I WANT TO FIRST GIVE YOU AN OPPORTUNITY TO INTRODUCE YOURSELF AND TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF. INCLUDING YOUR BACKGROUND AND WHY IT IS YOU ARE IT INTERESTED
IN CALVERT COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS >> WOMAN: GOOD EVENING AND THANK YOU. THANK YOU FOR JOINING US EVERYONE THIS EVENING.
I WOULD BE HAPPY TO SHARE. I WANT TO BEGIN WITH THE FACT THAT I AM A WIFE, A MOM AND I'M THE PRODUCT. YOU HAVE TO CHILDREN. I HAVE A HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT AND A COLLEGE STUDENT. MY SON IS IN COLLEGE AND MY DAUGHTER IS IN HIGH SCHOOL.
MY LIFE AND LONG-STANDING CAREER UNDERSCORES A COMMITMENT TO PUBLIC EDUCATION WITH UNDENIABLE FOCUS ON PUTTING STUDENTS FIRST, PARTNERING WITH PARENTS AND FAMILIES AND AUTHENTICALLY ENGAGING WITH THE COMMUNITY MEMBERS SO I'M GRATEFUL FOR THIS OPPORTUNITY.
I ENJOY PARTNERING WITH LOCAL BUSINESSES AND REPRESENTATIVES FROM COLLEGES UNIVERSITIES, HE HE STAKEHOLDERS, PUBLIC ND ELECTED OFFICIALS. I HAVE A WIDE RANGE OF EXPERIENCE IRKING WITH GRADES PRESCHOOL THROUGH 12. MY CAREER IN EDUCATION BEGAN ABOUT 25 YEARS AGO AS A SUBSTITUTE TEACHER. MY FIRST FULL-TIME TEACHING STUDENT WAS AS AN ELEMENTARY TEACHER AND A TRANSITION TO ADMINISTERED OF ROLES INCLUDING ELEMENTARY, ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS AND ELEMENTARY PRINCIPAL.
I'VE SERVED AS AN ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT FOR A NETWORK OF 16 ELEMENTARY, MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOLS AND OVER THE PAST SIX YEARS I'VE SERVED IN EXECUTIVE LEADERSHIP AND ADMINISTRATION ROLES IN BALTIMORE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS WHICH IS THE THIRD LARGEST SCHOOL SYSTEM IN MARYLAND SERVING 10,000 STUDENTS AND HUNDRED AND 75 SCHOOLS.
I SUPPORT 20 TO MIDDLE TO HIGH SCHOOL'S LEADING ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE AND DIVERSE STUDENT POPULATIONS. AS THE SUPERINTENDENT HAVE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO OVERSEE 51 SCHOOLS THROUGHOUT MY CAREER AS AN INSTRUCTIONAL AND EDUCATIONAL LEADER AND KNOWN AS A CHAMPION OF CHILDREN AND AN ADVOCATE FOR STUDENTS AND I'M DEEPLY COMMITTED TO ENSURING EVERY STUDENT RECEIVES A HIGH-QUALITY EDUCATION AND HAVE BEEN AFFORDED THE OPPORTUNITY THROUGHOUT MY CAREER TO WORK ALONGSIDE SMART AND TALENTED EXECUTIVE STAFF BUT KNOW HOW TO DESIGN STRATEGIC PLANS THAT SUPPORT PRINCIPALS, TEACHERS AND SUPPORT STAFF IN RAISING ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT FOR STUDENTS AND GROUPS OF STUDENTS.
AS A VISIONARY LEADER AND TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADER I DO BELIEVE IT'S IMPORTANT TO ENSURE A CYCLE OF CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT FOR SCHOOLS, STUDENTS AND CONSISTENTLY MAKING PROGRESS BY SETTING AMBITIOUS GOALS COMPANY WITH A HIGH LEVEL OF SUPPORT.
MY CURRENT WORK IS DESIGNED TO LIMIT PROJECTS ONLINE FOR THE SCHOOL SYSTEM PLAN AND EQUITY WITH AN IMPACT AND BUILDING CAPACITY OF HUNDRED AND 75 SCHOOL-BASED ADMINISTRATORS.
[00:05:24]
JUST REALLY BRIEFLY. WHY THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS? ALTHOUGH IT MAY NOT APPEAR AT THE SURFACE, IN MY PREVIOUS AND CURRENT ROLES OF PROVIDED LEADERSHIP AND SUPPORT AS A SCHOOL INITIATOR AND STRATEGIC DIRECTION, OVERSIGHT AS AN EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AND COMMUNITY AND SENT SUPERINTENDENT. WITH STUDENT RAPHICS, ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AND HIGH QUALITY TEACHING AND LEARNING SIMILAR TO CALVERT COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS. I WORKED WITH SCHOOLS THAT HAVE HAD HIGH-PERFORMING RATES OF ACHIEVEMENT. LIKE CPS STUDENT STAFF AND STAKEHOLDERS I TAKE PRIDE IN CELEBRATING THE SUCCESS AND CONTRIBUTIONS OF SCHOOLS IN CENTRAL OFFICE STAFF TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE. I'VE SUPPORTED SCHOOLS THAT HAVE MADE THE BEST HIGH SCHOOLS IN MARYLAND, US NEWS AND WORLD REPORT LIST AND I'VE ALSO WORKED ITH SCHOOLS THAT HAVE BEEN HONORED TO HAVE THE 2021 MARYLAND STATE TEACHER OF THE YEAR AND COUNSELOR OF THE YEAR TEACHING AND SUPPORTING STUDENTS. THESE ARE JUST A FEW EXAMPLES.THE CURRENT WORK OF C CPS ALIGNED IN THE STRATEGIC PLAN WITH CLIMATE AND CULTURE WORKFORCE COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND EQUITY. IT REALLY RESONATES WITH ME AND WHO I AM AS A LEADER. I BELIEVE TOGETHER WE CAN CONTINUE TO SOAR AS A SCHOOL SYSTEM AND CACALVERT COUNTY SO THAT OUR STUDENTS EAVE THE COUNTY HAVING MAXIMIZE THEIR FULL POTENTIAL. THAT IS WHO I AM AND THAT IS WHY I HAVE SELECTED TO BE A CANDIDATE FOR THE SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS POSITION FOR CALVERT COUNTY.
HANK YOU. QUICK THANK YOU WE APPRECIATE THAT AND SAID INTO YOUR BACKGROUND AND PERSPECTIVE ON THE NEW ROLE. AS YOU GET STARTED THINKING ABOUT THE TRANSITION TO CALVERT COUNTY HOW WOULD YOU GO ABOUT ASSESSING THE ENGTH AND
CHALLENGES FACING THE SCHOOL DISTRICT? >> THAT IS A GOOD QUESTION I'VE BEEN THINKING A LOT ABOUT THAT. I DO BELIEVE IN STRENGTH-BASED ASSESSMENTS AND STRENGTH-BASED LEADERSHIP. IT'S IMPORTANT TO ME TO COME IN LISTENING AND LEARNING. I CAN COME INTO THE AREA AND TALK WITH FOLKS AND REALLY GET A BRIEF UNDERSTANDING OF THE AREA. I'M FULLY AWARE THAT THERE ARE SOME TALENTED TEACHERS THEY HAVE INVESTED COMMUNITY MEMBERS IN THE AREA SO I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO JUST LISTEN AND TAKE STOCK OF THE GREAT WORK THAT HAS OCCURRED TO DATE AND THEN REALLY THINK ABOUT WHERE THE OPPORTUNITIES ARE FOR US TO GROW TOGETHER BASED ON THE CURRENT LANDSCAPE OF EDUCATION THERE ARE OPPORTUNITIES TO GROW AND RECOVER FROM THE PANDEMIC BUT I WOULD NOT WANT TO MAKE ANY ASSUMPTIONS. IT'S VERY IMPORTANT TO ME TO COLLABORATE WITH MY CENTRAL OFFICE COLLEAGUES BUT THEN ALSO REALLY TO JUST THINK ABOUT HOW CAN WE BRING ABOUT CHANGE IN A WAY THAT IS MEANINGFUL FOR STUDENTS ABOUT JOLTING THE SYSTEM OF BRINGING ABOUT INCREMENTAL CHANGE. I WOULD BEGIN BY FOCUSING ON INTRODUCING MYSELF AND SHARING MY CORE VALUES WHICH ALIGNS WITH THE VISION AND MISSION OF THE SCHOOL SYSTEM. I PLAN TO LISTEN TO THE VOICES OF STUDENTS, STAFF AND INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL STAKEHOLDERS. I BELIEVE THAT EVERYONE INVOLVED IS A CONTRIBUTOR TO THE SUCCESS OF OUR STUDENTS. MEETING WITH BOARD MEMBERS, FAITH-BASED ORGANIZATIONS, THE COMMISSIONERS, EVERYONE IN THE COMMUNITY THAT CAN JUST ALLOW ME TO LISTEN AND TAKE HEAT OF WHAT NEEDS TO OCCUR. I WOULD ALSO LOOK AT THE DATA. I THINK LOOKING AT DATA AND ANALYZING IT TO HAVE CONVERSATIONS ABOUT WHAT IS EVEN NOT REVEALED IN THE DATA STORY WOULD HELP ME MAKE SOME ASSESSMENTS OF THE SCHOOL SYSTEM.
