by the Board]
FURTHER? HEARING NOTHING WE WILL MOVE INTO BOARD COMMENTS AND I WILL START WITH OUR STUDENT MEMBER. PLEASE MAKE YOUR BOARD COMMENTS. I DO RECOGNIZE WE HAVE AN EVENT TO ATTEND. THAT EVENT WILL NOT B FIVE MINUTES AND I'M SURE WE WILL BE RECOGNIZED WHEN WE ARRIVED THERE. FEEL FREE TOCOMPLETE YOUR BOARD COMMENT. >> ALL THAT I HAD I WANTED TO QUICKLY RECOGNIZE THE NORTHERN HIGH SCHOOL GOVERNMENT FOR BEING RECOGNIZED AT THE NATIONA GOOD GOAL COUNCIL OF EXCELLENC FOR THE SECOND YEAR IN A ROW. THE FIRST TO THE GOVERNMENT IN THE CITY OF MARYLAND TO DO THE RECOGNIZING. THINK THAT IS ALL
>> I JUST WANT AGAIN TO CONGRATULATE THE CALVERT COUNTY SCHOOL FOUNDATION WINNERS AND THE HUNTINGTON TOWN EYE OF THE STORM MEMBERS. THE C.J. SMITH THAT WE RECOGNIZE TODAY, AND I ENCOURAGE EVERYBODY TO GO TO TH PLAY CHICAGO. IT IS AWESOME.
>> THANK YOU. MISS POST . >> I HAVE FOUR PAGES PLANNED BU
I NOT READ IT . >> I WILL ASK YOU TO CUT THAT
SHORT. I AM ONLY KIDDING. >> I HAVE TO SAY THAT I REALLY DID APPRECIATE THE PRESENTATION REGARDING THE ELEMENTARY SCHOO AUDIT AND I THOUGHT THAT WAS AWESOME. THAT IS WITHOUT OBLIGATING THE SCHOOL SYSTEM. IT WILL BE REALLY AWESOME IF WE CAN DO IT FOR THE MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL AS WELL. I WOULD LOVE TO SEE AND HEAR SOME FEEDBACK FROM THAT. I THOUGHT THERE WAS A REALLY POSITIVE THINGS THAT CAME OUT, A LOT OF WHAT WE HEARD TODAY , AND WHAT IS WEIRD IS THAT WE HAVE A LOT OF WORK TO DO STILL. I DO ALSO WANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT ONE OF THE COMMENTS THAT THE AUDITOR MADE WAS THE RETURN ON THE INVESTMENT, AND CONTINUALLY LOOKING AT STRUCTURAL PROGRAMS AND INTERVENTION. I WILL BE REMISS IF I DID ALSO SAY THAT WE NEED TO LOOK AT THE INTERVENTIONS AND THE THINGS WE ARE DOING IN REGARDS TO BEHAVIOR IN OUR SCHOOL SYSTEM.
[02:50:05]
IT IS CONTINUING TO BE A CHALLENGE. IT DOESN'T SEEM TO B THAT, THERE IS BEEN BIG IMPROVEMENTS. I WOULD ENCOURAG EVERYONE, AND CERTAINLY AS A PRIORITY TO CONTINUE TO SEE WHERE WE CAN FIND THE RESOURCES . I SAID IT BEFORE AND I WILL SAY IT AGAIN THAT IF IT HAPPEN IT WILL BE A WHEN IT HAPPENS.WE DON'T EVER WANT TO BE IN THE POSITION. THANK YOU.
>> THANK YOU. >> I WANT TO SAY CONGRATULATION TO THOSE WHO GOT RECOGNIZE TODAY. ALSO I SPENT ONE OF THE MOST ENJOYABLE MORNINGS THAT I HAVE EVER HAD , AND I GO EVERY YEAR BUT THIS MORNING EVERYTHIN WORKED OUT BEAUTIFULLY WITH THE WEATHER. IT WAS A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF TEENAGERS THIS YEAR.
A LOT OF KIDS TOOK AN INTEREST AND HAVE BEEN WORKING HARD LOT ABOUT THE FOUR SEGMENTS , AND THAT IS THE SOIL, FORSTER, AQUATIC AND WILDLIFE . SOME REALLY CRACKED KIDS. I WAS PART OF THE GRADING TEAM, AND THAT' WHERE WE DO THE TRAINING FOR TH FOUR STREET, AND I WAS THERE TO HELP WITH THE GRADING. I WOULD LIKE TO CONGRATULATE THE THREE TEAMS WHO WON OVERALL , WHEN THE TOP SCORES, AND IN ALL FOUR SEGMENTS. THE TOP TEAMS I ONE OF THE NORTHERN HIGH SCHOOL TEAMS THAT WON AND WILL BE MOVING ON TO STATE. THEN THERE IS THE CALVERT HIGH SCHOOL THAT WON SECOND AND HUNTINGTON HIGH SCHOOL WON THIRD. THE TEXAS HIGH SCHOOL WAS THERE TOO AND JUST A LITTLE BELOW THEM.
CONGRATULATIONS TO EVERYBODY AS THE STUDENTS PERFORMED
>> I LIKE TO FIRST THANK DOCTOR JOHNSON AND THE SCHOOL COUNSELORS AND ATHLETIC DIRECTORS. BUT MOST IMPORTANTL THE 41 STUDENTS WHO ARE SHOWIN HOW MENTAL WELLNESS IS WHAT I MEANS TO THEM BY BEING PART OF PROJECT THAT WILL BE OPEN TO EVERYBODY ON MAY 3 AT THE COLLEGE OF SOUTHERN MARYLAND FROM 6:00 P.M. UNTIL 8:00 P.M. IT IS A WAY OF STUDENTS SHOWIN HOW THEY MAINTAIN AND GET BACK INTO THEIR MENTAL WELLNESS. IT IS ALSO EDUCATIONAL FOR US. A LOT OF THE STUDENTS, AS WE ARE WORRIED ABOUT BEING ANXIOUS AN DEPRESSED, BUT THE STUDENTS ARE NOT AFRAID TO SAY THAT I HAVE SOMETHING GOING ON AND I NEED HELP. IF YOU CAN MAKE IT TO TH COLLEGE OF SOUTHERN MARYLAND ON MAY 3 PLEASE COME DOWN AND SEE THIS PROJECT. A LOT OF ENERGY AND EFFORT WENT INTO IT. TEACHERS THERE ARE DOING AMAZING THINGS. I WAS ABLE TO TALK SOME OF THEIR STUDENTS AND PROJECT-BASED LEARNINGTHEY ARE WORKING ON. WHEN THEY COME IN THEY WILL BLOW YOUR MIND. THE STUDENTS ARE NOT AFRAID TO TELL YOU WHAT IS GOING ON AND ACTUALLY HAVE SOLUTIONS ON WHAT TO DO TO HELP THEM. LAST BUT NO LEAST WE HAVE FOUR FOOTBALL PLAYERS WHO HAVE BEEN SELECTED TO THE NATIONAL JR. TEAM.
THESE ARE FOUR STUDENTS OF HIGH SCHOOLS IN CALVERT COUNTY AND WILL BE CONTINUING ON THE NATIONAL LEVEL. WANT TO GIVE
THOSE GUYS A SHOUT OUT. >> THANK YOU. I HAVE NO COMMENT THIS EVENING. SEEING NOTHING FURTHER WE