LAST BUT NOT LEAST I BELIEVE IT'S A COLLABORATIVE EFFORT. ALTHOUGH I AM A VERY HIGHLY EFFECTIVE LEADER WHO HAS STRONG EXPERIENCE AND BACKGROUND IN PUBLIC SCHOOL EDUCATION I DO NOT TAKE FOR GRANTED THOSE THAT I WORK WITH. I REALLY WANT TO WORK TOGETHER TO THINK ABOUT HOW I CAN LEARN THE CULTURE OF THE DISTRICT, CAPITALIZED ON THE GOOD THINGS THAT ARE TAKING PLACE AND REALLY WORK TOGETHER AS A TEAM PROVIDING STRATEGIC DIRECTION AND DISTRICT LEADERSHIP TO MOVE THE SCHOOL DISTRICT FORWARD. I WOULD LISTEN AND LEARN AND THEN COME TOGETHER AROUND SOME JOINT PLANS THROUGH COLLABORATION AND
[00:10:06]
HIGH-PERFORMING TEAMS TO BEGIN TO GET TO WORK. >> DRILLING DOWN JUST A LITTLE BIT CAN YOU GIVE US SPECIFIC EXAMPLES OF SUCCESSFUL PROGRAMMING THAT YOU LEAD THAT
WOULD BE APPLICABLE IN CALVERT COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS? >> ABSOLUTELY.
THANK YOU FOR THAT QUESTION. I'M VERY PROUD OF THE WORK THAT HAS BEEN ABLE TO BE ACCOMPLISHED IN THE SCHOOLS THAT I HAVE LED AS A PRINCIPAL AND/OR LETTER FROM A CENTRAL OFFICE DISTRICT LEADER PERSPECTIVE.I WILL START OFF WITH HIGH SCHOOL AND WORK IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS. WE'VE BEEN ABLE TO'S TEAM OF EXECUTIVE STAFF AND OF COURSE ME LEADING THE CHARGE TO BE ABLE TO CLOSE OPPORTUNITY GAPS AND REALLY THINK ABOUT THE EXPANSION OF COLLEGE AND CAREER PATHWAYS MAKING SURE THAT OUR STUDENTS ARE WORKING IN A VERY LARGE SCHOOL SYSTEM AND THEN OF COURSE BEING ASSIGNED TO A NETWORK OF SCHOOLS EVEN WHEN I WAS IN THE SUPERINTENDENT IT WAS IMPORTANT FOR ME TO THINK ABOUT OPPORTUNITY AND ACCESS FOR STUDENTS MAKING SURE THAT THEY HAVE ACCESS TO ROBUST CTE PROGRAMS OF STUDY IN COLLEGE AND CAREER PATHWAYS SUCH AS AVID WHICH ALLOW STUDENTS TO EXPLORE PROCESSES THAT PREPARE THEM FOR COLLEGE. AND THEN ALSO THINKING ABOUT ADVANCED PLACEMENT DUAL ENROLLMENT, MAGNET PROGRAMS SUCH AS PROJECT LEAD THE WAY. WHEN WE THINK ABOUT MIDDLE SCHOOL WE ARE CURRENTLY ENGAGED IN THE MIDDLE SCHOOL REFORM EFFORT AND WE'RE REALLY LOOKING AT WHAT'S HAPPENING IN SOME OF OUR MIDDLE SCHOOLS AND HOW WE ARE ABLE TO BOOST THE STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT FOR SOME OF OUR MIDDLE SCHOOL LEARNERS AND THINKING ABOUT SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING WHICH WE BEEN ABLE TO ROLL OUT AND THINKING ABOUT ADVISORIES FOR OUR STUDENTS.
STUDENTS CAN BENEFIT FROM ADVISORIES AND MAKING SURE THAT THEY ARE WELL-ROUNDED WITHIN THAT AGE GROUP. WE WORK WITH STUDENTS TO THINK ABOUT ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS AND PROGRAMS THAT REQUIRE STUDENT LEADERSHIP. WE RECOGNIZE THAT STUDENTS REALLY WANT TO LEAD AND LAID WELL SO WE PUT IN PLACE ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS AND ACCELERATION PROGRAMS BEFORE, AFTER SCHOOL AND ON SATURDAYS SO THAT OUR PARENTS AND FAMILIES HAVE ACCESS. WE EXPANDED EVEN OUR GIFTED AND TALENTED PROGRAM FOR OUR GRADES. THEY THINK ABOUT STUDENTS THAT ARE SHOWING PROMISE IN THE AREA OF READING AND OR MATHEMATICS. EVEN SOCIAL SCIENCES VERY PROUD ABOUT THE EXPANSION OF PROGRAMS FROM HIGH SCHOOL THROUGH ELEMENTARY. AND ALSO JUST OUR WORK WITH TEACHERS. I'M VERY PROUD OF OUR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM THAT IS IN PLACE TO HELP US GROW AND SUPPORT OUR TEACHERS AS THEY DO THIS INCREDIBLE AND A MEETING JOB OF EDUCATING OUR STUDENTS. THANK YOU.
>> YOU MENTIONED IN YOUR INTRODUCTION THE VALUE AND THE SECOND QUESTION AS WELL, THE VALUE OF COMMUNITY AND FAMILY ENGAGEMENT. CAN YOU TALK ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH BOTH FAMILY AND BUSINESS ENGAGEMENT AND IN THE COMMUNITY?
>> I'D BE HAPPY TO. I ENJOY MEETING NEW PEOPLE. I ENJOY AND I BELIEVE THAT WE ARE IN THE EDUCATION AND PEOPLE BUSINESS SO MY COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT EXTENDS VERY FAR BUT THEN ALSO IS KIND OF EMBEDDED IN THE COMMUNITY SO I START OFF WITH WITHIN OUR LOCAL COMMUNITY IT IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR ME TO ATTEND SCHOOL BASE EVENTS AND ALSO JUST ATTEND THE SCHOOL ON A REGULAR DAY TO MEET FAMILIES EITHER BEFORE SCHOOL OR AFTER SCHOOL AND ENGAGE WITH OUR FAMILIES AS THEY DROP OFF OR PICK UP STUDENTS. THAT IS A GREAT TIME TO CONNECT WITH FAMILIES WHEN MY SCHEDULE ALLOWS ME TO DO SO. I AM ALSO ABLE TO MEET WITH OUR FAMILIES AND REGULARLY SCHEDULED MEETINGS. WE STUDENT ADVISORY AND PARENT ADVISORY COUNCILS THAT MEET ONCE A MONTH. I MEET WITH THE NORTHWEST AND SOUTHWEST ADVISORY COUNCIL MONTHLY. I'VE BEEN MEETING WITH THEM IN MY ROLE AS COMMUNITY COMMITTEE SUPERINTENDENT AND ALSO IN MY PREVIOUS ROLES IS ATTENDING PT COUNCIL MEETINGS AND MAKING SURE THAT WE ARE STAYING ABREAST AND A TWO-WAY COMMUNICATIVE PROCESS AND DIALOGUING BOTH BACK AND FORTH. WE'VE ENGAGED OUR STAKEHOLDERS AROUND THE RELEVANT WORK OF SCL LATELY TO MAKE SURE THAT OUR STAKEHOLDERS AND STUDENTS AND FAMILIES HAVE AN UNDERSTANDING OF OUR DESIRE TO EDUCATE THAT AND THAT IS HAPPEN MORE
[00:15:03]
RECENTLY VIRTUALLY AND SOMETIMES IN COMMUNITY FORMS SUCH AS TOWN HALLS.E'VE ALSO MET VIRTUAL ROUNDTABLES IF YOU WILL BRINGING STAKEHOLDERS TOGETHER.I'VE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO ATTEND LEGISLATIVE EVENTS WITH OUR COLLECTIVE BARGAINING KEY STAKEHOLDERS I NEED ABOUT THE UNION'S EFFORTS TO REALLY MAKE SURE THAT THEIR MEMBERS ARE TAKEN CARE OF HER THAT THE SCHOOL SYSTEM IS MEETING THEM HALFWAY.
AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST IN TERMS OF COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES, I'VE BEEN ABLE TO WORK WITH ADMINISTRATORS AND EXECUTIVE STAFF TO HOST COLLEGE FAIRS FOR STUDENTS WERE COLLEGES ACTUALLY COME TO OUR AREA AND STUDENTS ARE ABLE TO RECEIVE ACCEPTANCES ON THE SPOT.
I'M VERY PROUD OF THAT WORK. WE WERE ABLE TO KEEP THAT WORK GOING SO ANYTHING FROM MEETING AND VISITING SCHOOLS WITH THE STATE SUPERINTENDENT TO MEETING WITH BOARD MEMBERS TO DISCUSS ANY ISSUES OR CONCERNS. MEETING WITH COUNSEL MANIC DISTRICTS AND THOSE IN CHARGE OF THOSE DISTRICTS TO PROVIDE QUARTERLY UPDATES ON SCHOOLS. T GOES FROM JUST NEEDING PARENTS AT THE SCHOOL TO THOSE LOCAL AND STATE OFFICIALS. I'VE HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE CONVERSATIONS WITH THE SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE. SENATORS AND COUNCILMEMBERS WITH THE VARIOUS POINTS AND HOW WE COME TOGETHER TO MAKE THINGS BETTER IN SERVICE OF STUDENTS.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT TO ME AS VERY IMPORTANT AND I BELIEVE THAT WE CAN WORK TOGETHER FOR THE COMMON GOOD OF STUDENTS THROUGH CIVIL DISCOURSE AND THROUGH OUR COMMON DESIRE TO
SEE STUDENTS SUCCEED. >> HE ALSO TALKED A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF ENGAGEMENT WITH STAFF AND COMMUNICATION. HOW YOU CAN MAKE IT WITH STAFF
AT EVERY LEVEL? >> COMMUNICATING WITH STAFF AT EVERY LEVEL IS IMPORTANT TO ME.
IT'S INTERESTING ACTUALLY JUST STARTED READING ABOUT THIS BOOK CALLED LEADERSHIP AT EVERY LEVEL. TO ME OF COURSE COMMUNICATION COMES IN VARIOUS MEDIUMS. I PREFER TO HAVE INTERACTIVE CONVERSATIONS WITH STAFF AND I KNOW THAT WHENEVER WE'RE TALKING ABOUT A LARGE AMOUNT OF STAFF THAT'S NOT ALWAYS EASY TO GET TO.
I LIKE TO BEGIN WITH ONE ON ONES ESPECIALLY WITH THE EXECUTIVE STAFF ESPECIALLY WITH THE MINISTRY OF STAFF IN THE COUNTY JUST TO REALLY GT A SENSE OF THEIR WORK WITH THE BUDGET OR SPECIAL EDUCATION. THE THINGS THAT REALLY CREATE A CONDITION FOR LEARNING IS GOING TO BE IMPORTANT TO ME THAT THOSE CONVERSATIONS TAKE PLACE. AND FREQUENTLY ON A RECURRING BASIS. I HAVE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO MEET WITH HOURS CHIEFS AND EXECUTIVE STAFF TO LOOK AT THINGS LIKE CURRICULUM INJECTION, TRANSPORTATION, BUDGET AND FINANCE AND THOSE THINGS TO MAKE SURE THAT OPERATIONS ARE RUNNING SMOOTHLY AND I DON'T TAKE THOSE MEETINGS FOR GRANTED. OF COURSE THEY WILL BE FACE-TO-FACE INTERACTIONS THERE. LIKE TO GET A SENSE OF THE PRINCIPLES AND THE SCHOOLS FOR SERVING THE 16,000 STUDENTS. BEING A PRINCIPAL IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE POSITIONS AND I BELIEVE THAT IF PRINCIPLES ARE SUPPORTED AND PROVIDED THE NECESSARY SUPPORT THEY CAN THEN PROVIDE THOSE SUPPORTS TO THEIR STAFF.
I WOULD WANT TO MEET WITH THEM VISITING SCHOOLS, WALKING AND TALKING IN AND OUT OF CLASSROOMS. I KNOW THE PANDEMIC CHANGE THAT BUT NOW THAT WE ARE STARTING TO SLOWLY UNDERSTAND A LITTLE BETTER WE ARE ABLE TO RESUME SCHOOL VISITS AND CONDUCT SCHOOL VISITS VERY SAFELY SO THAT I CAN GET TO KNOW THE PRINCIPLES AND SCHOOL-BASED TEAMS. THERE'S ALWAYS AN OPPORTUNITY TO SIT ON PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND REALLY GET A SENSE OF WHAT IS IT THAT THE TEACHERS NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL.
I BELIEVE OUR TEACHERS HAVE BEEN SO RESILIENT AND ARE INCREDIBLE ROCK STARS IN THIS WORK OF EDUCATING OUR STUDENTS SO I'D WANT THEM TO LEARN ALONGSIDE THEM AND GET A SENSE OF WHAT IT IS THEY NEED FROM IN TERMS OF PROFESSIONAL GROWTH. THE SOPHISTICATION, EMAIL IS ALWAYS AN OPPORTUNITY TO SEND EMAILS. WEEKLY UPDATES IN TERMS OF THE BOARD AND THE INFORMATION WITH THE BOARD AND THEN OF COURSE THERE ARE UPDATES THAT YOU PROVIDE FOR HAVE PROVIDED FOR OUR COMMUNITY MEMBERS AND STAKEHOLDERS TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY KNOW WHETHER IT IS COMMUNICATIONS OR LETTERS TO THE COMMUNITY PROVIDING THOSE
[00:20:06]
OPPORTUNITIES FOR THEM TO SHARE. AND THEN TOSE TOWN HALLS AND STAKEHOLDER INPUT MEETINGS ARE VERY VALUABLE AS WELL. WE ARE ABLE TO ENGAGE IN BACK-AND-FORTH DIALOGUE IN TERMS OF WHAT IS BEST FOR STUDENTS.THERE ARE MULTIPLE WAYS THAT I WILL COMMUNICATE AND BE OPEN TO THE WAYS THAT ARE ALREADY IN PLACE ARE SUCCESSFUL BECAUSE I WOULD WANT THE COMMUNICATION TO BE CLEAR, SUCCESSFUL AND TO BE
HELPFUL SO THANK YOU. >> WHAT ARE SOME OF THE PRACTICES THAT YOU WILL EMPLOY TO ENHANCE AND IMPROVE VISIBILITY WITH STAFF AND WITH FAMILIES?
>> WOMAN: I DO THINK IT TOUCHED HIM NOT A LITTLE BIT TOO.
I AM HIGHLY VISIBLE NOT TO THE POINT WHERE IT'S OVERLY VISIBLE BUT I AM HIGHLY VISIBLE WHEN IT COMES TO WHAT IS HAPPENING IN THE SCHOOLS. I BELIEVE THAT STUDENTS ARE AT THE CENTER OF OUR WORK AND WE HAVE SCHOOLS THAT CREATE THE SPACE FOR STUDENTS TO GROW AND ACHIEVE AND AGAIN NOW MORE THAN EVER I WANT OUR TEACHERS TO FEEL SUPPORTED AND I WANT HER STAFF TO FEEL EMPOWERED. SO THROUGH A HIGH LEVEL OF VISIBILITY AND INTERACTION THAT'S JUST BEEN MY WAY ALONG. I GUESS THAT I ENJOY PEOPLE. I THINK I'M EASY TO TALK TO AND ALTHOUGH THERE ARE OPPORTUNITIES FOR IF WE ARE IN VERY FORMAL MEETINGS OR SETTINGS THAT MAY NOT NECESSARILY BE ABLE TO HAPPEN BUT I ENJOY PRE-MEETINGS.
ENJOY MEETING AFTER WE VISIT CLASSROOMS JUST TO VISIT AND GET A SENSE OF WHAT WE SAW.
I WAS ASKED HOW I CAN SUPPORT YOU. SO THROUGH JUST SHOWING UP AND NOT TO SHOWING UP WHEN THEY ARE CELEBRATION I LIKE TO SHOP WHEN THERE ARE SOMETIMES WHETHER I'M INVITED BY A PRINCIPAL OR STAFF MEMBER OR ACTUALLY VISIT WITH THE EXECUTIVE STAFF.
I ENJOY THAT TOO. I VISITED WITH THE TEAM RECENTLY WE VISITED A SCHOOL WITH OUR CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION. WE WORK WITH OUR DIRECTOR OF SOCIAL WORK AND SOME OF OUR STAFF MEMBERS WHO ARE REALLY HELPING TO THINK ABOUT SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING AND REVISIT HIS IS A SMALL TEAM AND THAT WAS COOPERATIVE AS IT WAS EVERYONE COMING TOGETHER AS A THINK TANK TO SUPPORT THE SCHOOL AND OF COURSE THE PRINCIPLES INVOLVED. IT REALLY FELT GREAT TO BE A PARTNER AND A THOUGHT LEADERS SO MY VISIBILITY WILL BE IN SHOWING UP AND MAKING SURE THAT AS WE ARE HEARING THE FEEDBACK ARE FOLLOW-UP ACTION ALLOWS US TO LEAD THE WAY FOR WHAT WE EXPECT SCHOOLS TO ENGAGE IN.
I WOULD LIKE TO MAKE SURE THAT A CENTRAL OFFICE STAFF WE ARE DOING NOW AND I'M SURE I'VE HEARD SOME REALLY GREAT THINGS AND I'VE HEARD THAT IN CALVERT COUNTY THAT IS ARTIE HAPPENING.
>> PIVOTING JUST A LITTLE BIT, CAN YOU TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT WHAT YOU HAVE DONE TO POSITIVELY IMPACT STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT AND TO CLOSE GAPS IN YOUR CURRENT ROLE IN ANY
PREVIOUS ROLES THAT YOU WANT TO TALK ABOUT. >> CLOSING ACHIEVEMENT GAPS HAS BEEN A PART OF THE WORK OF MOST LEADERS IN THIS MOMENT. REALLY THINKING ABOUT HOW WE'RE MAKING SURE THAT OUR PRACTICES ARE EQUITABLE AND THAT STUDENTS ARE RECEIVING A HIGH QUALITY EDUCATION. WHEN I THINK ABOUT ACHIEVEMENT MY WORK HAS BEEN THINKING ABOUT THE PERSISTENT DISPARITIES IN THE MEASURES OF EDUCATIONAL PERFORMANCE OR ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE AMONG SUBGROUPS. I'VE BEEN THINKING ABOUT AND WORKING WITH, HALF-ASLEEP AND THINKING AND WORKING WITH OUR DIVISION THEY LOOK AT DATA AND CONSIDER HOW OUR STUDENTS ARE IMPROVING. THINKING AND WORKING WITH OUR STUDENTS OF MANY RACES.
>> ALSO HOW ARE STUDENTS RECEIVING SERVICES SUCH AS SPECIAL EDUCATION IT ALLOWS ME TO CLOSE GAPS IN THE ACTUATION, DROPOUT RATES AND MY ROLE AS COMMUNITY IN ATTENDANCE. OUR GRADUATION RATES, I'M REALLY PROUD OF THE WORK THAT THE TEAM AND I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO ACCOMPLISH. WE WORKED WITH EACH SCHOOL TO DEVELOP PLANS. WE ALWAYS CONSIDER ABOUT THE OTHER 5% AND HOW WE CAN MAKE
[00:25:02]
SURE THAT THERE IS CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT. I'M PROUD TO SAY THAT SOME OF OUR SCHOOLS FOR EVEN SERVING OUR STUDENTS WHO RECEIVE ENGLISH LANGUAGE SERVICES ARE PERFORMING EVEN BETTER THAN THEY DID ONCE WE FIRST WERE ASSIGNED THE SCHOOLS.NOW IS THE SCHOOLS THAT ARE AT THE 93 OR 95 PERCENTILE EVEN CREEPING UP 1 TO 2% TO MAKE SURE THAT STUDENTS ARE GETTING WHAT THEY NEED AT BOTH ENDS AND EVERY LEVEL OF ABILITY.
>> IN ADDITION TO THAT WE TAKE A CLOSE LOOK AT MATHEMATICS. I WAS ASSIGNED AS AN AMBASSADOR FOR THE SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT TEAMS FOR MATHEMATICS. IN THINKING ABOUT IT, HOW CAN WE IMPROVE MATHEMATICS IN A NOISY THINKING ABOUT A LOT BECAUSE THIS IS REALLY A THOUGHTFUL PROCESS.T'S A PROCESS THAT WE PUT SOME OF THE SMARTEST PEOPLE IN THE ROOM TOGETHER AND THEY ARE ABLE TO PROVIDE THAT STRATEGIC DIRECTION.
WE LOOKED AT HOW MANY OF HER STUDENTS ARE BEING SERVED AND OR HAVE ACCESS TO ADVANCED PLACEMENT COURSES IN MATHEMATICS STARTING WITH ALGEBRA ONE AGREED EIGHT.
WE FINALLY PUT THINGS IN PLACE TO MAKE SURE THAT WE CLOSE GAPS AROUND JUST THE SELECTION OF STUDENTS. HAD WE HELP OUR TEACHERS PROVIDE THE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT THAT IS NEEDED THAT THEY CAN THEN MOVE THAT WORK FORWARD AND WE'VE NOTICED THAT WE'RE IN THE PROCESS OF IMPROVING OUR PARTICIPATION RATES FOR STUDENTS IN HOSPITAL AND BY GREED TOO BECAUSE KNOWLEDGE: IS READINESS AND IT'S AN INDICATOR OF FUTURE SUCCESS WE FOCUS OUR EFFORTS THERE. AS A PRINCIPAL I GO BACK A LITTLE BIT FURTHER, I'VE BEEN ABLE TO TURN AROUND LOW PERFORMING SCHOOLS AND CREATE CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT IN SCHOOLS THAT WERE BECOMING A LITTLE BIT, I DON'T WANT TO SAY STAGNANT BUT JUST NEEDED A BOOST OF INSTRUCTIONAL PROGRAMMING AND INSTRUCTIONAL LEADERSHIP AND WITH CLOSE GAPS FOR MY STUDENTS TO MAKE SURE THAT THOSE STUDENTS RECEIVE EXACTLY WHAT THEY NEED. MORE RECENTLY THINKING ABOUT MATHEMATICS AND OUR COLLEGE AND CAREER READINESS PATHWAYS AND OF COURSE OUR GRADUATION RATES WITH HAS BEEN THE FOCUS OF THE WORK THAT I'VE BEEN ABLE TO ACCOMPLISH REGARDING THE CLOSING ACHIEVEMENT GAPS AND MAKING SURE'S HAVE EXACTLY WHAT THEY NEED TO DO ON STANDARDIZED TESTS AND AS CITIZENS OF LOCAL
SOCIETY. >> THANK YOU FOR THAT. >> WOULD YOU SHARE SOME
EXPERIENCES YOU HAVE IN STAFF RETENTION? >> YES I'D BE ABLE TO.
ONE OF MY FAVORITE THINGS TO DO IS TO THINK ABOUT THE NEEDS OF THE SCHOOL SYSTEM AND HIGHER ACCORDINGLY. WITH THAT SAID I'D BE ABLE TO THINK VERY DEEPLY ABOUT WHAT ARE THE NEEDS OF THE SCHOOL SYSTEM WHETHER IT'S A CENTRAL OFFICE POSITION AND HOW CAN WE COME TOGETHER TO HIRE STAFF THAT UNDERSTANDS THE TRYSTS STRATEGIC PLAN AND DIRECTION OF THE SCHOOL SYSTEM. I'VE WORKED COLLABORATIVELY WITH THE HUMAN RESOURCES DEPARTMENT TO MAKE SURE THAT WE ARE IN SYNC AND ALIGNED AND MAKING SURE THAT IT IS A HIRING PROCESS THAT IS COLLABORATIVE THERE'S A DIVERSE MENTIONED THAT VOICE IS POSSIBLE ARE REPRESENTED I'VE ATTENDED HIRING FEARS TO MAKE SURE THAT PART MAKE SURE THAT WE GET STUDENTS WHO ARE EAGER TO SERVE IN THIS NEXT LEVEL OF WORK IN TERMS OF EDUCATION.
AND SO JUST WORKING WITH COLLEGE OVERSEAS, HUMAN RESOURCES TO HIRE, SELECT AND
[00:30:08]
RETAIN HIGH-QUALITY TEACHERS AND AS I STATED BEFORE WE'RE JUST VERY PROUD THAT THERE IS SOME HIGH-QUALITY TEACHERS IN THE SCHOOLS THAT I'VE BEEN DIRECTLY ASSIGNED TO.WE WERE ABLE TO RETAIN STAFF IN A DIVERSE MIX AND THAT TO ME IS THE BEAUTY OF IT.
WE HAVE STAFF WHO WANT TO WORK WITH OUR STUDENTS TO CLOSE ACHIEVEMENT GAPS AND OF COURSE THAT WHAT CAN HAPPEN ACROSS OUR SCHOOLS. AND THEN WE HAVE SOME STAFF REALLY WANT TO THINK ABOUT HOW CAN I MAKE A DRASTIC IMPACT IN THE LIFE OF A STUDENT WHO MAY BE RECEIVING SPECIAL EDUCATION SERVICES SO WE TAKE OUR EFFORTS VERY SERIOUSLY ARE ABLE TO HIRE AND PROVIDE THOSE PERFORMANCE FEES QUESTIONS AND GO THROUGH THE INTERVIEW PROCESS WE MAKE SURE WE HAVE A REALLY RICH ON BOARDING AN INDUCTION PROGRAM IN MEXICO WORKING WITH CENTRAL OFFICE STAFF IN THE DEPARTMENT TO PUT IN PLACE A ROBUST DEDUCTION ON BOARDING PROCESS FOR OUR NEW LEADERS AND OUR TEACHERS AND STAFF MEMBERS TO MAKE SURE THAT WE ARE ABLE TO RETAIN THEM EARLY ON. THE TRUE MEASURE OF DOING THAT IS SUPPORT.
HANDS-ON , TO A COMMUNICATION, MENTORING IS VERY IMPORTANT. TO ME I PROFESSIONALLY AND FORMALLY AND INFORMALLY MENTOR SEVERAL SCHOOL LEADERS WITHIN OUR DISTRICT AND WITHIN SCHOOLS AND WITHIN CENTRAL OFFICE AND THEY HAVE TOLD ME THAT THEY BENEFIT FROM THAT AND WE ALSO PROVIDE NEW TEACHERS SUPPORT ANY PRINCIPAL SUPPORT THAT IS DIFFERENTIATED BUT THAT ALSO COVERS EVERYTHING THAT THEY NEED TO KNOW TO BE SUCCESSFUL SO HIRING, SELECTING AND RETAINING STAFF AS A PART OF THE WORK THAT I REALLY ENJOY AND I LOVE MAKING THOSE CONNECTIONS AND HELPING OUR NEW STAFF REALLY SORT THEIR PROBLEMS AND PRACTICE OF SOME OF US ARE SORTING THROUGH IN THIS NEW NORMAL IF YOU WILL. BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS, PROVIDING SUPPORT AND OF COURSE THE PROFESSIONAL ISSUES THAT GO ALONG WITH IT WHICH ARWAYS THAT WE ACCOMPLISH THAT.> WHAT IS BEEN YOUR EXPERIENCE IN BUILDING A SOLID AND SUCCESSFUL
IN MINISTRY TO TEAM? >> HAVE BEEN VERY SUPPORTIVE AND I CAN'T THINK THE TEAM THAT I WORK WITH AS WELL AS THEIR ABILITY TO HAVE A SENSE OF URGENCY AND COMPASSION AT THE SAME TIME. THAT'S ONE OF THE THINGS I LOOK FOR.
I THINK CONTENT KNOWLEDGE AND WORK KNOWLEDGE AND PROFESSIONAL GROWTH.
I ALSO WHEN I'M ABLE TO HIRE AND OR SELECT SOMEONE WHO HAS THAT BUT THEN HAS THE PASSION AND THEDRIVE AND RELENTLESS COMMITMENT THAT GOES ALONG WITH THAT SO ON THOSE DAYS WERE BURNOUT TRIES TO SEEP AND WE ARE ABLE TO UP. WHILE YES I AM THE LEADER AND I LEAVE THE WORK I ALSO ENJOY LEARNING NEW THINGS THAT I DIDN'T KNOW FROM MY ADMINISTRATIVE TEAM. I BELIEVE THAT THE TEAM SHOULD ALSO BE DIVERSE IN MULTIPLE WAYS WHETHER IT'S FROM WHERE THEY WERE BORN, WHERE THEY WERE RAISED, WHAT ARE THEY PADVOCATING FOR SO THAT WHEN WE COME TOGETHER IT'S A NICE MINISTRY OF TEAM PUZZLE.
WE BUILD EACH OTHER UP BUT KNOWN AS STRONG AND KNOWS EVERYTHING.
WE HAVE A SENSE OF URGENCY, COMPASSION, SENSITIVITY AND WE ARE RESULTS ORIENTED AND THEN TAIPEI, HIGH-PERFORMING AND WE'RE HERE WORK COMES TOGETHER IN A WAY WHERE IT IS A HIGH-PERFORMING TEAM THAT'S HIGH FUNCTIONING, FOCUSED ON THE WORK WITH STUDENTS AT THE
[00:35:01]
CENTER. WE HAVE A NECK FOR DRAWING PEOPLE OF LIKE-MINDED PASSION AND LOVE FOR CHILDREN AND LEARNING TO COME TOGETHER IN A VERY COHESIVE WAY TO JUST BRING ABOUT CHANGE FOR STUDENTS. I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS AND ESTABLISHING A STRONG COLLABORATIVE RELATIONSHIP WITH THE MINISTRY TEAM THERE.>> HOW WE BUILD A CULTURE OF EQUITY AND INCLUSION THROUGHOUT THE DISTRICT DIRECTLY IMPACTING
STUDENTS, STAFF AND PARENTS? >> I WOULD BUILD A CULTURE OF EQUITY JUST REALLY THINKING ABOUT SOME OF THE THINGS THAT CALVERT COUNTY IS ALREADY WORKING ON AND THAT'S MAKING SURE THAT WE ARE USING AN EQUITABLE LENS AND FOCUSED ON STUDENTS AND SCHOOLS EVERY STUDENT. SO WHEN I THINK ABOUT DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION I KNOW A LOT OF TIMES THE WORDS KIND OF COME TOGETHER AS DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION BUT ALSO I LIKE TO THINK OF THEM AS SIMILARITIES AND IN WAYS THAT PROVIDE FOR THOSE OPPORTUNITIES THAT YOU JUST SAID TO MAKE SURE THAT THE STAKEHOLDERS ARE IMPACTED.
WHEN I THINK ABOUT THE DIVERSITY OF EXPERIENCE I THINK ABOUT DIVERSITY BEING KIND OF THE PRESENCE OF DIFFERENCES THAT ENRICH OUR WORKPLACE OR OUR EDUCATIONAL ORGANIZATION.
I WOULD WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT AS THE LEADER OF CALVERT COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS THAT WE ARE NOT MYOPICALLY THINKING ABOUT DIVERSITY AND I'M NOT SAYING THAT'S THE CASE BUT I THINK IN SOME INSTANCES DIVERSITY JUST DEALS WITH THE RICHNESS OF OUR DIFFERENCES AND I WOULD WANT TO CELEBRATE THAT AMONG STAFF. THAT ALLOWS US TO ENGAGE OF COURSE ONCE THERE IS A CELEBRATION OF DIFFERENCES THAT ENRICH OUR SCHOOL SYSTEM AND THEN OF COURSE JUST EQUITY ENSURING THAT ACCESS, RESOURCES AND OPPORTUNITIES ARE PROVIDED FOR EVERY STUDENT TO SUCCEED AND GROW. ESPECIALLY FOR THOSE THAT ARE UNDERREPRESENTED AND HAVE BEEN HISTORICALLY DISADVANTAGED. TO ME EQUITY MEANS MAKING SURE EVERY STUDENT HAS WHAT THEY NEED. WE CAN MAKE SURE EVERY STUDENT HAS EVERYTHING THEY NEED NO MATTER THEIR RACE, BACKGROUND, ETHNICITY, STATUS OR SOCIOECONOMIC STATUS.
I BELIEVE THAT COULD BE HAPPENING IN AN AP CLASS AND AN INTERVENTION CLASS. BELIEVE THAT EQUITY IS NOT A DESTINATION BUT IT'S A JOURNEY. EQUITY CAN TOUCH ON US AS A BODY IN TERMS OF HUMANITY. IT'S AN INCLUSIVE CULTURE BASED ON MY EXPERIENCE AND I'VE DONE THAT IN THE PAST. THAT'S REALLY JUST THINKING ABOUT THE ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE THAT IS WELCOMING AND INCLUSIVE TO PEOPLE REGARDLESS OF AS A SET OF RACE, ETHNICITY, PGENDER, AGE OR RELIGION. MAKING SURE THAT EVERYONE FEELS VALUED AND RESPECTED UNABLE TO REACH THEIR FULL POTENTIAL. I FEEL THAT EVERYONE SHOULD BE VALUED AND INCLUDED NOT EXCLUDED END CONVERSATION. DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION MAKING SURE THAT THERE IS A CULTURE OF EQUITY WITHIN THE SCHOOL SYSTEM WOULD REALLY BE BUILDING ON THE STRATEGIC PLAN THAT'S IN PLACE AND CALVERT COUNTY. HAVE HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO DO SOME OF THE PRESENTATIONS AND LOOK AT SOME OF THE DOCUMENTS AND CALVERT COUNTY IS DEFINITELY ON THE RIGHT TRACK AS IT RELATES TO SOME OF THAT WORK. I WOULD WANT TO ENHANCE IT AND HAVE CONVERSATIONS ABOUT ANY ADJUSTMENTS THAT MAY BE NEEDED AND GET THE VOICE OF OUR COMMUNITY TO MAKE SURE THAT WE ARE DEVELOPING A COMMON UNDERSTANDING.
IT'S IMPORTANT TO ME THAT STAKEHOLDERS KNOW THAT EVERY CHILD IS IMPORTANT AND THAT EQUITY MEANS HAVING EVERY CHILD WITH A NEED AND I BELIEVE THE THEY ARE CONTINUOU IMPROVEMENTS AND CLOSING OF GAPS AT THE SAME TIME TO RAISE STUDENTACHIEVEMENT TO THINK
YOU FOR THAT QUESTION AROUND BUILDING A CULTURE OF EQUITY. >> WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE POST-PANDEMIC CRITICAL ISSUES THAT WILL FACE EDUCATION IN THE NEXT FIVE YEARS?
[00:40:04]
>> THERE ARE SEVERAL. THERE ARE SEVERAL ISSUES THAT AS I HAVE TALKED WITH EDUCATORS AT MANY LEVELS, I WOULD SAY IS A PRIORITY I'M HEARING AND I'M NOT GIVING THESE IN AN ORDER BUT THESE ARE THE PRIORITIES. I'M HEARING A LOT ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH AND MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT FOR OUR STUDENTS AND THEN OF COURSE THINKING ABOUT THE MENTAL HEALTH AND WELL-BEING OF OUR STUDENTS THINKING ABOUT INVESTING IN OUR TEACHERS AND MAKING SURE THAT TEACHERS FEEL VALUED AND WHAT CAN SOMETIMES BE A THANKLESS FIELD.
THEY INVEST IN THE WELL-BEING OF THEIR GROWTH AND WOULD BE A PART OF THAT LIST IN ADDITION TO MENTAL HEALTH AND THEN I JUST THINK IT'S THE CURRENT LANDSCAPE AS IT RELATES TO WHAT IT MEANS TO HAVE A SAFE AND SUPPORTIVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND EVERYTHING THAT THAT ENCOMPASSES IN TERMS OF MAKING SURE THAT STUDENTS FEEL SAFE FROM A SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING PERSPECTIVE AND THEN OF COURSE THERE IS THE HEALTH COMPONENT.
I THINK IF I JUST HAD TO NAME THREE BUT LIKE I SAID THERE'S MORE.
THERE'S TEACHER SHORTAGES AND APPLICATIONS FOR BUDGET AND FINANCE.
WHAT I'M HEARING MORE AND MORE ARE ISSUES AND CONCERNS. THAT'S WHAT I'M LISTENING TO.
JUST MAKING SURE THAT WE FOCUS ON MENTAL HEALTH. AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST JUST MAKING SURE THAT WE GET BACK TO A PLACE OF JUST COHERENCE OVERALL.
JUST NATIONALLY. NOT THAT WE LOST OUR FOCUS BUT THE PANDEMIC IS PROVIDED US WITH A HUGE DISTRACTION AS IT RELATES TO JUST SOME OF THE THINGS THAT WE'VE BEEN ABLE TO FOCUS ON AND I'M HEARING EDUCATORS SAY THAT THEY REALLY WANT TO EXPLORE SOME NEW OPPORTUNITIES THAT ALLOW US TO STAY SAFE BUT ALSO MAKE SURE THAT STUDENTS ARE RECEIVING THOSE ENRICHING EXPERIENCES SO THOSE ARE JUST A FEW THAT I'M HEARING AS I TALKED TO LEADERS.
THERE ARE MANY OPPORTUNITIES FOR CHANGE AND GROWTH AND RECOVERY AS WE WERE CHARGED WITH OPENING THE SCHOOLS IN BALTIMORE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS ARE JUST HEARING THAT RESONATING PRIORITIES EVEN NOW AND WANTING TO MAKE SURE THAT WE ARE ABLE TO TOUCH ON THOSE.
WE WENT TO COLLEGE SOCIAL WORKERS IF WE HAVE ANY JOINING US IN THIS APPRECIATION WEEK BUT JUST THINKING ABOUT SOCIAL WORKER PSYCHOLOGISTS WITH NURSES AND THINKING ABOUT BEEFING UP THOSE EXPERTS THAT CAN HELP US TAKE CARE OF THE MENTAL HEALTH NEEDS AND THE SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING OF OUR STUDENT SO THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
>> WE HAVE JUST A COUPLE OF MINUTES (WHEN ASKED THE NEXT QUESTION BECAUSE I WANT TO GIVE YOU A CHANCE TO TALK ABOUT SOMETHING YOU'RE PROUD OF. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR GREAT
PERSONAL SATISFACTION AS AN EDUCATOR? >> WELL, MY GREATEST PERSONAL SATISFACTION AS AN EDUCATOR. THERE ARE MANY THINGS THAT MAKE ME PROUD OF THIS WORK BUT IF I HAD TO SEE MY GREATEST PERSONAL SATISFACTION. IT HAS BEEN WHEN I HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO WORK WITH SMART TALENTED DEEPLY COMMITTED EDUCATORS IN SERVICE OF STUDENTS. HAVE HAD OPPORTUNITIES TO PARTNER WITH OUR LOCAL BUSINESSES ARE EDUCATORS. AND BRING ABOUT CHANGE AND RESOURCES TO OUR SCHOOLS.
WE SURPRISED TEACHERS OF THE YEARS OR ADMINISTRATORS OF THE YEAR AND SHOWING UP FOR THOSE CELEBRATORY EVENTS. THOSE MOMENTS MAKE ME PROUD BECAUSEI REALLY WOULD LOVE TO SURPRISE EVERY TEACHER IN THIS MOMENT AND EVERY PRINCIPLE AND CENTRAL OFFICE STAFF IS WORKING
[00:45:04]
HARD. THE CELEBRATORY MOMENTS WHEN I'M ABLE TO PARTNER WITH THE COMMUNITY AND SPECIFICALLY OUR EDUCATION FOUNDATION TO PROVIDE UNEXPECTED RESOURCES.EVEN IN SCHOOLS THAT HAVE RESOURCES ALREADY IN PLACE. IT'S JUST ALWAYS NICE TO SURPRISE AND PARTNER AND CREATE THOSE PARTNERSHIPS THAT ALLOW STUDENTS TO HAVE RICH EXPERIENCES. THEY HAVE RESULTED IN CELEBRATION, SURPRISES, FISCAL OPPORTUNITIES AND DONATIONS AND THEN OF COURSE JUST OVERALL STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT.
KNOWING THAT 95% OF OUR STUDENTS IN A SCHOOL OR MORE ARE GRADUATING AND THEN STILL WORKING WITH PRINCIPALS AND STAFF WHO ARE WILLING TO MAKE THAT EVEN HIGHER BECAUSE STUDENTS ARE BEHIND THOSE NUMBERS. AND THEN WORKING WITH OUR STUDENTS WHO NEED ADDITIONAL SUPPORT BUT TO SEE THEM ACTUALLY GROW AND IMPROVE.
I WOULD SAY SERVING STUDENTS AND INCREASING STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT IS CELEBRATING OUR TEACHERS AND ADMINISTRATORS. IT'S A TOTAL JOY FOR ME AND THAT'S WHAT I'M MOST PROUD OF.
>> THANK YOU DOCTOR JONES THAT WAS A GREAT CONVERSATION. WE APPRECIATE YOUR INSIGHT AND PERSPECTIVE ON YOUR APPROACH TO THIS POSITION. >> WE REALLY APPRECIATE EVERYONE'S TIME THIS EVENING. BEST
[2.02 Candidate 2]
GOOD EVENING. >> ARE YOU? >> I'M FINE.> THAT EVENING TO THE PARTICIPANTS REGARDING THE COVER COUNTY SUPERINENDENT.
THIS IS A PUBLIC FORUM SO THEY WILL BE ABLE TO SEE YOU AND DIE.
WE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO SEE HEM. I'M GONNA START REQUESTING THE QUESTIONS THAT WE SHOULD END THIS ABOUT 45 MINUTES. I HAVE 12 QUESTIONS TO SK. IF YOU SPEND THREE OR FOUR MINUTES PER QUESTION WE SHOULD BE BE OKAY. GET STARTED NOW.
QUESTION NUMBER ONE. TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF INCLUDING BACKGROUND AND WHY
YOU'RE INTERESTED IN CALVERT COUNTY. >> MAN: OKAY, FIRST OF I'LL DOCTOR ANDRE TOWNES OLD CURRENTLY THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE BAY AREA SCHOOLS.
I WAS BORN AND RAISED IN DETROIT MICHIGAN. I PLAYED FOOTBALL IN HIGH SCHOOL AND EARNED A FOOTBALL SCHOLARSHIP TO HIWAY HOWARD UNIVERSITY.
WHILE I WAS AT HOWARD UNIVERSITY HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO EARN BACHELORS, MASTERS AND DOCTORATE DEGREE. I WENT THROUGH THE SUPERINTENDENT ACADEMY.
IN ADDITION TO GRADUATING FROM THE HARVARD GRADUATE SCHOOL OF EDUCATION DOING TURNAROUND LEADERSHIP WORK I'VE WORKED IN EVERY FIELD AND EVERY LEVEL OF EDUCATION FROM STUDENT TEACHER TO TEACHER, COACH, ATHLETIC DIRECTOR DEAN OF STUDENTS AND CLIMATE AND CULTURE SPECIALISTS. ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL AT THE HIGH SCHOOL LVEL.
HASKELL PRESS PRINCIPAL AND SUPERINTENDENT AND CURRENTLY IS SITTING SUPERINTENDENT.
I TAKE EDUCATION VERY SERIOUSLY. I'M A LIFELONG LEARNER AND I COMPLETED THE MICHIGAN LEADERSHIP SUPERINTENDENT ACADEMY AND I'M CERTIFIED AS A SUPERINTENDENT IN THE STATE OF MASSACHUSETTS AS WELL AS THE STATE OF MICHIGAN.
I LIVED IN THE DC AND MARYLAND AREA FOR 14 YEARS. I STARTED MY EDUCATION CAREER IN THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA AND I LIVED IN PRINCE GEORGES COUNTY MARYLAND PRIOR TO MOVING IN 2016. THE REASON I DID THAT AS MY WIFE IS A PHYSICIAN.
SHE DOES MATERNAL-FETAL MEDICINE. SHE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO
[00:50:06]
STUDY FELLOWSHIP AT YUKON. THAT TOOK INTO THE STATE OF MASSACHUSETTS WHERE HE SERVED AS A HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL IN THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS.HERE ARE A LOT OF GREAT PHENOMENAL WORK THERE NOW AND IN 2018 THAT WAS LAST YEAR THAT MY WIFE HAD TO COMPLETE HER THREE-YEAR FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM AT YUKON WERE SHE FINISHED AND GRADUATED WITH A MASTERS IN SCIENCE AND MEDICINE AND RESEARCH AS WELL AS A FELLOWSHIP OF MEDICINE. WE DECIDED WHERE WE CAN GO SHE'S FROM FLORIDA AND I'M FROM MICHIGAN AND WE LIVED IN DC. FOR ABOUT FIVE YEARS MARRIED.WE DECIDED TO GO TO ONE OF MY HOMETOWNS TO BE AROUND FAMILY. I CAME HOME TO THE GREAT STATE OF MICHIGAN AND WE SAID THIS IS VERY BEAUTIFUL. I HAVE THE PRIVILEGE OF SERVING AS AN ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT IN WESLEY COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICTS.
IT WAS THE SUBURBS WITH 11,000 STUDENTS AND 20 SCHOOLS. THERE IS A LOT OF GREAT PHENOMENAL WORK THERE. NOW IN 2019. SCHOOLS HAVE A GREAT DISTRICT ON THE WEST SIDE OF THE STATE. IT SOUTHWEST MICHIGAN AND THEY HAVE CHALLENGES.
I THOUGHT I WAS EQUIPPED TO DEAL WITH THE BY THE GRACE OF GOD HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO SERVE AS A MAJOR IN COMMUNITY. I'M HAVING THE TIME OF MY LIFE RIGHT NOW DOING GREAT WORK WITH ONLY THE BOARD OF EDUCATION BUT WITH THE COMMUNITY, AND REALLY BEING TAPPED IN AND OUT.
I KNOW A LOT ABOUT CALVERT COUNTY. LIVING IN MARYLAND YOU KNOW PRETTY MUCH ABOUT MANY COUNTIES. WE WANT TO KNOW WHERE WE CAN GET BETTER AND WILL BE INCREASED NOT ONLY ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT BUT ALSO WORK AND WE INCREASE THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE AND ALSO I DO KNOW AND COVER COUNTY THINK OF 2017 FOR STRATEGIC PLAN WAS PUT TOGETHER RIGHT NOW IT'S 2022 THIS WAS ABOUT FIVE YEARS LATER AND THE PANDEMIC HAPPENS TRYING TO MERGE OUT OF THE PANDEMIC. RIGHT NOW THE PRIME OPPORTUNITY TO REALLY START THAT PROCESS OF THE STRATEGIC PLAN IS TO SEE WHAT THE NEXT 3 TO 5 YEARS
LOOKS LIKE. >> THANK YOU SO MUCH. >> QUESTION NUMBER THREE.
PLEASE SHARE SOME SPECIFIC EXAMPLES OF SUCCESSFUL EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS YOU HAVE
LED THAT WOULD BE APPLICABLE TO COVER COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS. >> SPECIFIC EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS THAT COULD BE APPLICABLE. AT EVERY LEVEL FROM HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL TO ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT CURRENTLY IS THE SUPERINTENDENT I ALWAYS WORK COLLABORATIVELY WITH OUR LOCAL COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES ALSO WORKING WITH THE EMERALD VENTURE INSTITUTE WHERE WE HAD A RECENT SCHOOL. HAD A VIDEO ON MY SOCIAL MEDIA'S FLYING AROUND MY SCHOOL IN A PRIVATE PLANE FROM THE INSTITUTE SO IT'S A PHENOMENAL PARTNERSHIP THERE. AT THE SUPERINTENDENT LEVEL I WORK COLLABORATIVELY WITH EASTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY. THEY SUPPORTED US WITH A 21ST-CENTURY GRANT BRIGHT FUTURES PROGRAM TO SUPPORT CLIMATE CULTURE WITH SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING IN THE COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT. ONE THING I ALWAYS SAID AS CLIMATE AND CULTURE GOES SO GOES CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION ORGANICALLY HAVING THOSE EXPECTATIONS IN PLACE IN A MULTITUDE OF SYSTEM AND SUPPORT WITH THE TRUE FIDELITY WE SHALL SEE INCREASED ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AND SPECIFICALLY IT HAS A SUPERINTENDENT RIGHT NOW I WORK VERY CLOSELY NOT ONLY WITH LATE MICHIGAN COLLEGE WITH DUAL ENROLLMENT PROGRAMS BUT ALSO WITH WESTERN MICHIGAN
[00:55:01]
UNIVERSITY WITH A PIPELINE PROGRAM TO ENSURE THAT WE KEEP OUR CLASSROOMS FILLS.THERE'S A CRITICAL SHORTAGE OF TEACHERS NOT ONLY HERE IN THE STATE OF MICHIGAN BUT ACROSS THE NATION AND ACROSS THE COUNTRY. TO REALLY HAVING THOSE PARTNERSHIPS WITH UNIVERSITIES THAT ARE DEVELOPING AN EDUCATION PROGRAM SPECIFICALLY TO MEETINGS I HAVE RIGHT NOW WITH DAVENPORT UNIVERSITY WORKING WITH AN URBAN EDUCATION DEPARTMENT LOOKING FOR OPPORTUNITIES TO NOT ONLY PARTNER WITH UNIVERSITY PUTS THE STUDENT SUPPORT AND EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT LOOKING AT THAT PARTNERSHIP TO SEE HOW WE CAN PROFESSIONALLY DEVELOP OUR TEACHERS AND FIND WAYS TO GIVE OUR TEACHERS CREDENTIALS SO THEY CAN BECOME HIGHLY QUALIFIED AND STAYING BE RETAINED IN THAT SCHOOL
DISTRICT. >> QUESTION NUMBER THREE. PLEASE SHARE SOME SPECIFIC
EXAMPLES OF SUCCESSFUL EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS. >> THAT'S ONE WHICH IS THAT
I'M SORRY. >> LET'S GO TO NUMBER FOUR. WHAT ARE YOUR EXPERIENCES WITH
FAMILY AND BUSINESS COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT? >> HAVE A LOT OF EXPERIENCES.
LET ME TALK A SUPERINTENDENT LEVEL. I TELL YOU LISTEN I CAN'T BRAG BUT I CAN GO ON AND ON ABOUT THE GREAT THINGS HERE IN SOUTHWEST MICHIGAN.
ONE OF THE LOCAL PARTNERS THAT I REALLY ENJOY WORKING WITH IS THE WHIRLPOOL CORPORATION.
WHIRLPOOL IS THE HEADQUARTERS RIGHT HERE IN MICHIGAN AND ONE THING WE WERE ABLE TO COME TOGETHER WITH A PARTNERSHIP FOR A PROGRAM CALLED CARE COUNTS. HE COMMUNITY WE SERVE AS A DEMOGRAPHIC OF SUPPORT. EVERY ONE OF OUR SCHOOLS HAVE BRAND-NEW WASHERS AND BRAND-NEW DRYERS AND MANY TYPES OF PACKAGES. I SHARE THE VISION OF BRINGING THE SPORTS TO THE FENCE AND HER BRAIN AREA SCHOOLS AND LITERALLY JUST LAST WEEK AND SHUT OUT TO MISTER JEFF KNOW WHO WILL BE RETIRING FROM WHIRLPOOL GIVE ME $25,000 TO PUT THAT DIRECTLY WITH KIDS TO NOT ONLY KEEP THEM ENGAGED BUT CREATE OTHER AVENUES FOR POSTSECONDARY SUCCESSES WHEN GOING OFF AT THE COLLEGE. PUTS OPPORTUNITIES IN PLACE SO
THAT YOUNG PEOPLE HAVE SOME POSTSECONDARY SUCCESSES. >> NEXT QUESTION NUMBER FIVE.
EXPLAIN HOW YOU COMMUNICATE WITH DISTRICT STAFF AT EACH LEVEL.
>> COMMUNICATING WITH DISTRICT STAFF AT EACH LEVEL. THE ME TO YOU ONE THING THAT WAS FUN. GOING THROUGH PANDEMIC. A LOT OF OF THOSE IN-PERSON MEETINGS WERE CANCELED ACROSS THE COUNTRY. WE REALTOOK ADVANTAGE OF GOOGLE CLASSROOM AND NOW WE ZOOM USING THEM. WE HAD STAFF MEETINGS THAT INGS THAT WAY. WE HAVE STAFF MEETINGS AND WHEN WE TALK EVERYTHING THAT'S GOING ON FOR THE DISTRICT. WE HAVE A TIGER CHAT THAT BREAKS DOWN EVERY DEPARTMENT FROM STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES TO HUMAN RESOURCES AND BUSINESS.
I PUT A MESSAGE OUT TO THE COMMUNITY VIA VIDEO I THINK GOT OVER 9000 VIEWS.
[01:00:05]
SHE WOULD EMAIL, PHONE CALL SOCIAL MEDIA WHATEVER IT TAKES TO GET THE MESSAGE TO YOU.>> QUESTION NUMBER SEVEN. WHAT HAVE YOU DONE POSITIVELY IMPACT STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT AND
GAP CLOSING IN YOUR PREVIOUS DISTRICT? >> CLOSING THE GAP IN STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT. YOU YOUNG PEOPLE ACHIEVING AT MANY ELITE LEVELS THE GOAL IS WHEN YOU WANT TO CLOSE THE GAP YOU DON'T WANT TO NEGLECT ANY STUDENT. WE PUT A MULTITIERED SYSTEM OF SUPPORT IN PLACE.
WE RESPOND TO THOSE WHICH IS SOMETHING CALLED RTI WHICH IS RESPONSE INTERVENTION AND USING THE INVENTORY TO SEE HOW WELL WE IMPLEMENT A TIERED ONE SUPPORT IN OUR DISTRICT.
HOW ARE WE IMPLEMENTING TWO SUPPORTS IN OUR DISTRICT AND SUPPORTS IN THE DISTRICT HAVING A FOCUS ON A MULTITIERED SYSTEM AND FOCUS ON CLIMATE CULTURE AND SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING. HERE IN THE STATE OF MICHIGAN IN 2017 WERE SORT OF PRACTICE WAS WRITTEN INTO LAW AND IT SAYS PRIOR TO SUSPENDING THE STUDENT YOU MUST CONSIDER RESTORATIVE PRACTICES TO IMPLEMENT THAT DISTRICTWIDE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT IN PLACE NOT ONLY DO WE SEE A MASSIVE REDUCTION ABOUT HER SCHOOLS PENSION AND 25% WE ALSO SAW AN INCREASE IN ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT HONOR AND STEP SCORES WHICH IS OUR STATE
STANDARDIZED TEST. >> NEXT QUESTION. PLEASE SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCES
WITH STAFF RETENTION AND RECRUITMENT. >> STAFF RETENTION AND RECRUITMENT. I'LL TELL YOU ONE THING. TODAY IS ONE OF THE TOUGHEST TIMES TO REALLY RETAIN STAFF AS WELL AS RECRUIT. THERE'S A CRITICAL SHORTAGE OF WORK. WHEN YOU WANT TO SHOUT OUT MICHIGAN FOR HIS LEGISLATION WAS PASSED WE CAN PROVIDE ANYONE IN THE SCHOOL BUILDING WHATEVER RULE YOU SERVE YOUR SUBSTITUTING IN THE CLASSROOM AND NOW I DON'T WANT TO GET TO THAT POINT IN CALVERT COUNTY BUT WHAT I DO KNOW IS THAT THEY PAY TEACHERS PRETTY WELL IF I'M NOT MISTAKEN IT'S THE THIRD IN THE STATE OF HIGH PAYING SALARIES FOR TEACHERS SO THE GOAL IS HOW DOES COVER COUNTY BE NUMBER ONE IN THE STATE? WE BEAT MONTGOMERY COUNTY THE HIGHEST IN THE STATE AND I'M SURE WE GET SOME YOUNG PEOPLE ONLY COMING OUT OF THESE COLLEGES BUT EDUCATING THEMSELVES AND GETTING THEIR MASTERS POTENTIALLY DOCTORAL GRANT DEGREES IN TEACHING THE COMMUNITY THAT THEY SERVE. I CAN DEFINITELY SEE THE PUBLIC SCHOOL HAVING THE HIGHEST PERFORMING RETENTION PROGRAMS IN PLACE BY INVESTING IN THE TEACHER.
ONE THING I SAY WITH REGARD TO PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, YET ABOUT THE INVESTMENT.
I WOULD RATHER TRAIN YOU SO WELL AND YOU BECOME ONE OF THE BEST TEACHERS THAT YOU CAN GO ANYWHERE AND YOU GO INTO NOT TRAIN YOU AND YOU STICK AROUND. IT'S REALLY PUTTING A ROBUST PROFESSIONAL ROMAN PROGRAM IN PLACE TO MAKE THE TEACHER WANT TO STICK AROUND OR WANT TO STAY. NOT ONLY DO YOU DEVELOP OF THEM AND GIVE THEM CERTIFICATION IN NEED BUT THEY ALSO PUT MONEY IN THEIR POCKET. ALSO IN THOSE DOCTORAL LEVELS HOW CAN WE STRATEGICALLY NOW RAISE THE LEVEL OF PAY FOR EVERY LAST TEACHER IN THE
[01:05:07]
PUBLIC SCHOOL? WHY IS THAT IMPORTANT? WE ALSO ARE IN A PANDEMIC.I'LL TELL YOU YESTERDAY'S PRICE FOR TEACHERS NOT TODAY'S PRICE. THE PRICE IS DEFINITELY ONE OUT. TEACHERS ARE EXTREMELY VALUABLE.
THEY FIND A WAY TO KEEP THEM AROUND FOR THE LONG TERM SO THAT WE CAN ULTIMATELY SUPPORT
ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT. >> OKAY THANK YOU. >> WHAT IS BEEN YOUR EXPERIENCE IN BUILDING A SOLID AND SUCCESSFUL DISTRICT ADMINISTRATOR TEAM?
>> YOU KNOW WHAT, BUILDING A SOLID SUCCESSFUL ADMINISTRATION TEAM NOT ONLY COMES WITH LOOKING FOR THE BEST CANDIDATE POSSIBLE BUT ALSO THE SCENE. YOU DON'T HIRE SMART PEOPLE AND TELL THEM WHAT TO DO. YOU HAVE PEOPLE THAT ARE EXPERTS IN THE FIELD LET THEM BE CREATIVE AND INNOVATIVE TO DO WHAT'S BEST FOR KIDS HOW DO YOU GIVE THEM THE SUPPORT OF THE BEST DECISIONS POSSIBLE FOR THOSE KIDS? IT'S THE TEACHERS THAT ARE WITH THOSE COULD SWING FOUR HOURS A DAY THERE WITH THEM EVERY DAY BUT HOW DO YOU SUPPORT THE MINISTRY TEAM TO ENSURE THAT WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE FOR KIDS CAN BE DONE.
IT ALLOWS THEM TO DO WHAT THEY NEED TO DO FOR KIDS AND AT THE END OF THE DAY IT'S ABOUT STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT AND IF YOU HAVE HIGHLY TRAINED HIGHLY QUALIFIED EDUCATORS THAT ARE EXPERTS IN THE FIELD YOU CAN PUT THEM ON THE FIELD AND TELL THEM TO PLAY.
YOU GET AN OPPORTUNITY TO LEAD AND SERVE WE LOVE YOUNG PEOPLE AND WE ARE IN BUSINESS FOR THE SAME PEOPLE AND REASON. YOU HAVE TO TRUST. ALWAYS HAD A TRUSTING RELATIONSHIP WITH THE PEOPLE THAT I WORK WITH. AT THE TEAM MINDED AND TEAM AT
THE SAME. >> NEXT QUESTION. HOW WILL YOU BUILD A CULTURE OF EQUITY AND INCLUSION THROUGHOUT THE RICT DIRECTLY IMPACTING STUDENTS, STAFF AND PARENTS?
>> I THINK YOU MUST BE INTENTIONAL WHEN YOU TALK ABOUT EQUITY AND INCLUSION.
WE TALK ABOUT DIVERSITY. SOME PEOPLE CALL IT DER. DIVERSITY EQUITY INCLUSION HAVE ALSO HEARD IT CALLED JEDI. THE GOAL IS TO BE INTENTIONAL ABOUT IT.
IF YOU SAY THAT YOU FOCUS ON EQUITY THAN YOU DO. WE HAVE A BREAK AND DOMINANT STRATEGIC PLAN. WE WANT TO ENSURE THAT EVERYONE HAS A SAFE PLACE.
HOW DO YOU CREATE THAT ATMOSPHERE AND IT COMES BY HAVING A PLAN TO SUPPORT NOT ONLY PUT A PLAN IN PLACE BUT IMPLEMENTING THE PLAN AND MONITORING THE PLAN.
YOU CAN JUST PUT THE PLAN TOGETHER AND SIT ON THE SHELF. YOU NEED TO BREAK IT DOWN AND OPENING IT UP. MONITOR AND ADJUST IT AND IMPLEMENT IT.
TO EVALUATE WHICH IMPLEMENT AND GO BACK AND SAY IT'S INSPECTING WHAT YOU EXPECT.
DIVERSITY, EQUITY IN CONCLUSION, THAT LANGUAGE IS ABUZZ AROUND THE COUNTRY.
AS THE FOCUS NATIONWIDE I DO THINK IT'S IMPORTANT THAT YOUNG PEOPLE WHATEVER COMMUNITY THERE PART OF WHATEVER THE STATUS SAYS THAT THEY HAVE A SENSE OF BELONGING IN THAT SCHOOL.
SOME PLACE TO GO OR THEY FEEL SAFE. I DON'T SO THAT THEY CAN TALK TO IN A PLACE WHERE THEY CAN GET A PHENOMENAL EDUCATION TO BE A PRODUCTIVE CITIZEN IN OUR
SOCIETY. >> THINK YOU. NEXT QUESTION.
WHAT DO YOU SEE AS OPPOSED PANDEMIC CRITICAL ISSUES IN EDUCATION OVER THE SPAN OF THE
NEXT FIVE YEARS? >> POST PANDEMIC CRITICAL ISSUES OVER THE NEXT FIVE YEARS IN OUR COUNTRY? IN CALVERT COUNTY IN MICHIGAN AND MARYLAND.
I REALLY THINK IT BOILS DOWN TO NOT ONLY THE WAY WE REDESIGNED WHAT SCHOOL IS.
[01:10:01]
WHEN I SAY REDESIGNING VERY QUICKLY A LOT OF SCHOOL DISTRICTS HAVE TO GET VIRTUAL ON THE NEED TO DO IT REALLY THE PRESEARCH IS THAT YOU HAVE TO SEE HOW YOU CAN DO IT BETTER.NOT NECESSARILY GIVING POLITICAL BY LOOKING AT THE INFRASTRUCTURE OF SCHOOL AND HOW YOU DELIVER EDUCATION. THEIR GREAT ENRICHMENT OPPORTUNITIES SOCIAL SKILLS BECAME A BIG ISSUE WITH YOUNG KIDS IN SOME CASES IT'S A FULL SCHOOL YEAR OR YEAR AND-A-HALF UNLIKELY THEY NEED TO GET THOSE RELATIONSHIP SKILLS BACK. IN ADDITION TO PHYSICAL ACTIVITY. A LOT OF YOUNG PEOPLE, GUILTY OF IT, SITTING ON MY PHONE OR MAKE VIDEOGAME AND THE KIDS AT THE OCULUS VIRTUAL HEADSET ON. HOW DO WE KEEP MOVING? I'M A FORMER VIRGINIA EDUCATION GENEALOGY. I KNOW THE NFL HAS TO PLAY 60 PROGRAMS LOOKING AT HOW WE ARE NOT PHYSICALITY OF YOUNG PEOPLE BUT ALSO THE RELATIONSHIP SKILLS AND THAT GOES INTO THE FIVE CORE COMPETENCIES OF SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING.
TEACHING THE YOUNG KIDS TO BE SELF-AWARE. BEING SOCIALLY AWARE OF WHAT'S GOING ON IN THE ENVIRONMENT AROUND YOU AND THINGS TO DO WHAT'S COMING DOWN THE TIMELINE
AND IN THE MAINSTREAM. >> THE LAST QUESTION. NUMBER 12.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR GREATEST PERSONAL SATISFACTION AS A PROFESSIONAL EDUCATOR?
>> THERE'S A COUPLE OF THINGS. EVERYTHING YOU DO SHOULD HAVE A RETURN ON INVESTMENT TO SPECIFICALLY IMPACT THE SUPPORT OF YOUNG PEOPLE WE SET THE BAR AND MEET THE BAR AND EXCEED THE BAR THAN RAZOR. FOCUS ON THE THREE A'S. ACADEMICS, ABSOLUTE ATHLETICS AND ARTS. THE BEST ATHLETES AND STUDENTS WITH THE EXPORT ACCRETIVE THE SELF AND HENCE THEM. WHERE ARE WE WITH AS A DISTRICT WITH THAT? THE INVISIBLE, LOCAL AND VIGILANT. NOT ONLY WILL YOU SEE ME AND HEAR ME BUT YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT WE ARE DOING AND GET ON BOARD AND SUPPORT.
I'M VERY BIG ON COLLABORATION. I WON'T DO IT TO YOU BUT I'LL DO IT WITH YOU.
WE HAVE TO DO IT TOGETHER. WATCHING KIDS ACHIEVE OVER TIME AND OUR EDUCATORS GET BETTER OVER TIME. I WANT THE COUNTY TO BE SUCCESSFUL AND MAKE YOU SO MUCH
FOR THE OPPORTUNITY. >> OKAY. THANK YOU DOCTOR TOWNSEND.
WE APPRECIATE YOUR BEING HERE IN WHAT YOU HAVE TO SAY. I WOULD JUST LIKE TO SAY TO THE PARTICIPANTS THAT YOUR DISTRICT WEBSITE HAS A SURVEY FOR EACH PARTICIPANT.
[01:15:01]
PLEASE GO TO YOUR DISTRICT WEBSITE AND LOOK AT THE SURVEY. PAGAIN DOCTOR TOWNSEND THANK YO SO MUCH. AS SOON AS THE DISTRICT DECIDES WITH GOING TO HAPPEN NEXT ANDASSOCIATE WILL BE IN TOUCH WITH YOU. >> YES THERE THAT SOUNDS GOOD.
AS HE ABOUT 200 PEOPLE ON HERE HOPE EVERYONE HAS A GREAT
